I have seen some girls get acrylic on their toes, mainly their big toes. I've found that getting it on my nails prevents chipping and the wear-off of polish. Actually, that's the main reason that I started getting acrylics - for the convenience since I was supposed to have my nails done at work. Maybe consider this for your big toe (I know, some people are weirded out about it), and carry your own bottle of polish with you to touch up after work?
Have you ever thought about wearing closed-toe shoes or socks at work? Closed toe could do the opposite, however, and chip your polish since your toes will be hitting your shoes all night, so keep this in mind.
Is your nail person putting too much polish on? If you pile too many layers on, they'll chip easier.
Find out what top coat that the salon uses and see if you can find a better one to bring in for them to use. I know that since you're paying them, you shouldn't have to do this, but some salons take the line of least resistance.
My toe polish usually starts chipping after 1.5-2 weeks. If your budget doesn't allow for a bi-weekly pedi since you're used to a monthly one, consider just going your usual month for the pedi where they do all of the other good stuff with your cuticles, etc...but then take off your old polish/apply new with topcoat between visits!
I thought I was the only one who did this! The lady I go to doesn't use acrylics, but she puts some sort of tip and/or gel on my big toe. Then every week she'll reinforce it with silks and stuff. I'll still bust them off or crack them sometimes, but at least they last much longer and protect my real toenail.
I tell the lady I go to not to remove calluses because I need them to protect me from blisters. She'll work on the back of my heel though because that gets dry and I don't get blisters there, obviously.
My key is to ask them to cut my nails as short as possible! Then I check them to make sure they are short enough. I have one dancer friend who cuts her nails at home before her pedicure because they will never go as short as she wants them to.

I have acrylics on my two big toes and that prevents damage. Gels are not as hard as acrylic and can break easily. I had an accident with my gel toenail (when I wore gels on my toes) colliding with the leg of my sofa and I ended up in the ER with a broken toe and the nail the overlay and my natural nail were both so badly damaged that the nail had to be removed by a podiatrist. Very Painful and I could not work for 6 weeks.
Acrylic keeps the polish but make sure you have a good base and top coat and you're good to go.
