Well the bill states that a DL is a valid proof of citizenship, so I hate to break it to you but easy to forge or not, their valid. And so are state IDs.

And I know they're easy to forge. That doesn't prevent them from being valid proof. I don't make the laws. I agree that it's a huge flaw, with many other points in this bill.

Again, false. Legal aliens HAVE to carry alien identification cards with them at all times.

Arizona driver's licenses are proof of citizenship. But when traveling, it's always a good idea to bring sufficient documentation with you. Choose from: a passport, a voter's registration card, a U.S. Military card, a Social Security Account Number card, or a U.S. Citizen ID Card (Form I-197). It's not that difficult or inconvenient.

My apologies, i meant to say US citizens, many of whom happen to look quite mexican, are not required to carry ID.

Again, I fail to see the problem. If it's normal to ask for ID when stopped in a car, why is it not OK during a legitamate stop outside of a car?

And Trem, I am not as informed as Nikka is, as I admit. Yet you don't comment on her very informed post. Why not? I'm interested in your thoughts on that.

Because citizens of the united states are not legally required to carry ID at all times. If you want that to change that is a different debate, but as long as only brown people need to carry ID while everyone else doesn't have too it will remain a racist law.

Btw, I happen to agree with the idea of always carrying proof. I am a white middle class female who was born here and I ALWAYS carry my drivers license. I have been stopp several times, including random stops. If someone wants sympathy for illegals, you won't get it from me. I have seen how they are bankrupting states and they don't need to be here.

A driver's license isn't considered proof of citizenship.

I read about an American (of Mexican heritage) truck driver who was arrested and taken to the police station, even though he had a valid license, and was forced to call his wife to bring his birth certificate to the police station before they would release him.

It does. Plenty of times I have gone through check points and had to show ID. Get money from a bank? Got to show ID. Look a certain age and buying alcohol? Got to show an ID. Going into a bar frequented by young people - got to show an ID. And finally if I get pulled over by the cops? Got to show an ID. It is simply hysteria.

Unfortunately for him, this was the doing of federal agents, not AZ agents. The federal law is far less lax in identification requirements than the AZ law. It's a shame this happened to a citizen.

It is for the AZ law enforced by AZ authorities.

A person is presumed to not be an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States if the person provides to the law enforcement officer or agency any of the following: 1. A valid Arizona driver license.
    2. A valid Arizona nonoperating identification license.
    3. A valid tribal enrollment card or other form of tribal identification.
    4. If the entity requires proof of legal presence in the United States before issuance, any valid United States federal, state or local government issued identification.

    11-1051 Article 8 Section B (1)

Federal agents enforcing federal law probably requires more documentation.

My Mexican (wouldn't say friend--but acquaintance) is illegal and has a drivers license. Has been stopped numerous times and was let go. I have even called the police on him once and TOLD them he is illegal...still, he's here, years later.
So a drivers license, is proof of citizenship, even though its not valid. Who knows if its forged or not though, he told me his SSN is fake.

You can get a fake SSN?!?! I was in the States illegally for a year and it was really difficult for me to sidestep the law and stay off the radar - no idea how a person could build their lives not being a legal resident.

I did manage to get a drivers license though - the DMV can be lazy. You just tell them you accidentally this or that document at home, and you've got yourself a license!

I'm back in Canada now, for anyone who's worried I'm a drain on their system....

Yeah apparently so. He's an idiot. I tried to have him deported, but they don't seem to care.UGH Oh well. I guess until he's gone, I'll keep getting his money. Hell, he owes it to me, a hard working American citizen.

Might wanna stay away from those tanning beds too.
The way the law is written, it doesn't allow cops to just stop random people on the street. It's written so that if a cop stops someone for something else (traffic ticket, for example), and the person gives obvious warning signs that they might be illegal, that the cop can ask them for documentation. The police are receiving training on how to do this.

They can't just stop a mexican-looking guy on the street for no reason and say "papers please."

I fully support this law. And I am all for legal immigration. I don't blame Mexicans for wanting to come here, but we are a nation of laws. If you want to come here, follow them.

    BULLSHIT.

I HATE HATE FUCKING HHHAAATTEE when people throw the word "racism" around like you just did.

Millions upon millions of people are in our country illegally. 99% of them are mexicans (or somewhere close to that). It is a problem that must be dealt with. Arizona is doing something to stem the tide because the federal government is doing NOTHING. There is nothing NOTHING wrong with this.

If Arizona police pull a car over and the person inside has a slavic accent, and the cop asks to see his visa or other proof that he's here legally, and he doesn't have it...guess what? He'll go to jail. Is that racist? NO.

So why is it racist when you sub in a mexican person for slavic? Because people like you want to be "sensitive."

I'll tell you what...I'll gladly carry a small, photocopied version of my birth certificate in my wallet. Stop your bullshit race-baiting and give real solutions to millions of people breaking the law when they come in to the US.

Uh of course its fucking racist, it doesn't matter what race the person is whether it be mexican or slavic or russian or fucking chinese. As long as only certain people have to prove they are legal then IT IS A RACIST LAW. You carry your birth certificate if you want too, i guarantee you 99% of the other racist fucks who want all brown people to be carded will disagree with you.

I agree with you. I HATE when people say we must be racist because we are against illegals. If that was the case, why are many in the Minuteman Militia of Mexican descent? Racism means against someone because of their race. I am against anyone breaking laws, white, black, Hispanic, other groups. I am against illegals who come here for criminal reasons, or to get handouts.

Btw here's a video that all of those for illegals need to watch: It's talking about these women who have babies here for free and cross over the border just in time to have babies. Disgusting. I am waiting a few years to have babies so I can afford them, yet these leeches get free healthcare.

YOU ARE MISSING THE FUCKING POINT. It doesn't matter when they ask for papers, they are not going to ask white people for EVER. But but but they must be stopped for other crimes first!!! who gives a flying fuck? you are making the law different for people based on their race, this isn't the fucking 60s anymore. There are no god damn "obvious warning signs that they might be illegal" that are not based on race, NONE.

It is not racist because its against illegals it is racist because IT TREATS PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT RACES DIFFERENTLY. Is that fucking clear yet? Ask EVERYONE for papers = not racist, ask brown people for papers = racist. It is not a fucking hard concept to understand.

Where did I say I had no problems with racism? That's a lie. Yes, I have a problem with ILLEGALS. I don't care what country they are from. I do not want ILLEGALS here. I do not want them leeching off the system, taking money from my future kids (who will be citizens), I do not want them selling drugs. I do not want ILLEGALS here. ONCE AGAIN, I DO NOT CARE WHAT RACE THEY ARE, THEY ARE ILLEGAL!
