    Default Family affecting your diet?

    Hey ladies -

This has been going on for a while in my house, so I wanted to see if anyone had any input/tips or had a similar situation: I live with my girlfriend and her daughter. My girlfriend can eat anything she wants and still look amazing, and obviously, so can her twelve-year-old. They both eat meat, and I am a strict vegetarian. We've managed to navigate around that, but it's my diet that is becoming a problem. I do all of the cooking, and I enjoy eating really healthy foods. I often juice, and put together raw meals composed of mostly veggies. But when I see my GF and her daughter eating a delicious looking pizza, or when I'm making some home made artichoke dip for my lady that looks amazing, I can't help but want to nibble. It is really hard to stick to my diet! Tonight I made them s'mores for dessert, and grilled myself a banana instead and sprinkled it with cinnamon, so that was not too bad, but it took almost all of my self control. Anyone also going through this? How do I stick to my diet without making my twelve-year-old drink spinach??

Oh gosh, that's rough. I found it hard as a teen trying to be healthy when my parents ate like crap, but being the adult makes it all the more harder, as you have to worry about appeasing kids. I actually don't have any stead-fast advice. Maybe you could try teaching the little girl how to cook healthier stuff, get her interested in all organic baking, etc. That way you can eat more of the same stuff?

    YES.

I'm usually vegan and I eat a high raw diet too, but moving back with my family has made me slip into some fucked up eating patterns again. (peanut butter. cereal. family outings at steakhouses where i order vegetarian garbage.)

I try and keep the house stocked with good stuff, but sometimes (finals week!) it has been really hard.

I hate that. I try to keep fresh cut veggies right in front in the fridge so if i open the fridge I will grab them instead of my daughter's leftover mac and cheese...

Also, thanks for the advice, 4ever. She is just so darn picky...

UGH. Yes. Doesn't matter how many times I scream at her not to, my mom turns up out of the fucking aether with chocolate like HEY I THOUGHT I'D BE REALLY NICE, ISN'T THIS NICE OF ME? EVERYONE LIKES CHOCOLATE. EAT IT ALL UP NOW SWEETIE. And I'm like ummm you know I have problems with food, so why would you do that?! Bleargh.

Just don't do what I do and throw all the bad food out of the house in a hysterical fit and stock up on baby corn and stuff. People don't like it when I do that. :C
Get the fuck off my harbl, yo'.

Ugh, picky eaters. Do you think she would be more receptive to new foods if she were able to help plan, shop and prepare them? Usually that will work with younger kids, 8 or 9, but 12 is almost a teenager. Maybe try and get her to look at it from more of a cosmetic angle? It'll help her out if she's prone to acne, keep her skin glowy and eyes bright etc. I suppose bribing with beauty isn't such a good idea at that young an age....

I am puzzled for you on this one....

or you can be sneaky. Substitute healthy ingredients in place of the bad ones. Make desserts with dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. Use organic peanut butter as opposed to that skippy crap they sell at the grocer.

Make desserts that are full of fruit (may I suggest a mango sorbet?).

While one can respect the choice to eat or not to eat meat, it should be a family choice to eat healthy as whole. I eat meat. That said my diet is 70% veg and fruit. I do a lot of juicing and smoothies. I am lactose intolerant so my smoothies are made with rice milk.

I like a good peanut butter and banana sandwich. That said I do it with whole grain bread and organic peanut butter (no sugar or perservatives)

Oh god. This is a huge problem for me. I live in BBQ country and everyone thinks 'healthy' is eating green beans slathered in bacon fat, salt, and grease. Or fried okra. So far I have succeeded only in eliminating red meat from my diet, which is a huuuuge feat.
