This may sound dumb, but I'm watching this show, Forever Knight. Its about an 800 year old vampire who lives in Toronto working as a cop.

Through this show, I have gleaned slice-of-life glimpses into Canada. But I want to know what life is really like. Sex industry? Crime rate? Recession? Strip club regulations? Drug control laws? Where is the best place to live? Anything else you can supply is most welcome.

I could tell you...but then I'd have to shoot you. We keep it quiet to avoid all the riff raff coming and wrecking a good thing.

    Have you ever visited Canada?

Each one of those facets could be a page long response in itself. I have dual citizenship and choose to live in Canada (Toronto) instead of the states, but constantly debate whether I should be here or not. Even though Canada is right next to the States, and everyone assumes it is roughly equivalent, it is not, and is most definitely another country entirely in more than just the geographical sense.

You have to keep in mind, many provinces are easily the size of several states. It varies a fair bit depending on where you live, south or north, and what province. It would be like trying to sum up all of the states, New York is very different from Texas. Strip club regulations also vary by both province and city. Where I am you need to get a police clearance and apply for an adult entertainment licence in order to work. Other places you need to sign with an agency.

The main difference in terms of strip clubs that I can tell from reading posts is that the US has a culture of stage tipping. We have no 1 or 2 dollar bills here, and stage tipping barely exists. I get tipped on stage maybe once for every ten stage shows, and guys actually climb on stage and lay down when they tip. Also, I've never heard of a bikini or topless club around here, they are all full nude and with alcohol. But I can't speak for other areas. I am in Ontario.

I personally really want to try dancing in the US, but am nervous about picking a place to go.

ok as a Tdot (slang for Toronto) person with a few minutes on her hands I will tell you about life here.

I have lived back and forth between Toronto and San Francisco and a few other places in my 24 years on this earth. But in Total about 13 years in TO.

Prostitution is not illegal here. However that said many of the acts surrounding prostitution are. For example it is illegal to "run a common bawdy house" i.e. a Brothel. It is also illegal to be "found in a common bawdy house". "Living off the avails of prostitution" is also a crime, that is living off the money made by a prostitute. So for example if you are a prostitute and say have a hubby, and say you contribute to the household bills then your hubby is considered "living off the avails of prostitution". I used to work as a prostitute myself and am currently active in the interest of decriminalizing crimes that surround prostitution.

Stripping: well Toronto is not exactly "clean dancer friendly". You must be licensed ($400) to work in TO. I don't work in Toronto at all for various reasons. Lots of 2 way contact and "extras" galore! Hardly any busts by cops. The police tend to pick on the "massage parlours" the most. And personally I feel this is because there tends to be more violence in these places. Too many robberies/shootings/stabbings in the massage parlours. I used to work in one of these massage parlours. It is $400 for the license and totally not worth it. A week after I was fired there was a shooting at the parlour I worked at. There was 3 girls working there and they all got robbed and one got shot in the stomache. I thanked my lucky stars I was fired a week prior!

But in general there is not a whole lot of crime in Toronto. I live in what we call the GTA (general toronto area), which is the suburbs. But I have lived downtown and pretty much all over TO.

There are a lot of good places to eat, very much cultural. The only other place in North America that comes to mind that can compete with Toronto's multi-cultural food is NYC. And I have been to about 12 states and lived in 2 states... nothing compares. I was in Houston for about 3 months in 2005. When people called the food there multicultural I thought to myself "nah this can never even come close to Toronto". In fact one can get fat eating all the good food in Toronto (every time I gain weight I happen to be living in Toronto's downtown core).

Job wise, it is so-so. Where I live there are many people without jobs. But I do live in a blue collar suburb. The other side of the GTA (Brampton. mississauga/oakville) seems to have plenty of rich people and good jobs. Downtown Toronto tends to have lots of yuppies/suits. Where I live there is a car plant and it is like Detroit. That said people out here have not shied away from spending money at the SC. The only SC out here is very busy.

LOL....My thoughts exactly! I worked freelance for a Canadian business corporation for a couple of years in the '80's and I visited Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottowa and Quebec City a number of times each.

There was much I still didn't get to see, but I loved the country, the people and the culture. Canada is a very chilled and cosmopolitan place, and if I was ever asked to go back, I'd jump at the chance. That's not something I would do for many countries I can tell you.

This points out a lot of important info that gets ignored in our history/geography classes here in the USA (where we admittedly have an ego-centric view of the world). They aren't just our closest alli and neighbor but are our biggest trade partner and share a border and a lifestyle.

the 'gold foil hat' crowd would tell you that Canadians are Americans ... and descendents of Americans ... who have a penchant for making 'wrong' decisions but the wealth to escape the consequences !

They copulate once a year when the maple sap flows, seeking a mate their cries end in "eh". If seen in the wild not camoflaged with "denim" or "flannel" their hides are distinguished by the pearl whiteness that becomes an intense fall maple leaf red later in the day. Curiously they can be easily gathered into groups for "a pint" or some "cheese curds", though likely bacon fat flaoring anything may appeal to their curiosity for a taste. If you encounter one smile, engage in eye contact, and avoid words like "51st State" or "your British?", and " got a green card". Quite friendly though not well suited to warmer climate, so if you choose to adopt central A/C may be necessary.

Eh...there's extras everywhere. You're capable of working within your boundaries. And, it is a cool city.
