    Default Power walking?

Any girls on here do power walking or just walk in general for exercise? I am trying to start a mile a day powerwalking. Have a great 10 mile long bikepath where i am.. just plug in my earbuds on my ipod and go! Anyone do this as well? I also do yoga, and i HATE running..

I am a (male) customer, not a dancer, but i do have special expertise on this subject. You are on the right track, as i for a number of years have used an (alternating) walk/run (low injury) distance based approach, sometimes 100% walk, almost everyday, usually combined with swimming perhaps 2 to 3 times a week, (and some use of light weights.)

By distance based I mean I know in general I'm going to moving (walk, run, or crawl) lets say 100 miles a month, but I never worry it on a per day basis, if for example routes change, (when traveling etc) and that is what makes it so enjoyable. It really clears the mind too. In stranger or unfamiliar locations (new cities or beaches or mountains) I don't even want the IPOD, I want to totally absorb the sights and sounds of the place I am at.

Remember the the U.S. Govt through the NIH (via the Institute of Medicine) spent millions studying the exercise issue, and concluded humans (over age 25) pretty much had to move the equivalent of 3 miles a day (one hr) JUST to merely breakeven, in other words to not gain weight into middle age. Yet the govt basically ingnored the study's results, saying it was too hard to tell people the truth. The fact is as the study said, human DNA via evolution requires and presumes a certain exercise level, and going against the 3 to 5 million yr norm, was very high risk to health. Humans were designed to move, its that simple.

Brisk walking (w/o swimming) but with use of lifting 3 to 4 times a week (via 5 to 20 lbs dumbells) can almost do the same thing. As for (over)swinging arms, I don't see the purpose, and one blends in better by avoiding it. the difference in effect is small, and it allows for much more diverse walking or walk/run options.

Ideally people that can start a walk the minute they leave their homes, will do better, because unlike people that drive to gyms, you got a 20 minute headstart on them.

I power walk at least once a week as one of my cardio sessions. Yes, it's a low-intensity cardio workout, but if you walk fast enough and far enough it's a great workout. I hate running, and find elliptical workouts sooooooo boring! You're outside, and you're sparing your joints and tendons.

Power walking is amaizing,I can take the baby with me. I never do intense cardio workouts, its too painful for my smokers lungs! Ill stick to the tredmil in the summer though,it gets waaaay too hot down here for my fat ass to be walking around out side.

I have to do walk/run combos, since I my knees SUCK. Anything helps as long as you are moving. If you want to try it, you can attach weights to yourself to up the intensity a bit.

I walk to and from my gym everyday. Its a 20 minute walk there and a 20 minute walk back. I also walk my dogs everyday- I have 2 border collies and a pointer.

I also do jog/walk fast combos ( bad need like Pap ) and it's a great work out. I travel a lot and it's awesome to just have shoes as the only work out gear I need.

My sister and I go almost every day. She had a baby 8 months ago and this is something we can do with him with us. We have been going consistently for about a month now and it is really helping her shed the post-baby weight she wasn't otherwise having much success losing.
