A gal I know told me the craziest story I have ever heard! She got pulled over by a cop on a BICYCLE and got a ticket for going 2 miles over the speed limit! WTF?! Of course she's going to court to fight this and it will probably get thrown out but that's not the point. She's gonna have to waste a day off in court for a bullshit ticket!

Also, they're giving tickets for jaywalking. Yes, I know it's illegal but I've honestly never heard of anyone getting a ticket for this ... someone else told me it happened to their friend recently.

I read in a thread here on SW that because Vegas is so broke that the city is doing what ever it can to generate money. I honestly didn't believe this shit was happening until hearing it out of mouths of people I know. We need to watch our backs Vegas

This is not just happening in Vegas. Cities, Counties, and States, are all having a hard time dealing with the bad economy. Many are facing severe budget cuts and layoffs. So.. they are increasingly turning to alternate sources of income, one of which is fines and fees from traffic stops. The "cushion" on speeding has disappeared in some places.

While probably all would deny pressuring the police to write more tickets in bad economic times there does seem to be at least a correlation. Just read an article about this the other day, maybe I can go back and find it.

One of my guesses at causation would be the police departments not being directly pressured by the politicians but the officers feeling an indirect pressure resulting from their knowledge of possible looming cuts. The officers as city, county, or state employees then feel a need to justify their employment. Tickets and other citations show the officer is hard at work on the job and coincidentally brings in additional revenue.

Jaywalking in Las Vegas can be dangerous, especially if it's being done near the strip. I'm sure that is one of the reasons Metro is so intent on ticketing violators. I've seen at least two people being carted off in an ambulance after attempting to jaywalk across the Strip. The worst was at the corner of Tropicana and LV Boulevard. I don't know if that guy made it, but he left a lot of his blood all over the road.

No, what I'm referencing is not on the strip ... trying to jaywalk there is asking to be road kill.

Agreed... jaywalking is dangerous ... and lord knows I've had jaywalkers cross my path while I'm driving and all I could think of is .. are they playing chicken w/ a moving vehicle?

The are certain places off the strip that are popular jaywalking paths because the crosswalk at the traffic light is a distance away. It would be great in areas like this if there would be a crosswalk between traffic lights ... granted a pedestrian will HAVE to be careful crossing because it's not at a traffic light but at least it's a legal crossing area ... personally I would love this.

I'm wondering if there's a way to petition to have crosswalks in certain areas? Any ideas how I go about this? Do I go straight to the major w/ a proposal? I'm been debating about emailing Action13News ... I know they've helped locals w/ certain situations.

I agree with you that Vegas needs more crosswalks. Many parts of the city are simply not walker friendly but on the other hand, I'm glad that they're cracking down on jaywalking. I've seen way too many mangled bicycles being pulled off the street and bloody spots on the road. In the past two years THREE of the people my husband works with have been hit by cars while jaywalking near my home and I don't live anywhere near the strip.
