    Default Portland, anyone?

I'm considering moving to Portland (Oregon, not Maine). It wouldn't be for another ~2 years since I'm still in school, but I'm still thinking about it now. I've been there for visits and got a good 'vibe', but good feelings are very intangible.

Does anyone here live in Portland? Can I pick your brain for a minute? What, in your opinion, are the pros and cons of life in Portland? If you weren't born there but moved there as an adult, how was the adjustment? Did you feel like you fit in right away, or did you struggle to make friends and feel like an outsider for awhile?

Most importantly to me...what is the performing-arts scene like? Whenever I consider moving, I want a city where indie "grassroots" art flourishes. In your opinion, is Portland that kind of place?

BTW, I'm not planning on dancing there, so I don't care about the club scene. But anything else you could tell me about your city; I'd love to hear it! Like I said, I've been for visits, and my impressions so far have been really positive; I like that it seems less commercialized than a lot of other cities, and it feels laid-back yet still "city-like". And so gorgeous and *clean*! Especially compared to what I'm used to. :p

Have you thought about Asheville, NC? It's one of my favorite cities.

Absolutely beautiful, fairly clean, and the indie arts/performing arts scene is RIDICULOUS. lots of artists and writers and musicians and dancers everywhere.

It's pretty much hippie central, and so laid back.

I would live there if my psychotic ex and my psychotic stepbrother weren't living there...the city isn't big enough for the 3 of us.

no, but I will check it out; thanks for the suggestion! What is the weather like there? One of the main draws of Portland is actually the abundance of grey misty rainy weather. maybe I'm strange, but I love the sort of weather that most people think is gloomy and depressing, and I can't deal at all with a lot of bright sun and/or heat.

oh and that sucks that psycho people are keeping you out of a place you love. I'm so sorry you have to deal with that.

If you love the grey, misty rainy-ness, then this is definitely the place for you to be.

"What, in your opinion, are the pros and cons of life in Portland? If you weren't born there but moved there as an adult, how was the adjustment? Did you feel like you fit in right away, or did you struggle to make friends and feel like an outsider for awhile?"

Pros for you are the cons for me. I love the sun & intensely dislike the yucky rainy, gloomy stuff. I love Portland area late spring thru early fall. I've been here 15 years. I don't struggle to make friends. I find people here to be neutral...not overly friendly, but not at all mean. Of course, I'm sure this depends on the area you live. I'm in Oregon City now, and have never lived in Portland. I really love it here, aside from the weather.

"Most importantly to me...what is the performing-arts scene like? Whenever I consider moving, I want a city where indie "grassroots" art flourishes. In your opinion, is Portland that kind of place?"

I'm not sure what you mean by the above, but it's definitely an artsy kind of place. Portland itself has a lot to offer in the performing arts, museums, Saturday market has performers sometimes...on and on. Just depends on what exactly you are into.

I also love that the beaches are only 1 1/2 hrs away! e mail me if you want any more info. I'd love to help. I don't check my msgs on here very often, so e mail is best.

If you don't mind the rain it's awesome. It's artsy, friendly and has an air of tolerance and experimentation.
