Question Stripper applying for sec 8 housing.. maybe?

Ok.. Im in a rough situation. Im a single mother, working, going to school, and constantly going to court against my daughters loser father. *The next 3 years of school will be taking up ALOT of my time to where I will not be able to have the time to work as much. Not only that, the money sucks now in the 1st place., compared to before this entire economy went down hill. So Im thinking of applying for "section 8" apartments. But I dont want to lie about my job because my babys father would LOVE to rat me out. And if they find out im lieing about my job title, me and my daughter can loose our health Ins. (Hes a looser like that.) Once I graduate I can finally move on. But at this point I feel trapped in the club unless I get some temporary help until I graduate. DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF THE SECTION 8 WILL REJECT ME -only because Im a DANCER!!!???. (my income is truly low .. because of my time spent in school, the economy and fitting in some special mommy time for my little 1) -- I do file my taxes every year.. But its not under "exotic dancer" It is under Spiritual healing/ entertainment. I also have a small tarot reading business.

My friend has a CASH business.. house cleaning. She gets "cash only" also. And she was excepted for Sec 8. Can they judge me or reject me because I "dance"??? Anybody know any laws in the Rhode Island area?? I need some legal advice. I called a lawyer 2day.. he didnt give me a straight answer.. Ug

state social services dept's are not going to hold it against you that you earn money as a 'stripper'. What they could hold against you is that you earn too much money to qualify ... on paper at least.

First issue is whether or not you have sole custody of your child / rights to claim your child as your dependent, or not. If you do, then the income threshold to automatically qualify for benefits will be ~$21,000 ( in RI it's 30% of the $72,500 state AMI). If you don't then the income threshold to qualify for benefits will be lower ( because you'll be categorized as a 1 person household instead of a 2 person family). Of course if your total income is only $300 a week = $16,000 per year then this is a non-issue

    - unless -

If there is an official ruling from some family court / divorce court etc. that directs the flaky father to pay you X dollars per week / month / year in child support, then the social services dep't may attempt to count this amount of child support payments as additional income against the benefit eligibility threshold regardless of whether or not you are actually receiving those X dollars.

    - unless -

If you are receiving grant money towards your college tuition, then the social services dep't may attempt to count the amount of grant money as additional income against the benefit eligibility threshold.

Thank you for your response! Im still afraid to tell them I dance. I have to sit and do some thinking. But YES, I DO have SOLE custody. Her father has supervised visits. I have a lot on my plate. I just really need this sec 8 so i can graduate........ If I tell them, I hope it doesnt fuck everything up. To be honest, they already excepted me.. Im just in the waiting period to get the apartment. I just want to be clear just in case my ex tries to rat me out and fuck up my future plan 4 my daughter and I. I feel the need to be on top of the game

^^^ well, the worries you have are actually a different topic ... i.e. whether or not a family court judge would choose to believe that a mother who has a documented work history as a 'stripper' would present a 'bad environment' to her child, as opposed to the child's father who may someday decide to hold down a 'straight' job and suddenly turn into a 'responsible parent'. I can't help you much there other than to report that in most 'liberal' states that family court judges seem to view single mothers who elect to work as 'strippers' as self-sacrificing and responsible parents. Obviously this is less likely to be the case the closer the state is to the 'bible belt', at which point some family courts are inclined to buy into the 'Hollywood Stereotype' that 'strippers' are all lying, thieving, drug addicted whores.

However, you are correct that anything you put down on a gov't benefits application does become part of the official public record ... and as such could re-emerge at an inopportune moment ( future family court proceeding, future 'straight' job employer background check etc). And since gov't benefits application info is almost certainly going to be shared / cross-checked with other federal and state agencies ( like the IRS and state income tax records ), you definitely don't want to make any statement on your benefits application that is 'inconsistent' with previous information that you have provided to those other federal and state agencies.

Do they specifically ask you what your occupation is on the form? Can you say Spiritual healing/ entertainment like you do on your tax form? Technically you are in entertainment. How specific do you need to be?

^^^ generally, every social services benefit applicant must undergo a face to face interview with a dep't of social services employee at some point ... which makes 'skating around' the specifics of income sources rather challenging.
