take a deep breath. i hate to advocate zoning out in front of the boob tube, but mindless entertainment has its place.
Do you do any kind of art??? Painting, jewelry making, knitting? It sounds dumb, but anything that will zone you out in this case is a good thing.
DON'T get drunk. If you're feeling self destructive alcohol has a way of encouraging you to go through it.

I call someone on the phone and just have mindless conversations with them.
A funny movie is always good too.

Force myself to do stuff with friends or just get out to get my mind off whatever it's on.
Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

Keep in mind that these feelings are temporary, it's only a matter of time till they subside.

a warm shower
then I light some incense and a candle
then I meditate
I stare into the candle flame make it the focus of my entire being I force the negativity into the fire and I watch it burn
or I just try to get laid depending on how much time I have
Stuff myself with candy.
Reach out to a friend. If no one is around, be your own best friend. How would you help a friend in need who feels the same way you do? Take good care of yourself <3

Start by finding either an artistic or physical/athletic outlet for your rage or sadness...
Artistic - Blast the radio to music that reflects your state of mind. Then, you can either (1) write about how you feel (poetry or prose) or (2) buy a large canvas and a lot of paint and just splatter the paint on the canvas so that it reflects how you feel (dark and gloomy colors, fenzied lines with no cohesion, thick paint, etc.) A lot of famous artists suffered from extreme bouts of depression. Express your feelings through art. I have no talent, but its cathartic to me.
Physical/Athletic - Join a gym and take up kickboxing, etc.,... or join a cycling club, rock climbing club, kayaking club, etc. Physical exertion is a great way to deal with depression.
Also,... sleep it off... This is a good short-term strategy, but not a long-term solution.
Also,... find someone to talk to about your problems. If its not too personal, you can always post them here and get helpful advice.
Also,... you can reflect on religion or spirituality - if you've lost someone you love.
You're not alone... Many have been there.

If I have the time, I try to go for a walk. It easy physically, so you can do it even if you are really sore from work or exercise. It is a naturally meditative activity.
I find it very useful for reducing anger, when I get mad I can start getting into an incoherent rage - but then I go for a walk and 5 minutes later can have a completely normal conversation explaining my needs and frustrations.
It is also good to break out of a funk. Plus if the weather is nice, sunshine has been shown to have an uplifting effect on mood. It is even good for learning, taking a quick walk break from studying can really improve your ability to recall information.

If it's not too personal, why do you feel so self destructive and hopeless at the moment?
The thing to do is try and understand why you have these feelings and then work on the causes. For example, if part of your problem is that you're struggling to find decent friends, think of joining a few clubs or societies.
If you're feeling jaded with with your current job, but don't have any alternative, take up a course of study so you can see an escape route from your job in a year or so's time.
Part of the secret is to break your problem down into a lot of smaller ones. You can't solve all of the problems immediately, but the feeling that you're starting to solve one or two give you hope that your life will slowly get better.....
Phil.
Thanks Phil,
I can feel hopeless sometimes when my problems seem impossible to break down, because I feel there is not a simple solution. I realize it's mostly my negative perception.
Sometimes I'll lie back, close my eyes, and let my feelings happen. Rather than trying to get rid of them, I'll just feel them for 15 minutes or more. Instead of intellectualizing it all (why am I feeling this way? how can I get rid of it asap?), I look at where I'm feeling hopelessness or sadness (for example) in my body. I find that even if it intensifies temporarily, it then calms down because I let the feelings happen.

For 20 odd years I would get absolutely roaring drunk.
These days, I meditate on the feelings and try to let them go. Or go for a drive into the country and get back in touch with Nature. Or - I veg out in front of the TV and eat chocolates, or buy some new high heels (!!), or cuddle the cat! I also Pray (but that last one's just personal choice).

Thank You :-)
I agree with you 1,000%! I LOVE Nature. We live only 2 minutes from the beach, so I often go down after midnight and yes, sit and watch the clouds go past the moon whilst listening to the waves lapping on the beach, and I think....this World used to be like this ALL the time once......it's powerful....and SOO peaceful.

i exercise...i like to kickbox, or i will do tae bo and pretend billy blanks' face is whoever i'm mad at. you'll feel better, plus get some awesome arms.
i also like to play my violin when i'm upset. i like to play the dark pieces and it resonates with my soul. gradually, i will work my way up and begin to play lighter music. my mood starts to get better. i also dance as well when i'm sad and kind of do the same thing, dancing to darker music, then work my way up to fluff lol.
since i'm close to the mountains, i will hike. i climb to the top, and stare below at the town, and think. sometimes i cry. other times i yell and scream. i concentrate on my breath and try to just be. after this, i usually feel much better.
hope things get better for you. =]

Going for a run always lifts my spirits. Also finding someone to talk to. Hope you feel better soon.
