Default do you have to be skinny to do pole work?

I know this question is kinda silly, but I am a little "thicker" and losing weight at the moment, but I am pretty heavy and muscular and I feel like doing pole moves looks silly when you're not reasonably skinny. I saw a pretty big chick doing pole moves and it made me wanna barf (no offense to anyone, I'm a little bigger myself). I'm also scared of learning and feel like it would be a lot easier if I was just 20 pounds lighter. Mind you, I work out regularly and am somewhat in shape, so it's not about that... what are your personal views and experiences?

I'm asking because I feel really boring on stage just dancing and my club is the kinda club where you can actually still make money from pole tricks on stage and I just really wanna learn..

Short answer? No. You don't have to be skinny. What you need is upper body strength.

^ What she said. We had a thick, no .. downright overweight woman audition at our club. She climbed right to the top. She had muscle under all that fat.

lol guys.. yeah I mean I've seen a big girl do tricks too. I just personally don't find it "aesthetically pleasing" to look at and kinda don't wanna fall under the same category even though I am far from fat, just muscular and build big, and look very big compared to all the short girls in my club..

Yeah... I've seen some big girls do some cool tricks...
As far as "aesthetically pleasing"... more 'solid' looking big girls can still look pretty good doing tricks... but when your hair, your boobs, and your stomach all hang upside down when you to... it sort of distracts from the trick... :X
    Just my 2 cents.

You do not have to be skinny. Just be entertaining. ^_^ Performance has nothing to do with your size or shape, its all about your presentation!

I am mostly thin and have a few decent tricks under my belt that look fine but when I watch myself invert using a shoulder mount in the mirror and my tummy wrinkles up it's horrifying... just look at yourself in the mirror and decide what's flattering and what isn't.

thanks guys, I just have a hard time learning tricks too and I've been trying. I thought it had to do with how heavy I am, even though I have good overall strength, legs arms and all that. Nothing jiggles though so I should be alright lol

I knew a girl who was over 200 lbs and carried it VERY well back home that was an absolute acrobat and fun to watch!

Depending on how big the girl is, and how 'jiggly' you are, it would look bad to do pole tricks. I'm not talking about 'thicker' girls. If a girl is downright fat then I agree it looks VERY bad, no matter how cool the trick is. You don't have to be skinny, but big girls just end up looking like a rostisiree (I can't spell it dammit) chicken up there. Pole tricks look best from smaller bodies.

Keep in mind how breasts look upside down too. Not so perky breast may not look good hanging upside down. I wish more girls realized that. I keep my top on because my implants look wierd upside down.

I have always been on the muscular side and have always had great upper-body strength. I have not danced in a while so I have that extra 10 lbs. I didn't before (UGH) so my strength is not where I would like it to be right now...
I think one great way to test your strength is to go to a playground! I KNOW that sounds silly .....however just act like your a kid again, go on the monkey bars, horizontal bars, whatever they have and this alone will tell you where you are at with your strength. Some playgrounds do have "poles" but not for the same use as us dancers LOL. I have seen some great videos on youtube for pole dancing tutorials.

Confidence is the sexiest thing and it can't be stressed enough. A big girl thats hot and has skills and knows how amazing she is will look much sexier than a teeny weeny girl thats unsure of herself.

also remember it doesnt look all that great when girls as big as the pole do pole tricks either. of course, i am a bit biased as i am larger myself but i dont think the majority of "thick" or well built girls look bad doing pole tricks.

all you need is some major upper body strength.

I agree with this! I don't do pole tricks cause I'm not that talented but if I did I'd keep my top on too.

So after all these years...what I need is upper body strength that's like the one area when working out I avoid. I feel so silly...I've been dancing for 8 years and am scared of the pole...wish I could pick up some tricks before I quit.

As for the original poster...I agree with everyone else...I also think that thicker girls can sometimes look stronger and more athletic doing pole tricks that skinny girls. I think that looking strong and athletic can be just as sexy as looking petite and skinny. Go for it girl!

Nope I did all the same pole tricks at 160 pounds that I did at 120 pounds! And Ive seen wayyyy bigger girls do some impressive pole work. Its really all in the muscle you have...ive seen skinny girls that couldn't hold up themselves at all on the pole.

I've tried learning tricks but I just don't seem to get it. Also, I only wanna do it when no customers are there and that rarely happens. How did you guys learn?

Just climbed up there during slow times and learned. I get there early some days when I want to practice. It helps to do simple spins and climbing then learning more.

so do you just experiment? I mean I've obviously seen a million tricks but I'm not sure I know how to do them unless somebody taught me..

It's a mixture of experimenting and having someone show you or spot you. I like to have a spotter for upside down tricks.

I always practiced before the club opened. It was our free time and I would teach the other girls in the club how to do them because at one point at our club it got to where there was only two girls on the pole and of that two I was one of them. See if you get some off time before any clients come in. ^_^

Agree with CaseyLace - some tricks are very cool but make your body look a little odd. I would save them for building your strength up and practising in private!! I find that whenever I do moves that involve a lot of weight bearing on my thighs they show up my cottage cheese legs something chronic! Ick! Just work out which ones look good for your body ... spins are always good - if done with strength they can make anyone look graceful

Depends on 2 factors in my opinion 1 tone verses jiggle and how big is thick ?

I don't care if some1 is skinny if they jiggle when they wiggle or do certain moves it's not like we are dancing in hot outfits that can cover up the wave effect of moving jello. I say avoid drawing attention to this if and when ever possible if you are dancing naked cuz impressing the people w/ athletes and cool pole tricks might apeal to your coworkers, but in selling sexy not so much if it doesn't look sexy for your body to do so.

Now as for thick verses fat and this is just my opinion but if a dancer is big as in 3times bigger then g strings should even be made then doing pole tricks might not be an option they should consider as I have personally seen big girls take down poles they had no business getting up on cuz there is a weight factor in how much a pole can take being thrown around it.

Now if neither is an issue then I say all is good go for it. I learned some of my best tricks from big girls who worked it & knew how to make it look good for them.

lol uv69, it's funny that you mention it. I'm actually scared that the pole is gonna break or sth. It's not one of those thinner brass poles but a cheap, thicker pole. Even the skinny girls make it move suspiciously lol. But this is only at my home club. At other clubs for some reason the poles make me much less uncomfortable. I weigh a lot but nothing jiggles. I can't even make my ass shake cause it's so tight lol. I just personally find it much nicer to look at when the girl is super skinny
