Default How to prove my employment?

I usually don't like to describe the nature of my work. After five wonderful years in the adult film industry I switched to webcam and now I've dabbled into escorting. I haven't webcammed in awhile and I'm currently seeking steady income with the right company for that right now. As for escorting, I've only been doing that and so far, its been very successful. But I don't want to do that for long at all. I've been doing it since January 2010 and will continue till the end of the year.

Come 2011, I want to only do webcamming and also get a non adult, financially secure job with medical benefits. Maybe use my brain more often. lol. But I have nothing to put on my resume. I did go to college but I haven't had real job experience in forever. I have money saved up and I am financially comfortable right now but I will want to switch careers sometime in the future. What should I go about saying on my resume for employment and usually they ask for employer contact information which I'd prefer not to give. It's not only employers, but banks, loan officers, renters, and many other businesses will need to know my employer information. I've been denied certain things such as apartments because I always say I model but I'm an independent contractor and don't have an employer's phone number.

I also don't have a bank account. I prefer having just cash saved up and I spend a lot less money when I hold onto cash. But I have bad credit from falling for a scam 7 years ago and had to pay the bank back. I paid it back, but I'm still flagged from all banks in the US. I need to restore my credit before I can get a bank account but everything I do is prepaid now.

So what does everyone do to prove employment and do you just say you're a model? When I was apartment shopping, a couple renters would immediately decide not to rent to me as soon as I told them I model and even though I told him how much I make a year and even volunteered to pay 3 months advance in rent, he was uncomfortable renting to a model or performer because it wasn't secure enough. Anyone have ideas what to put down on applications and resumes?

^^^ based on what you have stated, there is really only one 'documented' form of employment that can be verified by a potential 'straight job' employer - your webcam work. Next february your webcam host will be issuing you an IRS 1099-misc form for the total amount of 2010 payments sent to you by your web host. This income is verifiable for a prospective 'straight job' employer via the IRS.

As you are discovering, one 'painful' consequence of the subprime mortgage debacle has been that banks / landlords / loan companies / credit card companies etc. are no longer allowed ( by their regulators / auditors ) to accept at face value the ability of prospective 'customers' to make payments just because that prospective 'customer' has STATED that their income is X dollars per month. They now need to see documented proof of that income. Obviously the most common way to do so is to request paycheck stubs from a 'straight job' employer. Absent a regular paycheck situation, i.e. with self-employed persons, with contractors, etc. they want to see some other 'authoritative' documentation of actual income by a third party. This means copies of prior year tax returns, this means bank statements showing regular bank account deposits, this means 1099 forms reflecting contractor payments etc. Self-generated financial documentation without backup from bank statements or tax documents is now essentially worthless, since it could very well be just an example of 'creative writing'.

I have no idea whether or not this next point applies or not, but it is a related fact. Any income that is not deposited in a bank account, that is not reported to the IRS, or does not have some form of 'paper trail', simply does not exist in the eyes of prospective lenders / landlords. Thus even if someone was to walk into an apartment manager's office or car dealer with say $10,000 in cash, the apartment manager or car dealer could not move forward with a lease or loan involving a greater amount. They could accept the cash as payment in full ( i.e. a year's apartment rental or a second-hand car purchase). But in doing so, they would also be required to issue a cash transaction report document to the IRS !
