Ugh I hate HATE this too. It's impossible to concentrate and work hard when sleazeballs act like we're at work and they're entitled to drool, stare, make lame attempts at pick up lines.
Anyways!
I started getting this fitness magazine, Oxygen, for women and I read that for motivation. I also made it a pseudo-hobby to research fitness and clean eating, with the eventual goal to apply what I've learned towards competing in a bikini-fitness competition. It really helps to have a goal you'd be ecstatic to complete due to sticking with your gym routine.
Plus, cliche as it may be - even if I don't want to work out, I ALWAYS have more energy and feel better when I leave the gym than when I went in.

OMG I so know what you are talking about.
One gym I was a member of (Nu bodies in peterborough ON) was filled with tons of female body builders. Not too many gawking guys, but the seriously ripped women in the change room talking about steroid regimens...
Another one I was a member of (flirty girl in Toronto) was somewhat similar. Not really the body builder types there but all about the "hottie bodies" I am better then you type of crap.
Its why I tend to stick to smaller gyms or the YMCA.

A way I get myself to go to the gym is I think about how much more money I'm gonna make that night if I go LOL..... I put all my energizing hip hop and techno songs onto my ipod and blast it (great for my ears ughh) and just go and do it. It helps me get pumped up for the night, too. Sometimes I almost accidently dance or move seductively to the music cuz I mean that's what I do all the time at shows haha but I have to refrain

Well, my motivation is money. And the fact that my trainer literally knows whenever I skip a gym trip...but you knew that already. Haha.

Have you tried wearing a loose sweatsuit that covers your whole body? Are there any all-women's health clubs near you, like Curves?

I seriously hate going to the gym. The combination of creepy dudes and competitive women made it all to wierd. Well, that and the grossness of germs in all the shared equipment. Because I work a ton, getting there and back was taking too much time away from my day and my workout. So, I am the workout DVD queen. Weights, cardio, stretching, yoga, pilates. So many DVD's I never get bored.
When I need serious motivation, here is my tip. Eat a cupcake (or whatever "bad" food you're trying to stay away from) in front of a full length mirror. Naked. When it's really bad, I work out in my sports bra and panties. When I can see ALL my flaws, I work out extra hard. Can't do that at the gym.
Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.
Like others have mentioned, join the YMCA instead of the big name chain gyms. It's a family environment so you will only get a nice passing glance instead of the full on eye-rape that goes on at the big gyms.
For motivation, train your mind that going to the gym is not up for debate. Train yourself to beleive it is something that the body most naturally do, such as sleeping or going to the restroom. Every time you have the thought "crap, I REALLY don't feel like working out today" Stomp out that thought and instantly start to think "no, this must be done, I have to go". You would never think "Crap, I REALLY don't feel like sleeping today" Make that same mental connection with it. I know that sounds kinda lame but it works, once you train yourself that there is NO other choice, and it must be done, it changes everything. And when you think about it, working out is something that we ALL MUST DO. Guy or girl, young or old, unless you have a disability that prevents it, we all must work out. The human body is a machine and working out is maintenance, pure and simple. The alternative is going to the doctor/chiropractor practically every other day when we all start tagging our 40's & 50's with all the aches, pains, & health complications that comes with letting yourself go. That thought is what changed everything for me and got me back into the gym.
Also, get a good Ipod/MP3 player with really comfortable headphones/earbuds and CRANK IT. I simply cannot work out unless I have music blasting to drown out the lame-ass crap music that most gyms are playing and it also has an awesome psychological effect of letting you get lost in your own world.
im surprised you ladies have to motivate yourself so much to go, I am absolutely ADDICTED to working out, once you start to see and feel the results from working out, it just makes you have a feeling of, I need to go workout, I can't slack now.. well for me anyways, its amazing, I say just go, you're doing it for you and nobody else, who cares what they think, you've definitely got nothing to lose!
Go with a guy friend, and work out together. And when your membership expires, don't renew at Extreme or Goodlife---their locations are basically douche magnets.
@AngelKing goodlife, really? I go to one, IMO I love it.. than again, my goodlife has a separate room for the ladies, and the main room is huge, and is meant for everyone
I love small gyms. I can't stand places like LA fitness or Golds because it's just so superficial. I love working out. I want to get to the gym, do my routine, and go. I don't want to have to put on makeup just to go get sweaty.
There are a lot of body builders at my gym, but none of them are snobby. There are also some old people and people who are getting back into shape. I've never seen more than 10 people in the gym at a time too.
I'm procrastinating going to the gym today though. It's not that I don't want to work out (I do), it's just that I don't want to get dressed. :-) I'm totally having a naked day.
a work-out partner works for most. Try to go during a time it less busy so you don't have to worry about people. Maybe you can try another gym where you feel more comfortable.
