Default So my kitten just pretty much died...

A week ago I rescued a kitten from a woman with too many animals that she couldn't take care of. I noticed the kitten (Duncan) was really skinny and pretty lathargic. All he wanted to do was sleep or cuddle and had zero interest in playing. Friday I took him to the vet for his shots and I told them about him being so lathargic and they said he was probably just still nervous and sad from being in a new environment since he was eating and using the litterbox with no problems. He also didnt have worms. They were just so worried how he was so skinny and they told me just to increase his food. So now its Tuesday at 2 am and I go to pick up Duncan and he has literally no muscle control and goes limp. He can't even lift his head up or meow. I rush to the 24hr. emergency vet and as soon as I put him on the counter he basically stopped breathing and I just lost it. At first they thought he was diabetic since his blood sugar was so low it couldnt even be recorded but then they found out that his abdomen is full of fluids. They quickly inserted a catheter and hooked him up to a bunch of iv's. They have no idea what's wrong it could be a number of things. Right now they are trying to keep him alive. They told me to go home while he stays over night and they will call me. They also told me if I hadn't brought him in within the hour he would have died on my couch. I'm just a freaking mess right now. It's 3 am.. I have no idea what's wrong with Duncan (or even if he will survive through the night). I cannot deal with this right now. Sorry it's such a long story I am just so hurting right now.

(Below are pictures of Duncan. He is such a good little kitten. Even though he was in pain he would still find the strength to purr and cuddle with you.)

Oh my god baby, I am so sorry! You have a done a great job at taking care of him and have done everything in your power to make sure he's gonna be okay.. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you. I read this and brought my kitten into bed with me for some cuddle time.. I feel bad because I was mad at him earlier for destroying my new espadrilles Now I'm just grateful that he's healthy and hope that your kitty will be too!

Oh my, how horrible! It sounds like you did everything a concerned parent could do, and now the rest is up to the doctors. I'm so sorry about your kitty - Duncan is adorable! I hope he is able to recover from this. Let us know how it goes. Hugs going out to you and your kitten!!! XOXO!

I just had to put Duncan to sleep this morning. He had FIP which is a fatal virus in which there is no cure. FIP is caused from contaminated food/water with fecal matter and dirty surroundings. The woman I rescued him froms house was so atrocious that he caught this disease. His whole life he was in pain and suffering. I tried soooo hard to give him a good life.

And I want to kill that woman. She had animals running around everywhere and at least 2 litters of kittens going. If my kitten had the virus the others must have as well. This just hurt so bad. I couldn't even be there when they put him down. It is all just too painful for me right now.

^ Sorry to hear about this cayday. I've been through something like this when my Golden Retriever pup was hit by a car and died. The pain (and denial) is overwhelming. I was expecting her ghost to show up any minute, lick my face and tell me she is all okay in the other side.

Maybe you should try joining a grieving support group for a few weeks. I didn't know they had those for people who have lost pets, but they do - because its extremely painful.

Awww. Poor Duncan. I'm so sorry for your loss. I have four cats. 3 are "rescues". I literally plucked "Munchkin" and "Buster" off the street. Both were abandoned at around 3 weeks and had to be bottle fed.

When you are feeling better maybe you could adopt another kitten from a reputable shelter. So many need good homes and you are obviously a loving and caring "cat person". It doesn't work for everybody, but often times a new kitten or puppy helps to cushion the loss.

Your story also highlights how some well meaning people can actually end up doing harm to the dogs, puppies, cats and kittens they are supposedly trying to help. Running a private shelter is a LOT of work and keeping it clean is essential. Sick kitties and doggies have to be quarantined. Food and water have to changed and kept fresh. Litter boxes have to be emptied and changed. Dogs have to be walked and picked up after. Too many of these places are run by "eccentrics" who are really mentally ill. They don't spay or neuter; don't use a vet; don't keep their places clean etc. etc. Above all, there has to be a limit of how many animals are there at one time. There is NOT always "room for one more".

I'm so sorry for your loss honey, he was a gorgeous little thing and I know how you feel. I absolutely adore cats (I've had 8!!) and I lost three kittens once, after they were only 4 weeks old.

Do you have an Animal Welfare organisation over there, like we have here with the RSPCA? You can report the breeder for being unfit to keep animals....they should prosecute if animals are in pain or distress (and that includes unhealthy living conditions).

i'm so sorry. something similar happened to my friend. her cat was about 1 year old and was sick so we were taking her to the vet and was meowing the whole car ride there and suddenly she stopped. when we got into the vet i checked her and couldn't hear a heartbeat so we rushed to another hospital and she didn't make it. it was so sad so i'm so sorry to hear about your lost. i lost my cat who was fighting congenital heart disease and didn't make it past four years (a lot longer than expected)

my heart truly goes out to you. if it's any consolation at least you got the kitten out of a bad environment and duncan had a real loving home, even if it was for a little bit and that in itself is commendable. we're all here to support you and try to help you cope. again :hugs: i'm so sorry.

My Cat that I was talking about passed away from FIP. I'm sorry huni. Very few cats can live a normal life with it. A kitten that gets it has tiny percent of making it to a year old. After that they may be luck to make it pass two or three. My older cat got it from the younger one and he is doing just fine. If an older cat gets it their chance of survival are higher. He is eight and got lucky I guess.

It is such a hard disease to live with a kitten that has it. They are so sweet and loving and relax but it is like they know they aren't going to make it so they just let it be.

I'm so sorry this happened to your kitten. You have a great heart to be rescuing a kitten in that kind of situation. Even if it was short lived, you made it better for him.

^^^ I totally agree with Pixie. FIP is very bad. I've been in the situation before of having to decide right then if I was going to put my kitty to sleep (she was 20 in human yrs w/ diabetes, liver problems, etc.). Anyhow, when her time finally came I took her to the 24hr vet and they basically told me she was going to pass - she was just that age. I couldn't bring myself to have her put to sleep. She died in my arms at home, and I will say that it was a TERRIBLE experience... she really struggled. Now I realize I was being selfish because I wanted her to live so badly when she was in such a terrible state. If I could go back I would have her put to sleep... sometimes it is just the more humane thing to do.

You did the right thing... just take comfort in knowing that.

I'm so sorry honey. I just lost my dog a cpl weeks ago and the pain is still overwhelming. You did everything you possibly could though and I'm sure he loves you for that. And now he'll look over you as an angel.

I would def call authorities on that woman though...how awful!

Thank you everyone for your support. I just got off the phone with animal control and neighborhood welfare and I reported her for way to many animals than the city allows and unhealthy living conditions for the animals. They will let me know what happens but they said most likely she will be fined/animals will be removed from the property. She took my Duncan away and most likely all those other kittens lives as well. She deserves everything thats coming to her.

    omg. that's sooooooo sad.

several years ago, i had to put a one year old, very small sweet fluffball of a cat to sleep because she had been poisoned, the treatments hadn't worked, and i didn't want her to suffer. her brother had died the night before in a pretty brutal way, basically asphyxiating on his own blood. two other cats died too, one at home before we knew anything had happened, the other of a heart attack after the treatment had seemed to work...it was all just too much for his body. sad times. part of me still feels bad for putting her to sleep, but it must have been better to go that way.

duncan was a beautiful little guy. it's hard, but at least you can know you gave him a loving home and did your best to care for him. that's more than a lot ever get, even the healthy ones.

i hope you get another kitten or cat when you feel ready. you're clearly a very good cat owner.

That's so sad. My mom is an animal hoarder and it's a sickness that everyone sees but them. I can't bear to be around her or hear about her cats. I've rescued a pit bull before that was 5 weeks old and nearly starving, and she was stolen out of the yard when she was about a year old. I hate to think what her fate was.

This really upsets me because I know first hand what it's like to deal with hoarders. I hope the shelter can do something, but most places don't care. I've thought about reporting my mom just so the animal shelter would take her cats but I doubt it would do any good... hoarders don't believe they are doing anything wrong or that they are actually harming animals. It really is a sickness.

I really hope some kind of justice is sought here. I can't even watch humane society commercials without crying. I'm sorry for your loss... but maybe some of those other kittens can be saved because of it.

You are so wonderful to take in that little kitty and give him so much love. I am sorry that you didn't have much time with him.

My twelve year old cat passed away from FIP so I learned as much as I could so that I could understand what was happening to her. It affects younger cats (under one year) or older cats whose immune systems have weakened.

Thank you for caring not just for your Duncun, but also for the others that were living in such unhealthy surroundings. Again I am sorry that you lost your kitty.
