    Default Sleep paralysis...

'Sleep paralysis'...If you've never heard of this, google it. Anyway I have this a few times a year and it's been going on for atleast 5 years now. When it happens, I usually hallucinate that there is someone in my apartment. It gets scary sometimes. Has anyone else experienced this or know much about it? Imma see a doctor soon about it but I was just curious to hear about anyone else's experiences. Even if it hasn't happened to you, it's an interesting subject to read about.

Yes. I haven't had it happen in several years now, but mine was always accompanied by terrifying nightmares. I don't know much about it, but am extremely grateful that it hasn't happened to me in some six years now. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Let me know what you find out about it.

Sounds about right. I've even had an out of body experience with it before. Its so hard to explain to someone who's never had it. I've also read that some people try to induce it to experience the 'out of body' thing. Its crazy.

I've been experiencing this lately. Just last night as a matter of fact. I slept well over 18 hours and felt drunk and numb when I woke up. I stayed awake for about 5 hours before I felt the need to nap. During my nap I could hear the tv on even in my sleep (if that makes sense). I ended up having a half awake dream about the characters on tv. They were in my room and one was even sitting on the bed while I was asleep. They were asking me questions and I was ansering. It was totally strange. In the end (eventhough I was asleep) I was trying to wake myself up. Hearing my own voice (sleep talking?) eventually snapped me out of it and woke me up.

I don't know much about this, but I plan on making a doctor's appointment first thing in the morning. It's very very scary and it makes me feel like I'm losing my mind.

Argh. I hate that shit. If you have a messed up sleep schedual it can cause it. If I try to wake up from a bad dream, thats when it happens to me. Damn lucid dreams..

Yes I get it all the time. It started when I was around 16. I seriously thought someone was in my room and going to rape me. It was horrifying being unable to move. Now I am used to it, so I can tell myself that there is no one there. But I still hate it. It is just a horrible feeling, not being able to move. I will often snap out of it and then fall back asleep uncontrollably and then cycle through the paralysis a few times. That sucks.

I haven't had it in years, but I used to. Had dreams people were in my room. One time some one punched me in the gut. It's never nice... Never saw a dr though.

    some causes:
Sleeping in a face upwards or supine position
Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
    Increased stress
    Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode.

I for one usually get it when I've had a lucid nightmare. I'm aware that I'm just dreaming so I try to wake up from it,but I guess it wake up too fast? You're brain is awake from REM sleep, but your body isnt. That's what causes it. You can't move while in REM sleep..its so you don't act out your dreams..such as sleep walking.

I've actually had an out of body experience before with it...when it first started happening, I was lying on the floor almost like I was trying to get out of bed but I didn't have the strength to...if that makes sense. I woke up like...wtf just happened??

The few times it has happened to me it has scared the shit out of me. I don't know much about it at all but I'm curious myself.

i used to get it all the time but i dont anymore. i seemed to get it more when i was stressed about things in my life.

after a while i got used to it... i no longer panicked when it happened and usually stopped caring. when i did feel the need to move, i would do something like focus on moving my pinky, and this would slowly take me out of the paralyzed state. think kill bill style wiggle your big toe... it works for sleep paralysis quite well.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I used to get it all the time when I was partying a lot. Now I get it occasionally when I'm really tired. It's horrible!

It's just basically an error in your sleep cycle where you wake up while your body is still semi-paralysed. Basically your brain shuts off your movement when you sleep so you don't act out your dreams/sleepwalk. Sleep paralysis happens to narcoleptics. I was convinced I had narcolepsy for a while. But I realised now I am a hypocondriac....LOL

I've been having this since in my preteens. I'd never met anyone who had it.. I could feel myself going into these "nightmares" and breathe really hard or move my hands to keep awake. I could go into detail.. But I haven't had a dream since I was little. Just night terrors is what I call them. It's horrible.. But I only have them more often when I sleep Aline... I suppose I feel safer when I'm sleeping next to someone.

I've had this my whole life - where I'm from it's called 'The Old Hag'. My mother gets it too. Doesn't freak me out anymore, apparently it's fairly common.

My boyfriend knows to listen to my breathing whenever I seem to be sleeping, and shake me once in a while if it seems labored. After 4 years he's pretty good at knowing when it happens to me immediately. If not, then I just relax and wait till I come out of it. Sucks though, because it'll always happen when my neck starts to hurt or nose itches or something. Murphey's law.

So what are the symptoms of having narcolepsy? Cuz sometimes ill feel this strong sense to go to sleep...and it won't be just a tired feeling...more like a 'if I don't lay down I'm gonna pass out' type thing. So then ill lay down and fall into this intense sleep. Could be normal but these things have been happening a lot lately and its more of an annoyance than anything. Not to mention the fatigue I feel pretty much all day every day.

there is a small fringe group of people out there (including myself...for a long time i was trying to become a cryptozoologist/demonology expert) that think sleep paralysis to be something more...metaphysical???

it's based on an old legend, lots of different names, in laos it's referred to as dab tsog (pronounced "da cho") usually accompanied by the feeling of being suffocated...and many people have reported hearing shuffling footsteps right before it happens.

you may want to look into that...

Has happened to me quite a few times from either being extremely tired/stressed (especially close to my menstrual cycle) or with otc or prescription sleeping pills. I've also woken up out of a few but where I'm still hallucinating and will try to touch an object in front of me and MISS. Is that weird or what?

Like, I'll try to grab my phone or a book and I will see it in front of me, put my hand out to grasp it, and I'm off by a few inches. Weird disconnect. My eyes are wide open and everything and it is as if I'm trying to reach with my eyes closed. Have had my boyfriend watch me do this before, so I know my eyes were really open.

Have also had dreams of being bitten on the ankle or thigh and feeling the bite (and it hurts) and trying to wake up and wanting to rub the part that was bitten but not being able to move. Or trying to scream or move my hands or legs and they feel like they're moving but they aren't.

Lastly, have had horribly lucid nightmares about murder or being in a room with someone who is being strangled beside me by someone straddling them but they won't kill me. My throat will get tight while I'm basically terrified but only once was I also choked but was able to wake myself up and run out of the room!

Luckily, this doesn't happen terribly often and there have been years at a time that will pass without it happening. It's no fun either way, though..

I crash hard a few nights before my menses and usually just have very vivid, dreams, not necessarily bad ones. You may want to chart the time of the month that the paralysis tends to occur.

happened when I was 14 or 15 for the first time and it was an alien encounter. scary at the time, but I'm not scared anymore. Being able to go into the state at will is an awesome gift. I haven't done it in awhile though, I like to just "watch" my unconscious dreams like movies and see what "random" messages they give me.
