    Default Moving overseas.

    Hey guys!

Next year, we are totally GTFO. Both of us have had enough, and Europe is the next stop. I've been flirting with this list of cities, and I'm curious.. which one would you pursue if given the option?

I'd be happy to explain why I have a crush on any of these cities, plus the logistics behind why we chose them to look at.

Other than that, just for fun, vote for me.

    * hint hint - you may want to check into

    A. your likelihood of being allowed to 'permanantly reside' in these countries

    B. your ability to legally 'work' in these countries after you move there

    C. the effective tax rate that will be applied to your earnings if you ARE allowed to work

    D. the actual standard of living you're likely to achieve in these countries given tax rates and costs of living

if you're absolutely set on permanently relocating to a European country, you might actually want to look into Lichtenstein, Andorra, Poland etc. !

^^ Thanks Melonie. I'm out of stripping essentially and have been looking into these things. I wouldn't even care if we were poor-ish, I'm just ready to leave. I've thought about the idea of just moving husband back to Canada with me, but I'm really ready to be finished with moving and just move to our dream city already. Won't be for a year anyhow.

I have always been a bit Copenhagen obsessed, so I voted for that city.

I kind of think that you and I may be similar in that we land on our feet. So, go!

if i moved overseas (permanently) i dont think it would be to europe. if i was feeling a bit baller, maybe melbourne or sidney australia... but more likely it would be to somewhere in south america... specifically buenos aires or cordoba argentina. i was an exchange student in argentina (although a much smaller city) a while back and fell in love with the culture and i already know the language. although im not sure if argentina counts as overseas... but out of the country and out of the hemisphere at least.

but yea, id rather go somewhere where the money i had went further. i guess im a bit selfish. or maybe practical. and also, moving permanently to anywhere out of the country is a whole separate issue of practicality in itself.
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

I have lived in all of those cities. Helsinki I was ready to shoot myself after a few months. Very drunk and very depressing, especially in the winter. I just found the place to be shitty and without charm personally, but that could just be me.

Stockholm and Copenhagen are both beautiful but good luck finding a place to live, or finding under the table work. And I cannot stress to you how hard it is finding housing. Most housing in those cities is socialized and government controlled, and anything that is rented privately will be gone as soon as it is listed. I have lived all over the world, and I have never had a harder time finding housing than in Stockholm and Copenhagen. You could perhaps stay in a squat like Ungdomshuset on Jagtvej, but I don't even know if it's there anymore. Taxation there is also extremely strict, so you will only be able to find legit work. You could maybe try in Christiania, but again, I don't know if that's around or if it's still a legal grey zone the way it used to be.

Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities in the world. I lived there for 3 yrs, right in the middle of the Wallen (Red Light District). Housing is also not easy to find, and if you want to find something you will need to have some hookups, or be prepared to pay a lot of money, or live way outside the city. There is so much depth to this city beyond what people's initial perceptions of it might be, and the people there are absolutely amazing. I still visit the city regularly because of the friendships I made there. The weather sucks in a windy damp grey kinda way most of the year, but if you can live with that then you'd be fine. Under the table work is somewhat possible in coffee shops, but the city is changing fast in its attitudes towards its tourist demographic, so I don't know how easy even work like that would be to find in the future.

I would honestly suggest you don't make a definite decision to cut ties until you go and try living in one of your cities of choice for 6 months. If you have EU visa possibilities then you'll be good, but even though some of these cities look great on paper, in reality there's a lot of shit that doesn't appear between the lines, that you'd just have to see firsthand. Good luck.

^^ Thanks for the good advice. I've had lots of luck finding places in Amsterdam. Who knows, we have a friend in Berlin so maybe we'll end up there.

I have EU visa possibilities but am just now looking into them. Hopefully my husband will be able to score a job working on research chemicals, I definitely want to work legally.

We're going to likely do a 3 month trial run in the place we choose before we commit- so far looks like Amsterdam is the front runner.

Berlin is a beautiful city as well, but you'll probably both want to learn German if you don't speak it already. Good news about Berlin is it's really easy to find affordable housing, either for rent or for sale. And out of curiosity, where have you been finding places for rent in Amsterdam? There is a few scams out there, so you need to be a little cautious.

I have family in Berlin-nice city with tons of history. Sometimes I think a bit too much history. It'll be hard to find work unless you speak at least some German. Housing won't be too difficult, but it won't be a large place unless you have a lot of money. Then again, large is a relative term....

Have you definitely decided on Europe? In Japan, I understand there is a pretty big demand for English teachers from the US, if you're concerned about employment.

Ireland is beyond beautiful. Dublin and Galway are both incredible cities, and the little villages in the country are just perfect.

^i personally loved glasgow. i lived in france for about a year and my family is from finland so i'm pretty familiar with western/northern europe. yeah it is really depressing during the winter (considering you have pretty much no sunlight) and there are a lot of alcoholics (which is pretty common in most northern european countries) but there's a lot more to finland, even though it's a crazy small country. the people are very reserved especially to strangers, so they don't come off as the warmest people. of course i'm impartial to finland and helsinki is a fairly small city. and with pretty much all the cities you've listed, taxes are insanely high, since they're socialist democracies...however you don't see any poverty or lower classes, which is a good thing imo.

one of my good friends just moved to berlin (but she's german). i personally am not the biggest fan of berlin or germany in general (no offense).

I voted for Amsterdam, but I'd prefer somewhere a little more tropical. That was my choice from the Europe list though!

^^ Ah, see being from Eastern Canada myself, I don't care for the heat or any tropical place, neither does my husband. In a perfect world we'd move to Norway, but it's difficult. Taxes etc are also of no concern really in exchange for living somewhere ideal.

Amsterdam is the only one on the list I've been to but man I love that city! The Dutch are really friendly and very accepting of people, very much into freedom of choice there. Also, great sense of humour. I've heard it's pretty easy to get a visa there, met an Aussie guy there who basically just rented an apartment there went to the immigration office and told them and got a visa.

Also have to agree with Miss_McKenna about Edinburgh, lived there for a year, just fell in love with the place!

Well, first of all, I assume this means that you are a 'Commonwealth' citizen ... which similarly to girls from Australia and NZ means that you already have a direct path for 'official' immigration to the UK, Scotland, Ireland etc.

And second of all, I assume that your father was a Scottish citizen ... which as the child of a Scottish citizen could provide a straightforward path to legal citizenship from Scotland on top of the 'official' immigration provided by the Commonwealth connection.

Also, after making this 'intermediate stop' in a UK country, and with the UK being an outer member of the EU, this also provides you with a path towards being able to legally work and obtain 'legal' permanent resident status in other EU countries i.e. Holland, Germany, etc.

However, for US readers, I must point out that the US is not part of the UK Commonwealth. Thus this path to 'legal' permanent resident status and/or 'legal' work status in the UK or EU countries ( as well as other Commonwealth countries Australia and NZ and Canada ) is far more difficult. But the reverse is true as well i.e. it is very difficult for Canadian and other Commonwealth country / EU country girls to obtain 'legal' work status and.or 'legal' permanent resident status in the US.
