Default Fun Poll in a Sort of Morose Way

How long will humans be the dominant species on Earth? Take a rough guess and explain what you think will be our undoing, unless you believe we'll be here until the planet is destroyed by the sun's explosion in a few billion years.

Modern humans have been recognizable for about 60,000 to 80,000 years. (The Earth is about 4 billion years old and the Universe is about 18 billion years old. More explanation of humans in the next post.) But we seem to be self-destructive in a myriad of ways.

The question that comes up is -- how much longer will humans be the dominant species on Earth.

    Do the poll now.....

I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

Humans (homo sapiens sapiens) evolved (so it seems) over at least a million years with several branches that somewhat resembled our species. The last near-humans were the Neanderthals (homo neanderthalis) who died out mysteriously maybe 20,000 - 30,000 years ago, co-existing in time with our current species. Modern humans developed as a superior species because of our adaptability; we developed brainpower and societies because of changing climatic conditions that caused us to learn needed skills and socialization for mutual survival. On East Africa's plains, we had little else going for us. Climatic conditions forced many waves of humans to move out of Africa, past the Gulf of Suez into the middle easy and beyond. Some were able to survive there and stayed on. As we did move on, evolutionary forces made minor changes in us. And in the relatively short time on an evolutionary scale, we developed many cultures and some genetic traits. Those cultures adapted to local conditions or moved on, or died out over tens of thousands of years. (The common thought is that this evolutionary diversity was not enough for us to develop separate species, but we did develop several races as sub-species. <Not sure I believe this.>)

The rest is history. Will we be done in by ourselves (wars, pollution, incurable diseases, overpopulation), a massive asteriod collision, or who knows what?

How much more time do we as a species have on Earth? What will be our undoing?

We'll be dominant until disease, natural disaster, or something huge wipes out most life on the planet.

I want you to make a specific choice. Almost forever is not what I believe you meant. I'm going to choose 10,000 years but I think I'm optimistic. that is, if we avoid disaster from asteroids/comets, and other NEO, and we finally learn to live with/control our CO2 obsession. If I wanted to be pessimistic and that we will not avoid dessicating the planet, I'd say 1000 years. Or so.

It's interesting that the Earth's magnetic field (pointing up to the north) is decreasing rapidly. That is due to magnetic currents in the Earth's molten, heavy metal core. The decrease and even pole reversal has occurred several times in the geological age. I just wonder how much this will affect earthquakes, volcanoes, plate techtonics, etc. Probably little, but you never know. A few miles of the Earth's crust and our fragile atmosphere is the difference between life and death on this little but hot planet.

^^ Let's hope it isn't big spineless blobs of fat with huge heads. But there isn't too much that can happen in 10,000 years except disease resistance.

I don't think any of us will live that long.

If there is reincarnation, it's a sure thing that nobody living now with such a past has learned anything from their "previous life". And whatever, wherever, you are then, I'll bet "you" aren't communicating with yourself to find out.

And that's why I thought it would be amusing to talk about it now.
