Default Toxic Makeup and Beauty Products

Hello all. I'm new here and thought I would post this information for anyone interested. As dancers, we consume an exorbitant amount of beauty products. It would be helpful to know what products contain toxic ingredients and how it affects overall health. I have done a little research, so here you go:

If you take a close look at the ingredients in the products in your bathroom and on your vanity, you will see a lot of long words and words that you can’t pronounce. Many of these words represent toxic chemicals that you are applying to your body.

Skin is an organ. It is porous, so whatever toxic substances you apply to your hair, skin, and nails will seep into your subcutaneous tissue and enter your bloodstream. If many of the products you use daily are toxic, and they are used over a period of several years, they are likely to have adverse health effects over time. To say “everything is bad for you” is a cop-out. To take control of your health you need to become aware of what you are exposing yourself to, and make adjustments accordingly.
Ingredients of concern that are in cosmetics and toiletries include:
Formaldehyde, nitrosamines, lead and other heavy metals, parabens, phthalates, hydroquinone, and 1,4- dioxane

You can inform yourself on the detrimental effects of these chemicals on the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Website.

    http://www.safecosmetics.org/index.php

I was particularly alarmed when I learned that many lipsticks contain lead, many nail polishes contain formaldehyde, and several popular fragrances contain phthalates, which cause endocrine disruption and birth defects.
There is a database, called Skin Deep, that allows you to enter the products you use in a search, and it will explain what toxic ingredients are in them, as well as rate them on a scale from 0-10 (10 being the most detrimental to your health). You can also search for alternative products that contain a smaller amount or no toxic chemicals at all.

If anyone is interested in alternative makeup and bath products, I have been trying out several. Some work, some don't. As you know it can be a chore to find a product that suits your needs.
Here are some that have proven to work for me that contain none of the above stated toxic ingredients:

Jane Iredale makeup: The mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner, and blush works fine for me. The line is geared towards those with allergies, so the ingredients are, for the most part, non-toxic. I get mine discounted from Ebay, as the retail prices for this makeup are ridiculous.

Grandpa's Oatmeal Soap: non-toxic and great for the skin. Use as a facial or body soap

Dr. Brommer's Castile Soap: bottle lasts long and is a good substitute for sodium laureth sulfate

Burt's Bees Shampoo and Conditioner: less chemical additives

    Safe Nail Polish: http://www.safenailpolish.com/

Burt's Bees Lip Gloss: No lead here!

Thank you so much for this. I've been wanting to post a thread for awhile asking about all-natural and non-toxic products... so this is great!

You're welcome NikkaR. If you happen upon a natural product that works well, please post it here.

It is interesting to note that many chemicals that are regulated or banned for use in cosmetics in the European Union are allowed here in the U.S. It seems corporations are given free reign here and we can't count on the FDA to protect us.

^^^ You're right. This applies to a lot of other environmental toxins, not just in cosmetics. The EU goes by more of a precautionary principle, where it's the responsibility of the chemical manufacturer to prove that the chemicals are safe. In the US substances are essentially assumed safe until there's egregious evidence that they're not... and even then it takes such a long time for chemicals to be banned. It's very upsetting.

I'm British and I noticed a lot of things that are banned over here are legal in the states. I particularly noticed it in food ingredients. It's really hard to get good make up without chemicals, but reducing them really helps!

NikkaR: Yes. I have been down the rabbit hole and the amount of corruption in the federal government is astounding. Not to mention the revolving door between these big corporations and government offices. Money talks more in the U.S. government than in the strip club!

Sorry for the delayed reply. Long night at the office.

I'm not from the other forums. Guess Ipanema's population is booming hehe.

^^ I guess so... just wondering.

Ladies, I also wanted to let you know about an all-natural deodorant I use called Crystal Body Deodorant Stick. It's cheap and works better than any deodorant I have ever used. You can find it here:

    http://store.thecrystal.com/shared/S...t=products.asp

Its only ingredients are ammonium alum and natural mineral salts. It does not contain the chemical aluminum chlorohydrate which is a proven neurotoxin, and has been linked to the development of Alzheimer's and cancer. This is VERY nasty shit which is found in most commercial deodorants and antiperspirants. Of course, there are many who don't think there's anything wrong with this compound. But my reasoning is, why take a chance when we're exposed to so many other environmental toxins?

There are many harmful chemical ingredients in mainstream varieties of perfumes and body sprays. Take, for instance, Britney Spears' Fantasy, which has a hazard score of 10 on the Skin Deep website. It contains carcinogens, and is linked to endocrine and organ system toxicity.

You may want to consider substituting essential oils for conventional perfumes to minimize toxin exposure. Don't confuse fragrance oils with essential oils. The former is made of synthetic chemicals. Essential oils are the real thing. The perk is you can create a personalized scent for yourself.

There is lots of info on the web regarding essential oils and where to get them. Here is a site that offers instructions on how to mix the oils. A little goes a long way.

No kidding. Great posts, it's nice to see some informed posting

I also use natural deodorant - no antiperspirant! The body should sweat

Wow. I was just going to do a post on this too. I am learning so much about health because of a problem with my kidney. It makes me angry that even really expensive makeup is so toxic. I thought we had laws to protect consumers. I am so mad.

A great product for clearing the skin is Bragg's Raw Organic Apple Cider.
Here is a link to the Bragg website which has great books with so much information about all of the toxic stuff in the average Americans life.

    http://www.bragg.com/

Don't be fooled by how simple all the stuff seems. Reading those books will change your life for the better. I have the book on apple cider vinegar it's full of valueable information. I just went out and bought a Spite Shower Filter after reading about all of the chemicals in our water and how bad it is for your hair and skin. I bought mine at Lowes. My skin feels so soft now.

Yup, I reaaaally recommend this site. You can search a certain brand/product and check the level of toxicity. I always go on this site before I purchase any cosmetic products.
