Default Dying My Hair at Home

So I've recently had a slew of bad experiences with hair dressers and I am just over them. I was wondering if anyone had any good experiences with dying their own hair? Are there any good at home dyes that will only damage my hair as much as the salon dye does? I also fear orange hair.

My hair is already pretty damaged, I don't know how much of a difference that makes. My natural hair color to the best of my knowledge is dirty blond/light brown and I want to dye it the color of Lauren Conrad’s hair (see pic). The dye that I have in it right now could best be described as drab ashy blond. I probably have about 3 inches of roots.

Anyway thanks for the advice or opinions!

Considering how many hairdressers out there are incapable of cutting a straight line, I don't see how it's such a bad idea. I think you're better off doing it at home than going to a cheap salon, hands down.

That being said, I know nothing about blonde hair. Sorry. I've dyed my hair at home for years but I'm red and I can't really give advice to blondes.

i do it. however, i go darker than my natural hair color and a 1 color process, which is easier. it appears you will be going lighter, correct? and it also looks like you want some color variations, which isnt as easy to pull off. you also need to figure out whether your coloring is cool, warm or neutral, as this will affect how you wear a hair color. you might not look good with that lady's color, kwim? you can use a color chart online to help. ion also has a pamphlet with their dyes to help you get a good color.

when i did bleach, i did it at home, but it was for putting in crazy colors like green. no experience with a more natural look.

i use ion from sally beauty and like them. my stylist likes wella. just make sure to read the instructions well. and get color stain remover! you will need it. put vaseline around the hairline to keep dye from bleeding onto the skin. i dont recommend doing it by yourself, since it's hard to touch up roots on a full head of hair. it's only easy to diy when you have a haircut like a mohawk. also, do a test patch first with a new dye. i have a sensitive scalp and did this before doing my whole head.

how often are you washing your hair? are you using color safe shampoo? if so which one? are you heat styling or using a blowdryer?

it's hard to tell from an internet forum how your hair will exactly look.

Yes I am trying to go lighter. I’m pretty sure my natural color is warm. My skin color has a pink tint and when I look at pre-dying my hair pics of myself my hair looked golden. I know its pretty hard to tell how my hair will turn out. I am more just trying to find out if anyone has a brand of dye they love, tips in general and what I need to know when doing at home lightening. Lauren Conrad’s hair has highlights, but I’m not looking for her exact hair, just something in the neighborhood. I wash my hair once or twice a week and I use Redken Extreme shampoo. It is for damaged hair and it strengthens it and I think it is color safe. Is a shampoo only color safe if it specifically says color safe? I’m also am blow-drying and strait ironing 1-2x a week. I use Chi Strait Guard.

I looked into Ion but I was concerned with the reviews that it is very drying. Where do they sell Wella? I also thought this one looked good:

    http://www.sephora.com/browse/produc...dPaginate=true

I love the color and the fact that it is not from a drug store but the reviews of orange brassiness make me think twice.

Mr. Hyde, I spend upwards of $200 on stylist after stylist and they all think that they know better than me about what I want my hair to look like. They all cut off way more hair than I tell them to and cut crazy layers because they tell me my hair is damaged. Now I just have damaged hair that is short with mullet style layers. I don’t trust anyone to touch my hair anymore and I feel like paying that kind of money for color I am not in love with is a worse idea than at home color.

I dye my own hair at home. My natural color is Reddish-brown and right now I'm a golden blond. I don't waste my time or money at salons anymore - I've never met a stylist who does what I like!

Are you from the US? If you're close to a Sally's Beauty supply I could recommend you the same things I use. Of course, there's no guarantee that your hair will come out nice, but honestly after doing my own hair for years I've realized it's pretty hard to fuck up.

Laurens hair actually looks light brown with lots of blond highlights, which is good from a damage standpoint, as you won't have to process your whole head.

Do you have a friend who could help you?

    WHoooooaaaaaaa.... slow down.

If you're darkening your hair, or lightening it within about one shade of your natural color, it's fine to do it at home. But if you're going more than a couple tones lighter, I'd hire someone. If you're not happy with the final results, tell them you're not paying until they do what you want. Bring pictures. Bring MANY.

I TOTALLY destroyed my hair about 10 years ago by trying to go lighter at home ( and I'm a natural blonde!) to the point they literally shaved my head. Not fun.

I dye my hair at home now, but I've gone back to red, and my hair is healthy and no one believes it's fake. I use the Perfect 10 from (Clairol?).

I used the fekkai and it made my hair like straw and frizzy. It's the same product that everyone else has, just in a prettier box at a higher price point.

Honestly, I've tried all the expensive brands and salons, and get the BEST results from Revlon Color stay..and its like $3!! I've had hairstylists on sets ask me where I get my hair done because the color is gorgeous and its so soft and healthy.

I'm naturally a dark blonde....this is me with my $3 hair color.

I've been dyeing my own hair at home for ages, and MOSTLY it's looked good.

The only issues I'd watch out for are that you use enough dye for your hair length. I generally skimp on dye, being the cheapskate I am, but my hair is longer than shoulder length so I technically SHOULD be using 2 packs. Meh. I never do and it still turns out alright, but I'd recommend anyone else to use the right number of packs.

Also, with lightening your hair, be careful to watch for the colour change. Your hair MIGHT go orange but it SHOULD move beyond this and turn out blonde. Try not to freak out if you see it's brassy-toned and rinse it out early, cause then it'll stay that colour.

Also with brassy tones, get a good toner shampoo/conditioner to use when you wash your hair. I use a cheap Schwartzkopt brand one instead of conditioner lately, and even though my hair's medium brown, it keeps the redness away. I highly recommend it. It costs like, $7 or something.

Also, and this is just my own particular preference, when lightening your hair, I'd go easy on the roots. I find that people in the blonde shade variety tend to look better/more natural if their roots are SLIGHTLY darker...and I don't mean majorly obvious black roots to platinum blonde hair, but you know...blondes with NO roots look a bit washed out to me sometimes...

    It's like, THIS I like...

    And THESE I don't...

I don't go light at home...it's always resulted in brassy, bad bleach jobs lol.
you just need to find the right stylist. I went from being a natural brunette to a platinum blond getting my hair highlighted twice with the girl I go see. It took me a while to find someone that did what I wanted though...I only found her because she did 2 of my friends hair and it looked great so I got her number.

I color my hair at home with Perfect 10 haircolor every 4-6 weeks. It does not dry out my hair, and I go a couple of shades lighter than my natural color.

It CAN be done well--I think you should go for it.

I only ever dye my hair myself. Whenever I've paid to do it, they've given me horrible/brassy color.

If your hair is light brown, to do LAuren Conrad's color, you just need heavy highlights. The Loreal highlighting kits are terrific, very easy to use and nice color.

I used Revlon Colorsilk 04 Natural blonde for years. Currently my hair is back to a reddish brown. ( I need to dye it). My friend in Tx uses the same product. It has no ammonia so it doesn't smell bad. I never had a problem with it drying out my hair. It got even lighter out in the summer sun or tanning booth. And It's cheap! Not more than $3.
