Default Cure Breast Cancer With Fried Chicken

In what may be one of the most ironic and distasteful ad campaigns I think I have ever seen, is the new Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) campaign “Buckets for the cure” where they donate fifty cents per bucket (a pink bucket no less…) toward breast cancer research via the Susan B. Komen For The Cure Foundation. It reads like a Saturday Night Live skit (and I really thought it was a joke when I first saw it!) but it’s for real.

Buy a bucket of original recipe or grilled, and they donate to the foundation. Let’s start with the basics:

    (1) Obesity- and obesity related diseases- kill more people by far then breast cancer.

(2) Obesity is linked to breast cancer! (1)

    (3) Fried foods are linked to a variety of cancers.

    (4) Obesity is linked to various cancers (2)

Do I really need to go on? Really? What’s next, BigMacs for curing colon cancer? I can see why KFC would jump at this PR opportunity, but the people at Susan B. Komen For The Cure Foundation should have their heads examined. This is where the end does not justify the means. There’s very few things one can eat less healthy then KFC original recipe (or does anyone think it’s the grilled chicken everyone is buying because of all those health conscious people known to eat at KFC…)

As a person who has had cancer, I consider this as bad an idea, as insulting an idea, as dumb an idea, as I think I have ever seen. It’s a slap in the face to women who have had breast cancer as far as I am concerned, and I hope those women out there will let it be known selling unhealthy foods to people for a 50 cent donation is not appreciated. To those at the Susan B. Komen For The Cure Foundation, times may be tough, but there’s a line where the end does not justify the means, and you crossed it.

If you think I’m making any of this up, or exaggerating, see:

I don't mind this at all. People are going to buy KFC whether it makes charity donations or not. Hopefully these donations will do some good.

Honestly im sick of 'this is linked to cancer that is linked to cancer etc etc etc' EVERYTHING is linked to cancer. If we're going to live like that then we might as well live in a bubble... though who knows, the bubble may cause cancer

Honestly people are going to eat KFC regardless. Im the first to raise my hand and say I LOVE their chicken fries and popcorn chicken

And im not laughing at the idea of cancer. I've lost some very close relatives and friends to cancer, which is why I think that any money donated to cancer research is great. If people wanna clog their arteries with kfc well at least have money going towards charity for it.

Will my point is, people are going to eat kfc regardless. So might as well have money raised from it. This isn't going to change the amount of people who eat it.

Also im sure there is more of a link between fried foods to heart disease then there is to cancer. Like I said, if we avoided everything that apparently caused cancer we would live in bubbles.

I agree that people will continue to eat shitty food regardless of what kind of spin the advertising biz puts on it. I guess this is intended to make people feel good about choosing to support a company that slaughters thousands (maybe more) of chickens in horribly inhumane ways every year?

What I've never understood about people who buy products that donate a few cents to random charities, is that you could easily just donate money directly to the charity without spending money on something you may not have looked twice at otherwise. Oh well.

I'd agree with the OP--it's false advertising. In reality, it probably won't make much of a difference, but it's definitely misplaced as a campaign.

I see no link between KFC and breast cancer except it makes it even more obvious that the fried food market is trying to improve its reputation. "We may kill chickens inhumanely and contribute massively to obesity problems, but look: donations to breast cancer!"

It's truly nothing new that the fast food industry is trying to refocus its customers on any issue but the unhealthy nature of the foods they serve daily. Think about McDonalds advertisements--the recent ones that use fresh, healthy foods as visuals to imply that what they serve is equally healthy. NOT.

I've seen charities turn their noses up at donations from strippers, for whatever fucked up reason. Who cares who raised the money? It's for a good cause, and they didn't have to do it. That's good enough for me. How can some entity that does "bad" redeem themselves, if not by doing good?
