    Default Knee Pain?

    Hello Everyone,

Recently I started jogging again, and I have noticed a dull pain in both of my kness. I am wondering if this was due to dancing in the past or improper form while doing squats and other exercises...Does anyone else experience this? If so, what has worked for you? I also realize that my leg muscles are weak, and they need some serious strength! I hope that once I build them up, I won't experice pain while jogging. Maybe it is my age? I am 28 now.

In the meantime, I am experimenting with other exercises to increase my heart rate.

    Thank you in advance!

^^^ I'd bet that in the past you dealt your knees some fairly severe abuse while dancing. I know I certainly did !!! But I found that by taking glucosamine + chondroitin my knees become much 'happier'.

Thank you Melonie! I will look into those supplements. Would I need to take them daily?

Try cod liver oil capsules too. I have a bad hip which only gives me pain if I stop taking the oil. xx

Thanks Victoria! Would I get the same results with flaxseed oil ? Did you notice the pain in your hip only during exercise?

You could try but I've used both and only the fish oil helped. My pain was initially only during exercise, but then started coming on during cold/wet weather and when I walked. It's totally gone now though.

I've had this before. Most likely is bruising to the cartilage between your knee-cap and leg bones. Glucosamine and Cod Liver Oil are excellent for this kind of strain. Giving your knees some deep heat is good too.

Glad to hear it's worn off now!

I used to be a competitive distance runner and work at a running store. This is a super common problem and can usually be resolved with one really good investment: quality running shoes.

Quality running shoes are going to cost around $100. Make sure you get them at a running store, the people at Big 5 don't know what they're talking about, employees at running stores can find the right shoe for your foot (they do a gait analysis, make sure you get one!). Don't buy shoes on discount, it means they are won out; shoes have self-lives and the cushioning wears out in time. Recommended brands are Mizuno, Brooks, Asics, and Saucony. Nikes suck, don't buy them!

Thanks pussyinboots, brusing sounds much less permanent. I like that idea... Deep heat sounds nice too. Maybe a hot bath?

Thank you K Sweet! 100 dollars is worth no knee pain in my book. What do you think of the Vibram Five Fingers? Interesting what you say about Nike... some runners swear by them! I have been running in some old shoes that were given to me, and they are certainly worn out! Hopefully I will buy new ones soon, before I injure myself even more!

Any distance runner or athlete will not wear Nikes. They makes good track spikes but that's about it.
Vibram makes excellent soles for their shoes, they're great for trail running. However, I would not wear those shoes on anything but a trail ever. No pavement, no gravel, only grass and dirt. There is no cushioning to it, which is very important in a running shoe. Barefoot running is the best for your ankles, but in this case we're focusing on building new muscles and getting rid of knee pain.
Like I said, go to a running store and get a gait analysis. Every person has a different gait, most people pronate (feet roll inwards), some are neutral (feet do not roll), and even less supinate (feet roll outwards). Too much supination or pronation tends to cause knee, shin, hip, or back problems. At a running store they can check and put you into shoes that will correct the imbalance according to how much you pronate, supinate, or do neither.
As an example, I'm nuetral on one foot, pronate slightly on the other but my knees tend to knock around so I wear shoes that lightly correct my gait.
