    Default No more Tampons! Finally!!

So I don't know about everyone else, but I get sick and tired of tampons and cutting strings... etc etc... anyway... my best friend had me try this thing called a Diva Cup... she bought me one from like a whole foods or something, but anyway, it's amazing! Can go up to 12 hours without changing it and holds way more and is waaayy more sanitary than I tampon. Just wanted to throw that out here, because it's the first thing I've really felt like is cool enough to actually tell people about and not sound like an idiot on here...

Pretty much it's a silicon cup that you empty whenever you feel you seen to... you don't have to each time you go to the bathroom because it won't smell like tampons with urine on them... and you can put it far enough up to where it doesn't show at all. It can leak a little... but I think less than tampons, they also have two sizes but I think the bigger size is for after childbirth, which I have not been fortunate enough yet to have a child, so I just use the small one. Look it up... it's like $25 but by far worth it... as long as you can get over the whole dumping blood thing... plus... if you are the "save the earth" type... it's like recycling

P.S. Don't try the ones they sell at a drugstore... they look like a livestrong bracelet attached to plastic wrap... I made that mistake and let's just say it was not pretty!

I've heard about these. Sounds pretty cool but is 12 hours really safe? I guess if it's silicone then it would be.

I have really heavy periods, so I'd like to try it out one day... maybe not at work until I figure the thing out lol.

I swear by Diva Cups. They are amazing and totally safe. My cramps became less severe with the cup as well. Tampons have so many chemicals and bleach in them that make cramping so much worse. Diva Cup totally kicks ass Plus they still allow you to have the natural lubrication your vagina is supposed to have so your a lot cleaner(if that makes sense lol).

Do a search for them on here... they have been discussed lots over the years.

Is there still a risk for that Toxic Shock Syndrome with Diva cups like tampons?

    This is the FAQ page

    http://www.divacup.com/en/home/faqs/

    Q. What about Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)?
    A.

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is considered a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by toxin-producing strains of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium. TSS has been linked to high absorbency and prolonged use of tampons. There are now regulations in labeling for tampon absorbency to decrease the risk of TSS.

Symptoms of TSS often mimic the flu and can include sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, or a rash that looks like a sunburn during your period or a few days after.

If you have had TSS, do not use a menstrual cup. As with any gynecological concern, please consult your physician.
    Q. Why does your User Guide say that if I've had Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) I shouldn't use The DivaCup?
    A.

An increased risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is not associated with the use of menstrual cups. We mention TSS in our literature so that women will be aware of this serious condition.

We suggest that you consult with your physician concerning TSS and the use of a menstrual cup.

You have to get used to the Instead cup to get it situated right. It's not bad at all! Plus, the advantage to it over the diva cup is that you can have sex with the instead cup in and you don't have to clean the thing... just trash it and put in a new one.

Ok, let me get this straight...

The Diva cup is reusable, and the Instead cup is disposable, that's the only difference?

    The Keeper Cup

    The Moon Cup

Are there any other brand of "cups" out there?

Sounds great and all, but I couldn't do this. I don't mind blood in the least, but dumping out a cup full of period blood and mucus, washing the cup, and putting it back into my vagina? Can't handle it. I like the sanitary, fresh feeling I get when I use a new tampon whenever I potty. I only have about 4 periods a year - so in terms of environmental impact this is something I won't compromise on; I take public transit and recycle as much as possible, so I'll keep my using Tampax, thanks. It's a compromise with mother earth.

I'm glad to see areas of feminine health evolving - I really am - but these cups and sponges make me shudder. I bet in 50 years though it'll be super common. Growing up my mother used actual rags for her monthly.

Okay okay, /rant. Sorry about that! lol!

You realize tampons are full of bleach and chemicals your body is absorbing? You dump the cup, rinse it out but every night and morning I sterilize it so its clean.

Id rather that them having my body absorbing bleach and other nasty shit. As long as your smart and safe with the cup its perfectly safe.

J.D I have no idea about the moon cup and stuff, I think its pretty much the same as the diva. I've only ever used the diva cup though.

Tampons have bleach in them? No way..... *goes on a Google spree*

You know, that doesn't scare me as much as it should....Back when I would camp I would bleach my stream water, let it rest for 90 minutes, then drink away. Bleach 'deactivates' in some instances.

Don't mean to thread-jack, but I feel the need to post this in case any other girl reads this and feels as freaked as I did, but isn't ready to try the cups yet.

Okay, I've only Wikipedia'd it, but so far "Some of the substances used to bleach tampons have been implicated in the formation of dioxin. A study by the FDA done in 1995 says there are not sufficient amounts of dioxin to pose a health risk; the amount detected ranged from undetectable to 1 part in 3 trillion, which is far less than the normal exposure to dioxin in everyday life". Also, there are non-chemical tampons available.

Interesting. I was getting killer crippling cramps on my period and they stopped when I switched the the cup. My OBGYN said it was probably because of the bleach in the tampons.

Everyone reacts differently I guess! lol

ETA... I just realized I read 'camp' as cramp lol.

Well I understand cleaning and reusing something takes a few more minutes than just throwing it out, but to many people, being reusable is an advantage.

There are many many different kinds of cups out there. I use the instead and I wash it with hot water and soap instead of throwing each one out. It isn't a porous material so it's easy to clean and bacteria can't make home there. So One a month...I can do that. I haven't had the need for tampons in about a year. These are just easier. Also there are brands out there on the net that you buy just the one, and because of it's material...you never need another one. It just gets washed and sanitized properly every time you use it and stored away where it won't get messed with or any dirt on it. I'm looking to get one of those.

If I feel safer about using it and cleaner, and on top of that it saves me some money...I'm there.

What about if you have a really small vagina? (small as in, regular tampons hurt sometimes, and a gyno (though she was pretty incompetent) actually did ask me if i was a virgin..i'm no whore, but no virgin either) Do the cups hurt? Or how do you take them in/out without hurting?

ok in regards to all of these cup thingies, where do you ladies get them? can i only get them by ordering them off the internet? living in sketchy neighborhoods has given me a lifelong hatred of ordering packages, so i always prefer to drive and pick up myself if possible.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

So I was looking into getting a Diva Cup las night and I found a website that pointed out size issues people can have with various brands.

    http://community.livejournal.com/men...s/1285963.html

The consensus, between this forum and reviews online, seems to be that the Diva Cup is the way to go. That being said, it's one of the longer ones out there. This might be an issue for me because I'm one of those people who tends to have her cervix painfully bumped during sex, because I guess I have a short vaginal canal (I'm such a prude and talking about this makes me so unconfortable, it's so ridiculous). Does anyone with one of these cups have the short canal problem? Is there anyone who has felt that the Diva Cup is too long?

I know that sunshine16 above asked about having a small vagina, so this is related, but my issue isn't really that it's small, but that it's short.

Not all tampons have bleach in them, before I had my hysterectomy, I would use these tampons and they are safer IMO.
