    Post Bartending

Bartending has been one of my favorite hobbies ever since I make my first volcano shot. I also been trying to find a bartending job but no luck so far. I been thinking of going to a bartending school, a real hands on and not online school to see if that will help me get a better chance but I'm having trouble finding and picking a good school in or near my state. I'm living in Iowa and most of the jobs I find say they are looking for certified and experienced bartenders.

Any help? A name and place is ok but maybe how you came acrossed it and what you think about it.

    Thank you.

I'm in a different state, but bartending school really didn't help me much at all. If bars in your area require certification, I'd get recommendations from them as to how/where to get it.

that and also when i lived in vegas folks out there were not trying to hire people that went to school for bartending.. they took it as its one of those fields you cant really be taught like in a school setting..they would rather hire some1 that shadowed a bartender somewhere and interned in a bar over some1 that just graduated from bartending school..somethings u just can't be taught. u have to experience it first hand and in a live situation. try looking around at a few bars in ur area ask around..as anywhere some bars will be on that we not hiring and other will give u the opportunity to come in and learn the ropes and go from there
still here.... just in another chapter..

I wish.. The reason I'm asking is most tell me find a class cause they will not train and I asked where but no one knows a place inside iowa.. I keep looking for a place to shadow someone but I still get the class comment.. I train at home alot, almost a year with home school bartending and I still have no luck.. Out of boredom I'm working my way up to fifty shot recipes. I will not bet money but it feels like they only want out of state bartenders.. Iowa sucks.. I want out..

I'm having the same issue. I want to bartend, not serve... but it looks like I'll have to start at the bottom and work my way up. That's pretty much how it goes.

Don't waste your money or time with bartending schools.

There's no guarantee you'll get a bartending job. It's really all who you know, do you live in big city in Iowa? If not, Is there an option to move to a bigger city in Iowa w/ more opportunities to bartend?

I bartended for years at multiple places and no one ever seemed to hire or take anyone seriously just because they'd been to bartending school - or practiced 'flair bartending' but had no work experience. Like many other jobs, with this one, experience really seemed to be key. I started as a waitress/server at a nightclub, and sort of moved from there... if you can convince a new club/bar that you come with experience and are capable, confident and trustworthy with the cash register (and mixing drinks on demand) -, then that's what really matters. I really wouldn't recommend attending a school/course in bartending as a means to find employment - but take one if it's out of interest or for fun!

several friends did the whole bartending school thing and have never worked at a bar since. in most cases i think its a waste of time and money.

the easiest way to get a bartending job is to either have previous bartending experience or really get to know someone who runs/works at a bar. A lot of bars seem to be tight knit groups of people (regulars) and if you become a regular, you may be able to wedge yourself in there when a job becomes open. you could also take a serving job at a bar and work your way up eventually. its a competitive field really. sometimes people get lucky if the bar is willing to let them train.

Thanks for the info. I did get a interview friday, but I doubt I will get the job. I just find it hard to be a regular when you don't drink but one day I will get in.
