I know that much has been made about the strangling of the Sumter county toddler by the family burmese. I don't condone irresponsible ownership, but neither do I support wiping out an entire industry. Are there any Florida residents who can offer any insight?

I'm not sure either. If we already have them here then why is it such a big deal? You would think people would just breed the ones that are already here.

I'm not a fan of snakes personally. I can say that I know for sure that I wouldn't want to increase my chances of seeing one in the wild though!

Don't think you would like my house! I have one of my snakes in my lap right now!
But I think its because they are destroying alot of the natural ecosystem in the everglades, according to FWC. One thing people need to understand is these snakes are not for everyone. I would not advocate Joe Average owning one of my reticulated pythons.

I don't know many people that are into snakes if they didn't grow up with them either. Seriously, they pretty much scare me the same way as spiders do. So yes, I wouldn't be promoting anything that meant having more of them being let out into the wild in mass numbers... like breeders selling to owners who decide they don't want them. If not having them imported means cutting down on that, then I would probably be for it.

I'm a Florida resident, and exotic snakes are infesting the everglades and moving northward. They are messing up the ecosystem big time.

I hate to wipe out an entire industry as well, but it's been proven that there are not enough responsible snake owners to allow exotic snakes to be kept privately.

Actually, that goes for all exotic animals, in my opinion. People can't be trusted to keep them from getting in to the ecosystem and wreaking havoc.

don't mean to play the devil's advocate, but Hurricane Andrew in '92 did wipe out alot of reptile hatcheries and blow some of those snakes into the everglades where they established a breeding populace. but I do agree about there being too many irresponsible owners who don't know what they're getting into. My babies are alot of work and not something I take lightly.

Same goes for my cats, they're bengals (part asian leopard mixed with siamese & tabby). The older one is very close to being a full asian leopard. I have a cat pen outside that they can come and go from. Somehow they STILL manage to catch wild birds. Luckily none have died, but it doesn't thrill me when they bring them in the house. I worried that a squirrel might be next.

Are you worried about the transmission of diseases? I got a little worried when my cat used to get his little paws on a PRARIE DOG!!! How in God's name he managed that I'll never know.

wiping out an entire industry is ridiculous. maybe if they forced personal owners to get a liscense or something? probably wont help too much, but maybe if the license costed money then some of the dumber owners wouldnt rush out to buy exotic snakes. i wonder how they specifically selected these 7 species?

i used to own a few snakes. they make awesome pets... especially for people like me who are too busy to micromanage a pet.

also, it would drive the sales underground. there will always be places to purchase anything. some owners a pet shop in jersey near where i grew up a while back that actually had their own mini black market going... they had some definitely illegal reptiles in their stash...
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

Florida residents are required to have their "reptiles of concern" microchipped and purchase an annual permit. But I definitely agree that the industry will be driven underground.

I keep them up to date on all their shots, but I still worry. I'm totally a worry wart though. However, I do think it's good for them to be able to go outside. I don't like how some people let their pets just roam free... there's nothing worse than seeing one that's been killed by a driver or coyote, but at the same time I think they need outdoor time.

Besides, even when I used to "supervise" they would catch thinks. The baby was notorious for catching grass hoppers. She would cry when I'd take them away from her... it was really pathetic sounding. At least now that they have daily access to go outside they seem to have laid off on catching things as often. I guess they are less amused now that they are used to going outside.
