    Default Background checks for jobs

In 2000, I got an Entertainer's license in Houston. Back then, in order to get a license in Houston, you had to go to the Vice Police Department downtown, get fingerprinted, and pay $ 40. The photos were taken there, and I remember correctly, you received it right away.

Since then, I have had jobs (foodservice, retail, hospital, etc.) that required criminal background checks. My question is, does the Entertainer's license show up on the report (for jobs I apply for in Houston)? Were the companies that hired me just overlooking/ignoring it?

If I wanted to get a teaching job, would I even be able to? How thorough are criminal background checks?

    Thank you in advance!

Your best bet is probably to call the police station and ask them. Specifically ask if it's considered public records, and if so if it's only available in person or online. Most places will only run an online background check.

Britney Ireland used to teach, so she may have more info on this.

I know in most states of the U.S. criminal back ground checks for teaching are extremely thorough and won't hire you if you have been convicted of a felony. It also depends on the length of time, the type of crime, and if you're a repeat offender. Depending on what level of education you want to teach. (i.e K-8 for example)

If you're considering teaching, I would first find out at the school you're interested in teaching at or contact the Board of Education in that county/town what you need to do to complete their background check....the Board of Ed. might be lenient if the crime occured over 10 years and again it depends on the type of crime in addition they'll probably ask if you have all of your teaching certifications and education completed as well.

It's a good question about the entertainer's license showing up, if at all, and I'm not sure how that works and doubt it if it shows up on a background check, but if someone or potential employer wanted to find out there's always ways in doing so...

No, you're fine, unless you go work for the FBI or something. I had the same license in Houston and have been through multiple background checks for the very highly regulated and investigated financial industry. Its never come up far as I know, and I've never been denied a job due to background check information.

The license stuff is stored on a database that doesn't link to the national criminal registry, because, getting the license did not mean you are a criminal.

Trust me on this one ladies.

    Thank you ladies!

Kylea, good idea. If it's not considered public records, where is the information stored? Who can view it?

Deedee, I was thinking about teaching overseas. From my understanding, the background check is very intensive, and I thought that I may be denied a work visa because of an Entertainer's license.

KS, thank you for sharing your experience. I have to remind myself I have not commited a crime for dancing!

Texas has a broad definition of what records are public, just about everything any municipality or state agency has. Tx Code Section 552.003. That does not mean that there is a data base. Just that if someone asks, the agency has to hand it over.

One girl at my work told me that casinos do a social security background check. This will tell employers where you got your paychecks from or if you got paychecks at all.

    Quite a few...
I knew a dude who signed up for a 2 year contract here in florida and left last year so he's got one more year to go not sure how he's enjoyed his experience or not.
How'd you get recruited? I know that there's a big difference in (Hagwon) private schools vs. public schools so just be careful you do your research with these schools first.

Some of these private schools will promise you the earth, moon and stars...free ticket round trip there and back home after your one -year stint... and then shut down the very next day and without pay or knowing anybody and without a ticket back home...just make sure you get what they promised you in writing and if they cannot guarantee that then I'd keep looking elsewhere....

Here's a link to a site where you can find out some stories of Americans who did this and their experiences...www.eslcafe.com
also you might want to check out www.travel.state.gov and check out international travel tab about "teaching english in Korea, Opportunities and Pitfalls"

Thank you deedee. I have read about some bad experiences from former teachers...exactly what you mentioned! The problem is getting the contract in writing beforehand.

I found out about it from a University job board. You only need a degree (in any field) to do it?!

I know isnt it a little strange that all you need is a degree?... not even a teaching cert..... nothing.

On that site that I mentioned to you there are some legitimate recruiters who truly are looking out for your best interests with these schools but yes definitely get the contract in writing beforehand is essential.... but also the laws are completely different in that country as compared to the US.

My only real advice to you is, if you do decide to take the gig there, make sure you register with the US Embassy in S Korea AS SOON AS you arrive. This way if (God forbid) anything should happen to you, they'll have some record on your whereabouts and can contact next of kin here in the states. Do you think you definately going to do this?

Good points deedee, and thank you!

From what I have read, the degreed American is a status symbol for some of the schools. It seems that teaching in other areas like Thailand requires more education.

I am still considering it. The experience would be nice, and it would allow me to pay off my student loans. The problem is, I don't feel qualified to teach... I have also never worked with children. Did you consider it too?

Not sure what you mean here. However, I have a Las Vegas entertainer's license and a Nevada business license. None of these have come up on any background checks I've done.

Also, I know two Vegas strippers who are also casino dealers, and this is not an issue, they have both worked at multiple casinos.

Very few strip clubs hire on girls as "employees", where records for FICA payments would be sent to social security administration. The dancer would be required to pay that herself as self-employment income.

Getting an adult entertainer license is not a criminal activity, therefore it will not show up in a criminal background check.

Some municipalities have confidentiality clauses in their sexually oriented business codes. For instance, the Phoenix and Scottsdale laws contain clauses which indicate that all information regarding the entertainer and license will be kept confidential unless requested by a law enforcement agency (like in the event of an arrest, a ticket, a prostitution charge, etc.) This means my licenses will not show up in general background checks.

I don't know what other cities have these clauses. But when you read the laws the information will be there. Or, you can ask the people working in the office. Know what's in the municipal code, and make sure you're comfortable with it before you get the license to work in a particular city.

Don't feel that way at all...From my understanding there's lots of Americans who go there essentially to escape (the states) for whatever reason from these schools or on these recruiting agencies dime...or experience a new culture...and majority are either freshly graduated from College, so they're younger with NO work experience even let alone teaching experience...Yes, I did consider it to be honest, and I am still considering it although I've pretty much put it on the back burner for now.

I would love to visit S. Korea first, before even committing one entire year of my life there....I mean I am pretty adventurous but, A year is a long time to commit yourself to something since I'm not even sure if I'm going to like the culture, etc..(for ex.) even the smalll things like... food, stuff you'd take for granted... I know they have the major restaurant and fast food chains there, eating Korean food constantly all the time....(ummm, not for me) I have never worked with children either, so I'm in the same boat as you.

But from what I've read, S.Koreans have a very high respect level for Americans too, so even if you don't feel qualified to teach, it's not going to make a big difference to them because you've already have the "upper hand" since you can speak/teach English and are "different" from them, hence, non-Korean. Keep me posted if you do go, I would love to know how your experiences there went....Good luck!

    deedee,

Going there would be an opportunity and an escape for me. I am older than most recent college graduates, but I do not have experience either! I would probably learn more than the students!

I know what you mean about the commitment. One year is a long time to commit to a new job in a foreign country you have never been to!

Learning about their culture would be amazing! I have briefly looked into the food there. I had planned on cooking/preparing my own food. When going out, hopefully I could find plain steamed rice and veggies. I'm also interested to see what exotic fruits are available!

I have also read how kind they are. It would feel strange getting respect and kindness for being an American! I will let you know if I end up going, and if you decide to go, let me know too!
