    Default Minera IUD???

Hey ladies- I've been thinking about getting a Minera IUD (the plastic one: ) and was wondering if anyone has one and could tell me about their experience. I have two friends who have and love them, but the internet is full of nasty reviews... I feel like the majority of these just searched for a forum to complain on, but the number of complaints I've found are hard to discount.

*disclaimer: patch, ring, pills galore--I've tried everything but the shot/implant and I'm not going there. I've just recently decided that the pill is making me fat/a pain in the ass and I'm looking for a new method, so any advice from an actual user would be fabulous!! Thanks!

Nothing worked for me, or my sister's either.

All 3 of us have the mirena and love it. It took three months for mine to settle though. It was nearly 3 months of bleeding, but it has stopped and hasn't come back. Thank goodness. No other side effects. My older sister has had it 5 years, and just got her replaced. My little sister had it 2 years, and just removed it so she can become pregnant. My current employer is an OB and she thinks they are wonderful, and has one herself.

I've had my Paragard for a number of years. Nice to be hormone free, I tell you.

For me it was horrible, but then everything once they took my Yaz away, was.
I believe it was the progesterone causing me problems, not the device itself. I am not hormone friendly.
I have friends who have the Mirena, and they absolutely love it.

I have had the Mirena for a little over a year now. It can take a few months for your body to get accustomed to it. I had super heavy bleeding for the first few weeks but it went away after that.

Also, make sure the threads are cut short but not too short!!! Because they are more like fishing line than strings...and if it's too short your significant other could get his junk poked and apparently it feels like barbedwire. When it's the proper length it will kind of coil around the cervix halfway.

I had a little bit of breakthrough bleeding the first 3 months, but after that my periods became super short and really light. They last about two days on average which is AWESOME.

The only adverse effect now is that I'm super prone to getting yeast infections now, which is a pain, but can be avoided by making sure any sex toys you use are uber clean (wash those suckers with purel!) and your bf's junk is squeaky clean too.

But I love it. I love not having to take a pill and not having to deal with adverse side effects like weight gain. (Former anorexic...I freak out if I gain one pound.) And it is truly awesome to know I won't have worry about birth control for FOUR MORE YEARS. It's the biggest pain in the ass to me, remembering to take a pill, and condoms suck.

My boyfriend loves it as well. He is the type who gets paranoid about knocking a girl up even if he's wearing a condom, so this really eases his mind and he can fully enjoy the sex.

You should definitely consider Mirena, it's great. =)

I had Mirena for 2.5 years before switching to Paraguard. I thought it would be the best option for me since I'm hormone sensitive but there was so very little hormone in the device.

I gained 15 lbs within 6 months after being put on Mirena that I COULD NOT lose, no matter how hard I tried. After I had it taken out, I lost 10 of those lbs within one month without working out.

Because I'm hormone-sensitive, after about 2 years, my breasts hurt constantly, which freaked me out because I am at risk for breath health issues (cysts, cancer, all of that shit).

My periods were lighter, but they were drawn out. My normally heavy, 5-day period became a moderate 10-day period. (On Paraguard, my flow is heavier than it originally was. I soak a super tampon in an hour at my peak point)

Cramps were lightened, but not eliminated (Meanwhile, I'm on Paraguard and I don't feel one single cramp)

Got really bad acne while on Mirena. Like the weight, my skin cleared up very fast after I had it taken out.

I didn't experience a drop in sex drive, but I did notice I stopped having PMS.

I love my Paraguard, though. Hormone free and just as effective.

I used to have really heavy periods and part of the reason why I got a Mirena is because I am somewhat iron deficient. I haven't bled as hard as I used to for days even once since I got it. I did, however, have some degree of moderate to heavy spotting almost every day for like 3 months and during that time I didn't smell like I usually do (down there). Usually I have a pretty nice scent, and I smelled kind of weird during that time. After the first three months, though, my periods are light and infrequent and my scent has returned to normal.

I, too, was kind of worried about the bad things I had read about them because I have mood problems to begin with (I get seasonal depression and I'm bipolar). I haven't noticed any change on my mental health, but my existing problems are hugely confounding factors. I'm pretty sure it has given me even less of a sex drive than I already had, but it's difficult to say because I've never been that into sex anyway. Getting horny actually feels kind of weird since I've gotten it. Like, my imagination wants to say that it feels like my cervix gets smaller and can feel the string. I don't know a whole lot about the biology of that part of my body, but I'm going to assume that I'm being crazy in thinking that's what it feels like. Regardless of what causes it, though, it definitely does feel weird in a way I don't particularly like.

I really like not having to worry about getting pregnant and having fewer periods, but I'm not sure I'm going to keep it for the full five years. The chance of it having an effect on my mood is a bit risky (I wasn't actually aware of people's horror stories until after I had already gotten it) and the whole less sex drive and weird feeling is something I'd like to get rid of. Unfortunately, I don't think getting a Paraguard would make sense for me because of the whole iron issue.

I've been on the mirena for almost 2 yrs now. I like it and don't have any problems. When I first started I had some bad cramping though for a few months but they eventually disappeared. My periods have been the same. When I was on depo my periods completely disappeared.

I got the Depo shot every 3 months for 2 years. It stopped my period completely... however... it made me uh... hairy and it did slightly change my anatomy... not to sound gross but it made my clitoris double in size. (too many hormones?)

I'm definitely interested in getting the mirena iud as soon as my period is over and I can see my obgyn. I've heard good things and it says on their commercial that it's the only proven birth control method that decreases menstrual bleeding.

I got the Mirena in August 2009 and so far I love it. My periods have gotten shorter and lighter and I have had no bad side effects. I chose to get it because my body does not react very well to hormones (such as with the pill) since I had Cushing's Syndrome for most of my childhood and my hormones were all out of whack. When I had Cushing's, I had high cortisol levels-- 50 is considered normal, 100 is considered high, and mine was 1100, so I was veeeeeery very sick for a long time and lost all my hair and gained 60 pounds in 3 months from the Cushing's. So whenever I take medications with hormones in it my body basically freaks out. There is a very small amount of hormones in the Mirena and my body doesn't seem to be affected by it.

The Mirena has been great for me--I never have to worry about forgetting my pill or it falling out. I have not have a child yet so my doctor gave me some pill to open up my cervix so that they could put it in easier. Honestly, when they put it in, it was the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life, but the pain was gone after 5 minutes. To me, I feel like 5 minutes of intense pain is worth not worrying about getting pregnant for 5 years plus shorter and lighter periods.

I have health insurance, and it was $10 for the doctor's fee and $10 for the actual Mirena. So if you have health insurance and do a $5 co-pay for prescriptions, the Mirena will also save you lots of money compared to birth control pills.

That's all I can think of for now. but PM me if you have any questions!

    Hope this helped

**Edit: also wanted to add that it is as effective as getting your tubes tied... which is pretty damn effective if you ask me!! so overall I am very happy with it and have nothing bad to say.

I've been on MIRENA for about 4 months... since then, I've gained a considerable amount of weight...which isnt like me... i have always been thin, workout, and eat very healthily.... Yes it does make my periods lighter...I had my tubes tied when my son was born, and get horrific periods which is why I got mirena in the first place... but i've also noticed that I get very dizzy since i got it put in, also my sex drive has went down to nothing, (which DEFINATELY isn't like me)... been moody as hell.... and have been more prone to bladder infections... I'm having it removed, only thing I'm gonna miss about it is that it made my boobs HUGE

I was just wondering how every one was doing with their Mirena...

I had mine put in about 9 months ago. I seemed to like it but once 9 months hit I guess it was long enough to where I could really see the side affects from the Mirena. I could not lose any weight and was always bloated on top of that, I was moody, I could always feel it poking my uterus and I was scared it would poke through, I had to quit rough sex, I had random but very light bleeding, and when my normal period times rolled around I would get weird side affects like one time my back would hurt then I would get flu-like symptoms the next couple of times.

So I began doing more research and found out I am not that crazy and this happens to a lot of people. So I removed it myself. I was just tired of all of it. Oh and I was dizzy a lot and would still get PMS cramps during the week my period was supposed to be there.

I'm glad it works out great for some people, but I know it does not for a lot of other people. Just wanted to see if anybody was similar. And if some of the people are still happy.

^ It's such a tiny amount of copper. They say it amounts to less than what you'd consumer in copper on a normal day.

Even if it were a lot of copper, I still think it's better than consuming synthetic hormones on a daily basis! Hormones are scary. Tiny amounts of them cause huge changes. And copper is just, well, copper.

I love my ParaGard. No breakthrough bleeding or any problems yet. A bit more crampy around period time, but I've only had it for a couple of months: my body is still adjusting to it.

I have incredible insurance and an amazing doctor. It cost me $20 total and another $20 for a followup visit.

It is painful to insert if you haven't had a child AND don't have a doctor numb your cervix. Luckily, my doctor numbed my cervix, so the insertion wasn't bad at all. And 100% worth it!

^^If you don't mind me asking, what insurance company do you use? I'm looking around, but can't seem to find one that I like. I think just to order the iud costs between 700-1000$ where I live, plus the costs of insertion. I'd rather not pay the whole thing if I don't have to.

My mom is a doctor, so I had insurance through a company called Humana. Really awesome insurance. Now I have it through Dean. Though it doesn't really matter what company you go through: what matters is the coverage of the plan you're on.

To the OP: My doctor herself had a ParaGard, and my nurse had a Mirena. They both loved theirs.

I should mention that the only major downside to going off of hormones (i.e. quitting BC pills, getting ParaGard inserted, etc.) is that you will probably bleed more. For sex workers, this could be a big problem. Especially during the awkard transition phase where your body is getting accustomed to having an IUD in it, you may have problems with your skin, your period will probably be less regular, and you will probably bleed more. For me, I started bleeding significantly more: I don't think I could have stripped or anything during this phase. I'd have to stay home for those 2-3 days of heavy bleeding every cycle.

For me, it's worth it because I'm not stripping anymore and because I don't want to be taking hormones.

Mirena users often find that their periods stop altogether or become very light...but it's hormonal birth control.

There is no perfect option, really: you just have to decide what is right for your situation.

I remember reading this thread and it is what made me want to get the Mirena.

Once I started having all those problem, especially what felt like the flu for 2 and a half weeks, I started looking up side affects. For quite a few people, it has caused a lot of problems, including the need of a hysterectomy for some.

If it works for you, great! I'm jealous. It was awesome barely bleeding. I don't even know if I could call it bleeding.

I would try the paraguard but I felt the Mirena poking my uterus the whole time so I think I'm going to try something else...
