Default Tanning Beds 3x/year = Cancer Risk?

I tanned for about 7 yrs an average of 3x/week max time. During 1 of those years, I tanned about 4x/week for 1 hour (two 30 min sessions). I'm Korean and easily tan.

Do you think that if I tan every now and then now to even out my skin tone, that my risk of cancer will increase? I'm just really worried bc in the past, I didn't tan safely, and I heard that radiation damage is cumulative. I wish that I hadn't tanned that much in the past, bc I wouldn't worry as much about things now, but I can't undo that .

I wouldn't have a problem with sunless tanner so much if it didn't wear off in the pool and hot tub. I'm going on a cruise in late October and want to be able to enjoy the pool/hot tub/other water activities, but I still want to have some color (I'm splotchy without a tan and the tan can't be from REAL sun and I want color for formal night pics).

Using a tanning bed once, ever, increases your skin cancer risk.

Have you tried airbrush/spray tanning yet?

I currently use airbrush solution and I LOVE it. However, on an upcoming vaca, I want to be able to enjoy water activities without having what they call "lizard skin," when the sunless tanner comes off unevenly.

Gotcha. I don't know. There is Melanotan. Although I can't say I recommend it because A. I've never tried it, and B. I've heard that it gives people blotchy skin and some weird reactions (although some rave about it too), and C. needles ugh! Too risky for me (just airbrush and lotion for me).

This might sound kind of silly, but how much carotene do you get in your diet? I eat a lot of carrots and it does give me a little "boost." Not like a brownie or tangerine, but a little oomph.

Im sorry but i think you tanned... tooo much! The more you tan the higher risk. I would just stop tanning, or limit it 4-8 times a month at most

Yes i understand. I wouldnt do it myself no way.. Im too wary with tanning beds. But for the OP its best to lower it to that amount, or even lower.. I dont know anyone who tans that much! natural skin is always best

Too much tanning increases your risks for skin cancer. Tanning more than one every other week greatly increases this. Especially if you are doing it for an hour and you easily tan, you are kind of asking for it (not to be mean). Tanning should never be done more than 15 minutes in a tanning bed. And you are better off slowly doing it in natural light with some protection that helps you get colors but like I said, slowly. Also you may want to go to a dermatologist and get some testing done to make sure you are okay. Get all the information from your doctor. It seems you have done enough excessively in the past years. Better prepare for the future.

Okay, I used to tan 6 days a week, 15 or 20 minutes each day, for years! I don't anymore, but I understand where the OP is coming from. Honestly, I don't burn in the sun, I naturally have olive-ish skin, so my doctor told me that I am actually at a lower risk of skin cancer vs. someone who is naturally fair. I hope this can give you some peace of mind, because you can't undo the past.

I also second Melanotan II. I have not yet tried myself personally, but my roommate's boyfriend is using it right now and LOVES it! He is freckled and fair normally, but right now is he is a deep dark bronze! Not to mention, it looks completely natural unlike most self tanners. Make sure you order from a reputable source that does NOT cut it with Mannitol though, if you choose to go this route.

Where can you get Melanotan?? I'm naturally fair and freckled. It's SO HARD for me to tan.

I would still either way go see a dermatologist first. Pays to be safe in the long run.

There are websites where you can order it. I will ask him later today and find out for you. It is a shot you have to give yourself every morning, and I guess it makes your body produce melatonin. He hasn't had any side effects so far besides mild nausea in the beginning.

Yes, that's why I'm asking if 3x in a year would be too much...meaning less than 4 - 8 times in a month

I did when I found a new mole. He said the new mole was fine, but I was really paranoid, so I had him remove it. I also got a full body scan, and he said that I was fine. It was odd, though, bc the body scan was seriously like less than 2 min. He didn't even look @ my stomach, either. I asked my mom and dad, who go to dif dermos, and they said they all do it the same way. Anyways, so doc said I was fine. I asked if I could go to a bed again (and I told him my full history of beds), and he was just like, "well, it will age your skin faster..."....but he didn't say anything about skin cancer...

Thanks for the info . Oh my...the thought of giving myself a shot scares me!

That's good. It's always best to know what is going on with your body, especially making a choice like this. But yes it will age your skin much faster. I knew a girl that tanned obsessively, she is younger than me and looks much older than me. It's touchy with different people. Be safe!

Re: the melanotan. Iv heard that it is the excessive/over production of the melanin in the skin that turns into a cancerous mole/lump/otherwise & therefore that melanotan - even though it is sunfree- it is still the same fast cell division process (that is recognised as cancer) - hence the browning - as sun bathing/tanning - therefore is equal risk regarding cancer. Though saying that you avoid the chance of burning which is said to be bad tanning protocol and aides developing skin cancer?!?

I don't know - there seems to be mixed reviews in google & such

Well what did you expect the doctor to say? You know the risk of tanning, and yet you want to do it anyway.

Beyond that, he can't give you a definite answer. Some people tan constantly, and never get cancer. Some people tan a bit, and do. Tanning is certainly bad for you, but he can't say "if you go tanning during your vacation, you will definitely get cancer".

It just seems like a very silly risk to take to me.
