Default $600 car, 258mpg, good safety. WAH I WANT ONE

    http://www.examiner.com/x-8310-Trend...r-gets-258-mpg

This $600 car is no toy and is ready to be released in China next year.
The single seater aero car totes VW (Volkswagen) branding.
Volkswagen did a lot of very highly protected testing of this car in Germany, but it was not announced until now where the car would make it's first appearance.
The car was introduced at the VW stockholders meeting as the most economical car in the world is presented.
The initial objective of the prototype was to prove that 1 liter of fuel could deliver 100 kilos of travel.

    Spartan interior doesn't sacrifice safety

The aero design proved essential to getting the desired result. The body is 3.47 meters long and just 1.25 meters wide, and a little over a meter high. The prototype was made completely of carbon fiber and is not painted to save weight.

The power plant is a one cylinder diesel positioned ahead of the rear axle and combined with an automatic shift controlled by a knob in the interior.

Safety was not compromised as the impact and roll-over protection is comparable to the GT racing cars.

    $600 car gets 258 mpg

The Most Economic Car in the World will be on sale next year:
Better than Electric Car – 258 miles/gallon: IPO 2010 in Shanghai

    • This is a single seated car
    • From conception to production: 3 years and the company is headquartered in Hamburg , Germany ..
    • Will be selling for 4000 yuan, equivalent to US$600..
    • Gas tank capacity = 1.7 gallons
    • Speed = 62 – 74.6 Miles/hour
    • Fuel efficiency = 258 miles/gallon
    • Travel distance with a full tank = 404 miles

I'm so impressed. I get scared about driving such a small vehicle, but this kind of technology is AWESOME.

Anybody know how to get a car in the US "gray market" where it's still registerable? I'll pay 3x the cost of the vehicle!

I love the technology, but I wouldn't be able to drive such a tiny car. I like to feel safe, and to me that equals a bigger car.

I like the idea, but I wouldn't drive it. It's too small and in the snow if I got hit by an SUV I know I'd be dead. Also, I'd prefer something that at least has two seats.

the fact that it is 600$ is awesome-- thats like only a nights work! i would keep my car and buy one of these for occasions where i didnt feel like i needed the bimmer.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

That is so cool! I would keep my regular car and get one of these too. It seems so economical.

not gonna happen ... even with an attempted motorcycle registration. Biggest reason is that the diesel engine can't meet US emissions requirements.

Umm.. don't think so. I drive 2 different diesels (per mile lower emissions, since MPG is so much higher)

Diesels are legal, and (ask trains, trucks, heavy equipment or VW TDI owners) alot more efficient

emissions are very low......even near zero, especially when running waste veggie oil)

Mercedes sells diesels in the US. Even if this particular diesel can't meet US emissions requirements, VW can always put in a gasoline engine that maybe gets 200 mpg instead.

^^^ I'll agree with that ! For some reason the US EPA has a real tough stance re diesel engine emissions. That tough stance has kept a number of very popular ( worldwide ) diesel engine cars out of the country ( with volkswagen having the most problems in this regard ). At any rate, yes a gasoline engine could be substituted .... which takes to the next obstacle ...

US insurance companies are going to declare this vehicle to be 'high risk' ... because to put it frankly ANY accident taking place with this vehicle is going to result in severe injury or death of the driver. Even if this vehicle were to sell for $6000 = $100 a month in the USA, having to cough up $2000 a year = $ 167 a month in insurance premiums would certainly alter the overall cost of ownership equation.

It's still safer than a motorcycle. I'm not sure if insurance for a motorcycle is more or less than an average car. On the other hand, this vehicle is much less likely to cause significant damage to another vehicle in an accident. Someone I know who owns an SUV told me the insurance is high because of the potential damage it could do to another vehicle in an accident.

^^^A hell of a lot cheaper than a motorcycle too, and you can drive it year round.

The insurance companies would argue otherwise ... unless you plan on wearing a helmet and leathers every time you drive it. Also, it's far less maneuverable than a motorcycle in terms of swerving / going off the road safely to avoid a collision.

    two words ... no fault

I dub it the "Rocket Coffin"!
THAT's where I've seen this design before. Mister Spock's body was launched into space in one of these things in the movie Star Trek II Wrath of Khan ...

Bottom line is that with the US interstate highway system / volume of tractor-trailers on the road, and the 'motorcycle with a plastic skin' design of this vehicle, it will never see a legal US registration. There is a long list of other very intriguing vehicles that have been offered for worldwide sale that never gained US approval. I'm still waiting for ...

    - ... a built in India diesel hybrid pickup truck that is supposed to sticker for $20 grand or less

    - ... the Smart Roadster that has been promised but never materialized

    1. VW has a growing line of diesels being sold in the US. I admit the EPA (and some state EPAs) are anti-diesel, for some unknown reason, but they are legal and growing in popularity.

    2. I don't understand the "safety" issue at all. If i can choose to drive a motorcycle, why can't I choose to drive this? Surely I'm safer in this than on two wheels with no cage and a gas tank in my crotch?!!?

There are people who ride motorcycles without wearing a helmet or leathers.
