    Default Men In Drag and other Wonderings...

    I was in Provincetown this weekend. "P Town" is a very 'alternative lifestyle' friendly place and a very popular vacation destination with the gay community. If you have never been there, it's got great food, window shopping, clubs, as well as great beaches and classic Cape Cod scenery.

    If you have never been to P Town, consider it for future vacations:

    Here's a slide show of pics taken, with many more being added:

    P Town Vacation

    A friend of mine owns a condo there, so we rented it for a few days. We went to one of the popular drag shows. Some dead on Tina Turner, Lady Ga Ga, and some not very good Janet Jackson, but I digress.

    It occurred to me, that throughout most cultures, regardless of current social norms, throughout history, men dressing as women for entertainment has always existed in one form or another.

    I wondered - midway through the show at around vodka and cranberry #6 - what papers must have been written on this social norm challenging behavior. Psychologists, et al must have a lot of material there.

    The crowed seemed a mix if gay and straight, at least that was my impression.

    I enjoyed the show, but have to admit I don't really "get it" when it comes to what people enjoy about seeing men in drag, but the entertainers and back up dancers were great dancers.

    PS. We purchased the tickets for the show from the guy in the pics wearing the red white and blue mini skirt. :-)

    What a cute little town. Interesting question too. Speaking in terms of chromosomes:
    Women = XX
    Men = XY

    So it seems to me that men would have more in common with women, than vice versa (common denominator of X), which is probably why we see more emulation of women by men, than women emulating men, although it does exist. (I haven't seen any statistics off hand of comparisons though). Hmmm... I wonder.

    Then if you add in the fact that many foods and plants contain phytoestrogens (soy, lavender, etc...). This could further affect hormone levels. These are just some theories off the top of my head.

    Preference wise? Well we do have prettier outfits :-)

    Now you have me wondering if there are basic foods and plants that contain the equivalent of phytoestrogens in testosterone form instead.

    Well it's clearly a popular form of entertainment across cultures, social norms, and time.

    its a performance of gender. seeing a man perform feminine sexuality? amusing for sure. in some way stripping is almost like it... we perform a hypersexualized version of female sexuality. except we obviously (hopefully) are women performing it, as opposed to men performing it.

    i used to do drag for a while back in the day. it was fun. but most of the 'drag kings' in my area were actually just overweight butch girls who threw on boys clothes (most already wore boys clothes) and lip sinced lazily to the latest top 40. pretty lame. there were a couple who developed more original portrayals of male sexuality though and they were fun to watch!
    The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
    customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
    me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
    customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

    That's cute logic.

    I'd be interesting to google "women posing as men" and "men posing as women" or something like that to get a feel for what the ratio might be, or if there's some other sort of correlation that we're not quite seeing. Maybe it has to do more with our society and what we put value into. /shrug

    Portland, Oregon, also referred to as "P-town", has a big alternative lifestyle presence. Whats with that?

    I'm really curious too. Maybe the statistics are fairly equal, but maybe since it's not as shocking for women role playing men, we just don't notice/celebrate it as much. We wear pants and business suits already, and no big deal. Put a man in a dress and it's stop and stare time. I think my favorite had to be on America's Next Top Model when Melrose did Donald Trump. She had his facial expressions down to a science.

    Part of me also wonders if we are speaking of role playing for the sole sake of entertainment for an audience, or if we would also be speaking about those who do it as part of their own sexual preferences (transvestite, gender play). Then I guess there are always crossovers who do it for both.

    I don't think anyone here indicated otherwise.

    I doubt it will upset anyone, but your response reads as if it were intended for people who had issues with such things. Of all the places on the 'net, I would think this one has people very accepting of others 'life choices.'

    Me, I don't care what you do as long as it involves consenting adults.

    Nope. Estrogenic compounds are very common in nature. None I'm aware of that are androgenic to any real degree. I recall estrogenic compounds in plants may confer some advantage to the plants, which is why they are so common, but I don't recall off hand what the advantage is.
