Default Depression, thyroid, progesterone...I can't do this anymore

I have always suffered from depression, and it became REALLY bad when I turned 31 (I am 36), got a lot better when I was treated for hypothyroidism (still am). However, I still have, out of the blue, horrible episodes. I can't function, it controls my life, I think about nothing else 24 hours a day. I know it's not due to anything that's going on in my life right now-I have a great job as a translator, I dance once a week which I love, and am very thankful for my life. I did break up with my bf recently, but this was going on even before that. It disrupts my life so fucking much. I used to do 2 hours of yoga every morning (6 days/week) w/o fail, now I show up for 20 minutes and have to leave because I can't stop crying. I sometimes have to go to the bathroom at work or sit in my car because I can't stop crying.I can't fucking do this anymore.

The thyroid meds have helped a lot, and I have my levels monitored regularly, but I still don't feel 100%. So I decided to have my progesterone levels checked and they came back as fairly low (level 4, normal levels are 3 to 20). My question-has anyone ever had low progesterone levels and had it impact their mood severely? I am going to start supplementation in a week, but i wanted to find out beforehand if this may be causing the severe mood swings (I get very bad especially before my period). I know I should have asked my doctor all of this, but we were pretty rushed and I will have to wait until my next appointment.

    Thank you ladies

Have you tried any types of medication made specifically for depression before? I'd be asking the doctor about those - possibly Paxil.
    Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

all i can say is i tried depression meds for a long time....they did "ok" but not great. then i got on the pill and omg it was like a new day. until then i had never thought that hormones could be what was causing the depression.

God, if anyone knows what ur goin through, its ME!!!! Thyroid disease mimics depression.. I read that online, and a lot of times people are treated for depression when its actually youre thyroid.... I still have episodes periodically.. when Im eating a lot of "junk" or NOT taking my meds properly..I was diagnosed when I was pregnant and its been pretty bad ever since.. I was told by my mom to get tested bc every female on my moms side has it...It took me almost a YEAR to get my levels correct.. I am up to 100 mcgs of synthroid daily.. It will just take a while to get them stable....

Because I dont have insurance I am unable to reicieve further testing to see whats really going on. I am gettin married in a year so Ill deal with it then.. I digress..

Anyways, heres a few things to consider: You absolutely NEED to take your medicene first thing in the morning, with a FULL glass of water, and DO NOT eat for atleast an hour, so it can absorb into your system....

ALSO, watch your diet, you can look up thyroid diets online... AVOID sugar like the plague, softdrinks.. Eat a lot of RAW fruits n veggies... AND DRINK A LOT OF WATER!!!!

I find that getting some sun, laying out (vitamin D), helps me a LOT!!!

ALSO, be an advocate for your health.. SO many doctors misdiagnos depression and thyroid disease and it bothers me

Good luck andhang in there!!! I know what youre going through and its HORRIBLE, as I have experienced it this past year

Thank you guys for all your replies! I did try meds at one point, but as GrlWithTheMost said, neurotransmitter imbalance was not what was causing it, it was the thyriod...
GrlWithTheMost, thank you so much for this post-I agree that thyroid disease is sooooo often misdiagnosed, and people are put on antidepressants instead of being treated for the real problem. When I discovered I was hypothyroid and started taking Armour it was such a complete transformation I couldn't fucking believe it. I remember thinking "So this is what normal people feel like-this is awesome!"
I am going to pay attention to what I eat-I am always superhealthy, however, when I get depressed I eat like shit...

nicole84, that is awesome that getting on the pill made such a difference-that gives me hope that maybe it's these messed up progesterone levels that are still wreaking havoc. I think p. also influences thyroid function a lot, so that would make sense.

Thank you guys again, I get so panicked when I realize the depression is coming back, and it's really great to have people to talk too.

I am the same way.. Esp when I am PMSING.. I go on EXTREME sugar binges.. coke, lots of chocolate.. just greasy fat food.. and end up feeling WORST

Sorry I couldnt answer anything about the progesterone levels, kinda foreign to me.. but like I said I KNOW exactly what you are going through.. Ive called suicide hotlines multiple times, not out of fear I would do it, just because I felt totally helpless, didnt want to get out of bed, felt like I was out of options.. I have my levels tested every 3 months, and it seems FINALLY after a year they are finally starting to become stable

I am glad your levels are stabilizing-what a horrible place to be. And I think unless you have felt that absolute hopelessness you can't know what it feels like...I have tried explaining so many times. And it's so freaky that something physical like thyroid issues/hormone imbalances can make you feel so extreme, even when nothing is wrong with your life.
My heart goes out to everyone who has ever suffered/is suffering from depression. It's a bitch. I hope you keep feeling well, it's great that you monitor your levels, that is so important.

GrlWithTheMost, do you notice any difference in your mood the next day when you drink? I don't drink a whole lot of alcohol, but it seems that when I do I feel horrible the next day. I know alcohol is a depressant, so I guess that makes sense, but this only happens every once in a while. So I am unsure as to whether this is related to alcohol...gah! So many things to consider...

Since you mention Vitamin D-I had my levels tested and they were practically non-existent (thank you Portland). And I got a juicer so I could get as many veggies as possible. It's pretty cool, I even juice green peppers and zucchini, it's awesome

Personally, Im "dr. jekyl, mr hyde" with alcohol. Sometimes I can be a fun drunk, but a lot of the time Im a mean, obnoxious drunk.. I dont NEED alcohol to get through the day, but the fact that I get pretty unstable on it, I believe Im borderline alcoholic...

If I get wasted, I usually hate life the next day, and it gives me the shits, sorry so graphic, lol... But other than that I dont find it affects my moods, personally...

Its so funny.. I was talking to one of my aunts this weekend @ a family gathering. She was diagnosed with thyroid disease along with all of my moms other sisters. She says you know "my 20s werent the hardest times of my life so far, raising 2 babies and working fulltime"... "Probably the WORST time in my life was in my 30s, when I was trying to balance my thyroid harmones" ... And we just all sat and talked about how dreadful, hopeless, and depressing life is @ that time in your life.. She is 42 now and FINALLy has stabalized her harmones and doing fine thank god.. Sorry I digress again, lol...

The last week Ive been feeling pretty funky, because Ive been on my period I suppose.. Im on seasonique LO, so that I only have my period every 3 months.. I find that helps too, not being overly harmonal ALL the time, esp with the thyroid issues.

I recently got progesterone injection for birth control and I have never been so depressed in my life. Hormones are so serious.
