    Default Going blonde without bleach

My hair is naturally dark blonde (not really even blonde its just really dull)
I used to bleach it white blonde but it got so damaged and just ruined then I went brunnette and then I got highlight and now Ive got about 2 and a half inches of roots and since a couple inches of bleach damaged hair at the ends.. so my hair is a mess

Ideally I want to go back to blonde but not white blonde more different shades of blonde something like these

But could I do this without using bleach..or if I use dye would it just fade? Whats the healthiest possible way to go blonde and whats the upkeep like. I would go to the hairdresser to get it blonde but then Id like to do my roots myself but I dont know if that would be very difficult to do. Im going to get as much of my hair cut off as possible without it being too short to cover my extensions so I can get rid of the damage...

With everything your hair has already been through, don't try doing this at home. See a hairdresser; they will know the best route to take.

Yeah I would get a hairdresser to do it for me in the first place but I dont really want to pay to go to the salon everytime I need my roots doing

You may not have hair if you do it yourself; you've put it through a lot. If you don't pay a hairdresser, you may burn it off doing it yourself. A high lift tint wont make dyed brown hair even dark blonde; you'll be lucky if you get med/dark red. If you can't afford a hairdresser, stay brunette, or buy a good blonde wig.

go to a pro who knos what they r doing. the rule usually is if ur lightening some bleach is gonna have to do work, darker u can do a rinse that wont really damage ur hair.

If you are dark blonde / light brown then a pro should be able to string several high-lift shades of blonde through it and achieve something similar to that look. If I'm not mistaken though, in the 2nd pic she has highlights strung through (prob in the 1st pic too, but I can't tell with the lighting) it which would certainly be done with bleach.

I think I phrased what I was asking wrong, I am going to go to a proffesional to get it done and there is only damage for a few inches at the ends but Im planning on getting more than that cut off so it should be ok but thats what the bleach did to my hair so I really want to avoid it if i can. I just wondered if I could achieve a colour like that without using bleach... any time I have had blonde hair its been bleached so Ive never done it with a dye/high lift tint...do they fade? are they damaging? What colours would I ask to achieve the looks above (prefer the carmen electra colour)

And when I had it bleached it was ok at first but over time it became dryer and dryer and I just wondered can you have blonde hair without that happening?

And i was wondering if doing the roots myself would be a difficult job(i mean in the future after ive had my hair done proffesionally but obviously it will grow and il get roots) Could I just do my roots a medium blonde and every so often go to the salon to get highlights as I can only do weaved highlights on other people... I find it hard on myself?

Any time you go blonde, it's damage no matter how you do it, period. Bleach or high lift tint still both opens the cuticle and removes melanin. Makes no difference.

No, you cannot have highlights AND do the roots yourself. You will have to foil both the medium blonde color and the bleached highlights in. Otherwise you will have splotches of dye in your hair. And weaved highlights are really hard to do on yourself. I have tried.

Yes, blonde hair gets dry. You have to condition, condition, condition. Nothing changes the fact that you open the cuticle and remove the melanin. It's just damaged and dry. This is why many products use silicones to try to hide the damage.

Just so you know, I do have a license and do hair so I am not just spouting off random info. You really need to go pay someone to get the look that you after. If you don't do the highlights, then you could probably do it yourself.

    OK thanks
I know there will be damage as putting any sort of chemical on your hair is going to damage it but Im wondering what would be the best way to have the least ammount of damage as I see people with blonde/bleach blonde hair but it still looks healthy wheras before mine didnt and Im not going to have bleached highlights as Id rather have darker hair than use bleach I think...how much can high lift tint actually lift

I have had brown hair with highlights for quite a while before i started growing it out I always used to do my roots with brown myself and get blonde highlights by my hairdresser and it didnt go splotchy but is doing it with blonde colours a whole different story?

Some people's hair can withstand the damage and some can't. My mother has ridiculously fine hair and it damages mega-easy. I got this ultra thick, coarse hair from my dad and it can pretty much stand up to anything without much damage. Depends a LOT on your hair, imo. I also find that a lower Vol developer left on a little longer seems to do a little less damage than 40 Vol left on for less time, but then again that could be all in my head. lol I have to condition and baby the hell outta my hair no matter how I go blonde (I am very dark auburn with gold highlights naturally though, so ymmv).

I've found in a lot of cases... this is because they keep re-applying bleach to the ALREADY bleached area... it's already white! You don't need to re-bleach the parts that are already light! Just bleach the roots... blend into the VERY top of the hair you've already died... and if there are any discrepancies in color between the areas... a few minutes and a bottle of toner goes a long way.
    But that's bleaching...

As for what you're asking... you aren't likely to be able to maintain this look on your own unless you really know what you're doing.

Professional opinion... if you have color on your hair right now, no matter how old it is or how close it is to your natural color... you have to use lightener or color remover to lighten it. Color will not lift color, at least not reliably. Color can only lift natural hair color. So if you try to do a high lift blonde you may end up with blonde roots and dark ends.

What you can do, depending on the state of your hair, is lighten it to desired level then tone it. But this is best left to a professional. There is also highlights, depending on how they are done, you could get the desired effect. I personally don't like foil highlights as they are somewhat overdone, I prefer balayage or color blocking.

The best thing to do is go with a professional, because the texture and porosity of your hair is really a factor as far as what you can and can't do. Also, at a professional salon you can get high quality conditioning treatments done.

Anytime I've just put blonde hair dye on my virgin light brown hair, it just turned orangey, not blonde.

Pro's have access to less damaging bleaches and lighteners that will be easier on your hair.

Really?? This just shows how different hair can react. My natural is only a couple of steps from black...verrrry dark and high-lift color gets me to a dark blonde, albeit a little brassy (although I was told by one stylist that where my base is actually red/brown I'll lift a lot easier since red pigment is smaller or something or nother). Have you tried high-lift color, or are you just talking about a regular box of color?

Well, L'oreal has a new professional product out, (used in salon only) that is much easier on your hair, no amonia, it's an oil based technology http://www.inona-us.com
I know you're not in the us, but maybe there'd be some info for you
Try their Kerastace deep conditioner. Good luck! I hope the best for you, you went through a lot, I was super depressed after my hair got ruined, it's better now after my using the Kerastace.

If you do your own roots and then have your hairdresser do foils, then you are just double processing. Double processing is definitely damage. If you are trying to avoid damage, you don't double process. This is why you hi-lite/low-lite.

You also have to watch out because a lot of haridressers will try to do this because it is easier. I've had several try to use high lift color with an extra violet toner added then pure bleach for hightlights OVER the already lifted color. I pay a little more and have my highlights foiled in, then the color painted in around them. Harder on the stylist but really it takes about the same amount or less time since it processes at the same time, and is much less harsh on my hair.

I apprenticed under a guy that took shortcuts all the time. His work looked like crap. He used this horrid highlighting gun that left orange blotches all over people's hair. And he had SO MANY customers I don't get it. He was also super unprofessional.

Moral of the story... don't trust stylists that take shortcuts.

i got wild hair one day and decided to go blonde, and I regretted it. My virgin hair was RUINED and it wasn't even blonde, more like an orangie blonde.
I would stay brunette if I were you. Going blonde really does kill your hair, but if that seems worth it to you then go for it.
Just a suggestion though, always get it professionally done. Blonde is tricky and should be left to the professionals

Yup. Go to a well known professional salon that has good reviews. Find a friend who has awesome hair and see their stylist.

I took short cuts on girls I knew were never going to be able to tell. Or who didn't know how to take care of/style their hair and were going to have nappy messy unwashed hair anyway.

Ok yeah there's an exception. But he was just terrrrrible.

PS- why do people pay for their hair to be done by stylists when they won't do anything with it once they leave?

    ^^^I have NO FUCKING CLUE.
I swear to god there was this girl... with like... hair that was SO damaged... cut straight across the bottom would sit like TWO INCHES THICK. It felt like she'd NEVER used conditioner in her LIFE. Worse, yet, she cut her hair into a chin length BOB!

And she'd come in every three-four weeks, pay like $200 for cut/color (She wanted it dyed RED [or some varying red-brown combination])... then tip like $60... but then I'd see her around in town (small city)... and it was like she woke up (sometimes) washed it... then just left the house. And let her CRAZY hair do whatever.

I honestly think that she thought that just because she was paying someone to do her hair... that it meant it looked good no matter what. D:

My mom is one of those people. Despite having uber damaged, very thin static electricity prone hair, she refuses to do anything to it except cut it across the bottom, no layers, middle part. She doesn't curl it, straighten it, or use product. But she will pay 250 dollars for highlights. It's also ridiculously long/stringy and has no body.
