Default I'm writing a screenplay about life in a strip club.

This however, will NOT be your typical screenplay about strippers.

They're always portrayed as hopelessly fucked up (a la Showgirls) or in some crazy deep intrigue or life as a single parent or whatever (case in point Striptease).

I'm a big fan of "slice of life" movies like Waiting, Empire Records, and The Breakfast Club, and it's gonna follow that outline. ONE DAY in the life of strip club employees.

I'm going to collect some of my more memorable moments working in the club and combine into one day.

Portraying strippers as normal people. Witty people. I want it to be funny and entertaining. There will be drama (what strip club doesn't have drama???) but I really want to portray the way that we see it. Very Tarantino-esque without all the blood and hails of gunfire.

There will be T and A (obviously) but it will be very much in the background. You'll basically only see it in short bursts. Except for one scene that's very memorable to me...one night a huge stripper fight broke out in the dressing room at my club, the majority of the girls involved were in nothing but their g-strings. It was absolutely hilarious.

My best male friend is an indie film director so he's going to direct it when it's finished.

I have so much stressing me out right now with my family and friends that I NEED a light-hearted fun project to throw myself into.

I'll keep everyone posted on its progress!

I was once cast in a theatrical play where all the strippers had a happy ending to their story. It actually bugged me, since it didn't correspond to real life. The whole play was overly happy. Then I found out there was a bunch of illegal stuff planned - like not getting rights to use music, and that my character was based on a local real life associate of mine. I called the director and quit. I didn't want to have anything to do with it.

I think people appreciate things that either mimic real life or are totally bogus -funny.

    Good luck with your project!

Ugh, getting rights to music -- particularly mainstream music is such a pain. Gonna go the indie route on that.

This is my third screenplay, I've started writing a bit. I want it to portray strippers as realistically as possible instead of JUST sex symbols or proverbially broken people.

Hasn't someone already done this? Actually, it would be stretching the point, because the best film about life in a strip club I've ever seen is "Dancing at the Blue Iguana," directed by Michael Radford, and there isn't much of a screenplay because the film is largely improvised. Daryl Hannah, who plays Angel, was the only name I recognized, although other actors have a number of credits, often a LOT of television.

But Blue Iguana doesn't follow the formula you've outlined. In many ways quite realistic, and in some ways exaggerated. It's not so much about a strip club as about the transformations and choices various characters face while they happen to work in a club. It works precisely for this reason. Sad and interesting but hopeful. I recently encountered it on cable but can't remember the network.

Good luck. And it would really be worth your while to rent and study the film if you've not already.

^^^^ There's been a number of stripper based movies. However, it seems that they never end up being really well done, and society can never seem to get enough of them.

You know that Dancing At the Blue Iguana is the movie that inspired Shelia Kelly to take up pole dancing and create "S Factor"... which is when pole dancing became popular in Hollywood & L.A.

    ^^

I've heard of that one! I hear it's great. *adds to NetFlix*

Good luck on the screenplay! I often wish I could structure an authentic storyline about my lived experience as a sex worker. I love screenplays, too. Have fun writing it!

Dancing at the Blue Iguana is an awesome movie, and probably the most realistic stripper movie out there. I remember seeing it on late-night HBO once when I was maybe 15 and thinking strippers were so cool, lol.

But I watched it again recently, and it's definitely one of those movies where all the strippers are broken people who have been sucked into the club lifestyle. Still a good movie though!

This is a cool idea! I like the feel you're going for - that funny with a dark-reality type. I also like the idea of a story about strippers that doesn't focus on JUST stripping. So little of the job is about taking our clothes off. Best of luck with it!

idk i thought dancing at the blue iguana was the stereotypical sob story that made us all look like drug addicted wrecks who would all perform extras for the right price.

personally im a fan of zombie strippers. i think that is the most accurate portrayal of a strip club that i have ever seen!
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

No I totally agree that it was a stereotypical sob story that made us look like train wrecks. But a lot of the little details of strip club life were accurate, whereas in most stereotypical stripper sob story movies they totally aren't.

I really wanna see zombie strippers now!
