Has anyone ever tried absinthe? Unfortunately, here in bumfucking America its illegal. I think this question is mostly aimed at our SWers in Europe.

Yep, in Canada. I really liked it. I only had a few shots though. Took the buzz I already had going to a different, and pleasantly warm and aware level. I know that sounds weird, to be aware and drunk at the same time. It actually tastes good, too. They prepared it with the sugar cube trick.

I have tried the stuff they ship over here. It's a little like Jagermeister in taste, although it's been several years since I've tried it and the American stuff isn't very authentic.
I don't believe it's illegal anymore here, it's just that you can't get the good stuff here. It either contains no or very little wormwood.

actually certain brands of Absinthe are now legal in the US. The criteria for legal US sale is a Thujone content of 10mg/l or less. Several brands including Lucid, Kubler, St. Georges etc. can now be found at your local liquor store. However, according to the 'green fairy' officionados, absinthe doesn't have much of a 'green fairy' effect with Thujone concentrations this low.
Technically, it is also 100% legal for Americans to possess Absinthe with higher Thujone concentrations ... it's just illegal for US liquor distillers to produce them and for US liquor retailers to sell them. Thus several offshore absinthe specialty websites have sprung up who are very willing to sell online and deliver to your US doorstep.
Personally, Absinthe and I have a 'curious' relationship. I was introduced to it in Europe many years ago ( during a 'lost summer' on Ibiza ), and I developed a true 'love' for certain brands ( the higher the Thujone content the better LOL !).
When I was still living in New York I used to order European Absinthe brands on a fairly regular basis via . However, these days there are many other websites selling absinthe online for export into the US.
one of my favorite brands of Absinthe that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is Swiss La Bleue Clandestine. The Swiss actually invented absinthe, and since relegalization Swiss distilleries really put out a quality product. Also, even though absinthe was outlawed in Europe for many years, the Swiss distillers never really got out of practice LOL ( thus the 'clandestine' ).
Also, check out which has a lot of Absinthe info

Thanks for the info everyone! I was watching the History channel. It was a program on distilleries.

I think Harleigh's comment about it tasting like Jagermeister was pretty spot on. Jager mixed with licorice, and it really made my teeth burn for some reason when I took a shot of it. My whole gum line started burning. I was driving everyone that night so I only had the one shot though, so I can't attest to its effects. It was also some legal brand that I doubt had very much of the thujone stuff Melonie mentioned.

I've only tried two types of Absinthe, one I got imported, was nice (if you like aniseed), not sure what the thujone content was. The other I had when I was in Prague, King of Spirits Gold, delicious, highest thujone content you can get. Unfortunately also very expensive, only had enough money on me for 2 shots, never hallucinated but did get a very nice buzz from it.
Stay away from the bright green cheap stuff, the higher quality ones tend to be really light green in colour.
8 years ago I tried the "illegal kind" and it was such a fun buzz.

I tried like, 1/4 shot of the illegal stuff once. Numbed my mouth and tasted like eucalyptus.
Made me feel burning hot within a matter of seconds, too.

In Boulder, CO we've had multiple absinthe bars:

This may no longer be true, but years ago I had a professor at an alternative college that made authentic absinthe - home brewed. She had managed to get a hold of some European wormwood to make it, which importing into the US at the time was illegal. According to her American wormwood didn't contain the right properties to make authentic absinthe. Anyhow, she would brew two or three vats of it at a time in these huge glass containers, but I believe each container had to "brew" for at lease a year and as the herbs became soaked they'd condense down, so she'd have to keep filling up the containers with more herbs. It was actually very interesting to see. She poured out a glass one time and served it properly so we could all see how the sugar cube pearlized it... which at the time was pretty interesting.
Note to Athena: Just another reason to check out Boulder!

Yes, I've had it in Europe, a few times, can't really remember which country I had it in, haha. Maybe I even had it here...illegally imported. Why can't I remember, hehe. Anyway, its just booze, gets you pretty drunk and happy, but nothing special. Lot of hype.
There is a similar tasting french liquor called Chartreuse, which is legal here.
