i don't think you were out of line, it's not like you were talking dirt about her. She sounds like a drama queen who will get worked up over every perceived slight (real and imagined). Personally that's not someone i'd want to deal with daily. You shouldn't have to walk on eggshells in your own home.

Do you have a fall back plan right now? Because this situation doesn't exactly seem like bliss. But I can understand if it's an issue of options and necessity.

I would just try to be more direct with asking her. Like, in asking if there's anything you should be aware of, it still might not be enough to prompt an open and honest discussion. You know how us girls are sometimes, we're like "no, everything's fine...just fine..." (when really we're steaming inside). I would say something like, "I feel like you're upset with me, and I'm not really sure why. Is it okay if we talk about it?" This way it's non-aggressive and might open up the communication a bit.

Start looking for somewhere else to live, nothing good will come out of moving in with them.

i don't think you were out of line to call the guy since you used to be close friends. i wouldn't live with her b/c something WILL happen, even if you patch this thing up. for example, what if she gives him keys and then starts to think that yall are foolin around? its too messy.

if u need a place to stay soon and don't think you can secure a lease in time, check craigslist for sublets. this could be awesome, esp if you live in a town w/ a college. hope this helps
