Default Question about stage fees and tipouts!

First, I'd like to say thanks for all the wonderful advice and support I've found on this site. I don't think I would have had to courage to start dancing without it.

I just started dancing a few weeks ago. I have a very demanding school schedule, so I've only been able to go in a few times. Because I'm new, I haven't had to pay stage fees yet, but after tonight I will have to. Stage fees at my club go up to $150. The average is around $110. In addition, the club takes 20% of your dance money and 20% of what you make in the champagne lounge. I have read that if the club is taking your dance money, you're getting screwed, but having nothing to compare it against, I don't know if it's true. From what I've heard others say about their clubs, these fees seem a little extreme granted that no one at my club is making nearly what they used to before the recession hit. As a newbie, I'm worried about making enough to cover my stage fee AND make me a profit...it seems like I could easily end up in the hole or dancing for free

So I guess my question is whether these fees seem too extreme to anyone else. If so, I'll feel less bad about throwing in the towel...

    Thanks in advance!

The club shouldn't be taking 20% of your dance money AND a house fee... it's one or the other. Paying out on champagne rooms and even individual dances is becoming common. What you really need to be concerned with is what is the average amount the dancers are taking home.

i've worked in clubs where we paid a house fee and the club required we give them a certain amount per dance (for "booth rental")

i avoid clubs like these now and lean towards clubs that collect a house fee and nothing else.

keep in mind that if you're working in a club that takes a huge percentage but you are making a lot of money per shift, you are better off than working at a club with a low house fee where you're not making much at all.

I've worked in both of thse kinds of clubs, and prefer the ones where you only pay a reasonable house (by reasonable, basically you still walk out with the majority of your money). I once worked at a club where you had to pay 50% of a dance and $50 (not to mention tipping out people) and didn't work there long because they got more money from me than I got from me. Personally, that club sounds like a ripoff to me, but once again depends on the money there.

Ugh, it sounds like a Deja Vu, where you can routinely expect to fork over 30-40% to the house. Unless there is another club nearby with a different system, it sounds like you are stuck.
Most clubs know what the other clubs in town are doing, and tend to keep the fees similar so that they don't lose all their girls to the other club.

If you stay at your club, the solution is just to sell sell sell!

Thanks very much for the advice! Earnings are pretty variable right now. The more experienced dancers at my club talk about earning anywhere from nothing to over $1000. If I do stay, I'll have to get better at upselling. My hustle is okay, but on Saturdays (currently the only night I'm free to work) the champagne lounge and even individual dances are a tough sell. It was like extracting teeth last night. After about a month, my best night is a little over $300.
