Default Confused about webcam setup stuff!

Next week I'll be able to start camming, but am confused about how you set this up.

Do you just plug it in and then that's it? How do you configure it? My cam has come with no CD or anything...

Also, it seems there are different options for actually running the cam...like websites you download programs from to run it? Which ones are good? Do certain webcam sites make you use certain specific programs to run your cam?

You mean installing your webcam, it depends on camera, it usually comes with a CD if not you would have to go to the manufactor website to get the drivers for it.

Darn it. My cam has no CD and no instruction manual. It's just a cam with USB plug and 2 little other plugs for the headset mic. I'm not even sure how the mic plugs work, as the cables are pretty short and won't reach the PC from where the cam will be, and also won't reach my head from where the cam or PC is. *pulling hair out*

^.......... If your cam dosen't come with a CD go on the site like minnie suggested and use the numbers on the tag (Yes there should be a tag on your cam's cord) and figure out what driver you need to download in order for your cam to work since you don't have a cd. Your cam is connected to your pc via a USB plug. All you have to do is plug your cam (using the USB plug) into the USB drive (usually on the side of your computer...they look like little squares.)

For example if you have a logitech cam and have no cd.. there will be a tag on the cord with little serial numbers on it. All you'd have to do is go on Logitech.com to download the drivers using those serial numbers. Trust me you can do it.

If the cam is too short for you you can buy a usb extention cord. it's not a big problem as your trying to make it out to be.

your cam has drivers the computer usually can find it on its own or on the box or the cam will have it's serial number you can search for the drivers online.

if your cam is not a popular brand name cam you might have a harder time looking for its drivers logitech, microsoft. creative are usually the popular cams out there.

*sheepish* I do tend to freak out a bit sometimes. lol

It's Logitech, so the driver thing should be fine. I'm not concerned about the length of the cam to PC USB cable, that's pretty long. I'm concerned about the length of the other non-USB cables that link the mic headset to the PC. They are really short. Not sure how that's gonna work.

    Thank you!

Later on you can get the usb mic from logitech. You can always buy a usb extention cord if its too short and connects via usb ports. or you can get the external usb mic from logitech.

Oh! I've seen this link to the mic before...it looks nice...so this plugs into...what? The webcam? The back of your PC? And it's USB?

So if it plugs into the PC, it works with the cam somehow? I'd be concerned that the audio and video wouldn't sync somehow. I do have a microphone already, but I'm not sure if I can use that with the cam...how can you find this stuff out? It's a Shure SM58 mic for home recording (music, singing, etc), and it just runs through this audio interface I've got with studio recording software...but that'd mean to use it I'd have to HOLD the mic (or have a huge stand in my face, lol) and then also run the software all the time whilst on the cam. Hmm.

With that mic you put the link for, does it just sit on the desk...and you don't have to sort of lean right near to it to be heard, I'm assuming? That'd look kinda silly. lol.

Again your making it way too complicated.

You plug in your cam, you log on to the webcam site your working with. you select your cam, you select your mic and click broadcast now or go live. whatever the webcam site says for you to start making money.

No this mic was reccommended by people who do board room meetings. that is why I love logitech , logitech is advancing because of porn not because of the corperate world.

    YAY to that! lol

I'm in the process of setting up my webcam. Well, so far I've plugged it in and now it's doing updates, but I don't have the installation CD and also the little tag on the cord has been cut off. *SIGH* (Refurbished cam). I don't know how to download the driver if there's no number on the tag.

I also don't know how to turn the cam on...there seems to be a button on the top/back of it, but when I press it, nothing happens. FRUSTRATION!!!!!

If you can't find a model number of the cam on the cam, you have to find something in the box. there should be a serial number some where on the cam.

Are you able to take a picture of the cam and post it so we can see what type of cam it is. did you go to the logitech website it shows all the cams they have made on their website.

    http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/405/&cl=ca,en and http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/40...ca,en&legacy=1

If your cam is not on this website then you don't have a logitech webcam.

It's ok. I managed to find it by doing a Logitech automatic search through their site. Apparently my cam is a Quickcam E1000. So it's all good. All installed and set up.

I'm still getting used to it...it's not as smooth as I'd like, although right now I'm on wi fi broadband so maybe that's got something to do with it.

The photo quality is VERRRY grainy. I at first had the window open, the overhead light on AND a lamp on, and it was SO bright you couldn't see me properly. Just this white brightness. So I closed the curtains partially, and it was a lot better, but still grainy...and whenever I move, it's this weird delay of a couple of seconds. I thought it'd be like looking in a mirror, heheh.

Also, even when it's not too light inside, when I get closer to the cam, I get this bright light in the way. Is this some sort of flash?

I also can't get the mic to work. It's plugged in and JUST reaches my face, but there's no sound or anything at all. Hmm.

Oh, aaand how do you get the cam window to be bigger...is that possible? It's really small. Like, I hoped it'd be much larger. It's a bit hard to see...

(you're so helpful with this, by the way! I really appreciate it. I know I'm quite tiresome with all my over-thought questions, lol)

I'm only so far using it with its own Logitech "vid" something software. Will the different camming sites' windows be bigger? God, I hope so! I can figure out something with the lighting, I can fix the positioning, but I want a bigger window!!!

Edit - I checked out the lighting thing. That Cowboy Frank is really good. I like him. I didn't realise lamps and dimmer lights were the way to go. I thought you needed really bright light or the cam would go grainy. I love lamps and soft lighting. WAY more flattering!

    Thanks again!

    Try your cam at www.testmycam.com

As for lighting you have to remember this is for you to make money, not just go on cam to chat . this is a business treat it like one.

Yeah, I know it's a biz. Nobody would pay money for someone they can't automatically see clearly and who is nicely lit.

I worked out how to enlarge my window. MUCH happier now. lol
