sorry to be such a downer tonight but I'm sick and pissed that I'm not dancing..
what are the other downsides to dancing..I understand the heels aren't good for our feet and shortens the Achilles tendon.
and our knees are taking a beating too![]()

Just wait untold you get bunions and your back gets destroyed. I'm not trying to be a downed, but after dancing over a decade now, and my ankles are really messed up, my back is bad, and I spend a lot on massages....
Yea, my knees are shot to shit.
The heels also warp the curvature of the spine to create the duck butt effect.
The problems caused by stripper shoes can be mitigated, however. For the duck butt, it is good to periodically tighten the abs, tucking the butt in, while straightening the spine.
For the Achilles tendon, you can stand with the balls of your feet on the edge of a step while holding onto the rail, and drop the heels. This also gives a good stretch to the calf muscles, which are flexed by stripper shoes.
Not to mention what is basically a workout in a smoke filled room for 8 hours a night!
The secondhand smoke is definitely a hardcore health hazard.
But I definitely agree this job is hell on our bodies.. If we didnt make so much I'd be outa there.
Im in rehab for my knees as we speak.. And the pains are starting in my back, neck, hips, and all over everywhere else! Even my wrists ache sometimes from pole work...
It's the price we pay..

I now have arthritis. Whether it's from dancing or other reasons (I was an athlete in school) I'll never know. I've had knee surgery and really should have for my ankles too. I have a bad back as well. Also, many years ago I picked up bronchitis in a club and to this day everytime I get sick it comes back (never had it before). Not to mention the issue some women have had due to plastic surgery.
I've been dancing a loooooong time and can't say anything bad has happened w/ my body. I always stretch ... addicting to stretching ... and yoga has been my friend ... this has probably helped a lot.
Re: your cold. I rarely get sick but that last time I got a cold w/ a low grade fever someone told me to take Emergen-C ... you can get it was Walmart, Sam's Club has the best price. That stuff kicked my cold like that! I even felt better the day after I started drinking it. For starters I'd recommend drinking this at least 4 times per day for at least 2 days ... see how you feel on the 3rd day if you should continue the same amount, increase or reduce it. Once you're well drink it once a day. Totally awesome stuff! Oh, the raspberry is super tasty! Hope you get better soon![]()

what are we doing to our bodies? Making enough money to buy a new body, of course!![]()
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

The only issue I've had is chronic achilles tendonitis. My knees have always been shot to hell, so I haven't noticed anything worse from that.

Dancing is hell on your body, to be sure.
That said, I feel like I'm in my best shape ever. To dance at my age, I have to be. Here's what I do to counteract stripping's negative effects on my body:
Even with all this, some days I still feel like I'm 90! But for the most part, I feel pretty darn good and have lots of energy. I know I'm very high maintenance, but I love taking care of my body!
- at least 3 cups of green tea every day
- no fast food, no junk food, basically a healthy, whole foods diet
- supplements: glucosamine, chondroitin, and msm; vitamins C,D,and E; turmeric, ginger, fish oil, evening primrose oil, and calcium
- yoga every day, even if it's just 20 minutes. 3 90-minute classes per week
- cardio 3 times per week, Tracy Anderson, fluidity, or Pilates 5 days a week for muscle toning
- stretch on my ballet barre and then work out all the kinks on my foam roller after work
- deep tissue massage once a month
- I try to have a day of COMPLETE rest every week, but I don't always achieve this.

Stretching the calves helps and strengthening the hip flexors will help the knees.![]()

My knees are an absolute mess too. They hurt almost constantly. But nothing worth having (doing) is ever free ... unfortunately.
I actually feel great after an 8-hour shift, like I've gotten a good workout. Although it may be easier on me since there's no smoking in bars in California, and I work only twice a week and wear only sneakers and flip flops when I'm not working. Also I stretch before I get started and in between sets. Some customers like watching a girl stretch and even come over and ask for a dance.
yah I get pains too but try to counteract by eating well, taking bone strengthening supplements, wearing flats when i'm bot working, staying hydrated, working out/doing strengthening exercises to spare my knees- I dislocated my kneecap being a distance runner before I started dancing so I was in physical therapy for a while and still do the knee and ankle strengthening exercises, it totally gets rid of knee pain- look some up online and give it a shot
I also go to a hot tub/sauna place once a week (its only $12 for a full hour) to get the tightness out of my muscles and clear my head
This job is hard on your body but if you can stay away from the free booze and take good care of yourself you can minimize all of thatIve been dancing for two year 3-5 days a week and have gotten a new car and a hefty savings account with no permanent harm to my body as far as I can tell! I have pulled a back muscle a few times though and gotten lots of bruises....nothing a little arnica and rest wont fix

I always have restless leg syndrome... other than that I'm good. I've been wearing heels since I was about 14, and I don't do much floor work these days.
Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

I have asthma from cigarette smoke and I'm not a smoker. Messed up knees too but a lot of jobs have health hazards. Including bartenders, construction workers, trade workers, factory employees, etc. Even people that work in a hospitals and other public places are exposed to a lot of contagious illnesses.
An advantage to dancing is it keeps you lean. Burns lots of calories, keeps you active, improves your muscle tone. Also, let's face it. Hopefully you make enough money dancing that you don't have to work 40 hours a week so you have time to go to the gym, can afford to eat healthy, etc. I'm usually in better shape when I'm dancing because I eat granola bars and turkey sammiches, and I have more time to go to the gym.

What do you mean it shortens the achilles tendon? Does that make our legs shorter?

Wearing heels shortens your calf muscles. I doubt I have to explain why.

Soooooo true!!! Im damn well gonna age well if I have anything to say about it!!
Of course dancing sucks for your body. It's why I walk out with my feet and back aching, it's why most of the time in the summer without the use of cover up I can't wear cute little skirts and dresses (legs are all bruised)... it sucks. Know what makes me feel better though? That wad a hundys in my lil hands.![]()

I don't think it will affect my body because I only work two days a week and I am health conscious (cept for the drinking)

I think dancing is affecting my body a lot. My back hurts all the time, my ankles get sore, my neck, and my feet take the most beating. My whole back and shoulders have huge knots. My knees hurts quite a bit too. My wrists get sore too from holding my weight up when i do a table dance.
My knees are destroyed, as are my feet. In fact I had to take three months off, two years ago to have foot surgery on my Achilles tendon.
I don't wear pointy toed shoes though as I worked in a nursing home when I was very young and saw what pointy shoes did to women. It crippled some of them and I don't want that.
I not a young chicken though I've been doing this a long time, my body doesn't bounce back like it did almost 20 years ago.
Annnnddddd.....this is depressing.

My knees are killing me as I type this. First time they've ever bothered me. Suckkssssss.....But worth it when you're averaging about 50 bucks an hour without a college degree!
