Default Need topic ideas for my writing portfolio.

Okay, so I used to write a lot when I was younger. Novels, poetry, etc...and then I got sidetracked by life and being a teenager and all of that.

I really miss it, and I've been looking into freelance writing a lot lately, and I want to get into that. (I'm not expecting more than a few bucks a month, but if I could support my Diet Coke or cigarette habit via writing, then rock on!) But first I'm trying to develop my writing portfolio.

Since it's article-writing, which is a little new to me (most of my writing experience is fiction based) I'm having trouble coming up with topics to write articles on.

I have asked friends and family, only to be met with blank stares, or "Oh, I don't read." (I want to choke people who say that, btw.) So now I am resorting to good ol' SW.

So, any ideas??? Please keep in mind it's for a writing portfolio, so...

    - Something that can be written about in 500 - 800 words.
    - ANYTHING that can be researched via the net.
    - Non-adult please. I don't want to link my non-adult persona to my stripper/escort/camgirl persona.

Anything at all. A how-to article, an article on "history of _______", an expose', any ideas at all will be most helpful. Thanks.

Write about topics that interest you ... the writing will flow naturally. That's what I do when I have the urge to write. Personally I can't write about something that doesn't interest/appeal to me.

I can make suggestions but not sure if any of these will interest/inspire you:

    > Adventurous outdoor activities
    > Travel
    > Personal empowerment
    > Nutrition
    > Health benefits of exercise
    > Fun things to do in (city that you love)

Write about something you enjoy doing, have experience in, or is one of your favorite hobbies. Once you have a topic, then just tell a story about that topic. Trust me, if I can write, anyone can.
Have we not heard the chimes at midnight?

Once more, unto the breach, dear friends.

If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?

-- Its always amazed me how no one learns the lines from Shakespeare. I guess it is true that people don't learn history's lessons until something become's their history.

Go to philanthropy events and offer to do write ups in the local paper on the events. It's a great way to network!

Basic subjects that interest you: travel, food, movies, poetry, music or show reviews.

Do you specialize in anything? Write a 'how to' or step-by-step.

What are your political views on current events? Go to any news site get outraged or inspired and write about it.

What can you add to a subject that everyone seems to be talking about or what are subjects that you feel are neglected and feel you need to shed some light on.
