Dizzy Eliminating Refined Sugar from your diet...

Ok so i know ive posted this on the board about me before, but briefly: I have PCOS which is a hormonal disorder and one of the many side effects of it is my body doesnt quite regulate my blood sugar properly. Last fall i went on a very strict diet and essentially removed anything that had refined sugar from my diet (exception: if iwent out to eat or something). Then i moved to the south and i think the change of pace combined with just being bored of the food i was eating on my diet made it so i strayed from my diet... and no shocker i gained back all the weight i lost (ive never been overweight... but i was super fit before the move). Well for the past month or so ive been trying to go back to a diet similar to the one i was on before.

Also, you may remember i posted a couple times a while back flipping out because i thought i had a UTI because i had to pee all the time. turns out i never had a uti, but i do have kidney damage (a symptom of pcos).

so yesterday and today i broke the diet. i was craving sweet stuff and bananas just wouldnt cut it so i gave in and bought some cereal. and dont kid yourself, even the cereals that look healthy are loaded with sugar... i beleive that sugar is third on the ingredient list for Life cereal. Well today i felt like hell... and i had to pee a lot too... i am uninsured but as the minute clinic dr suggested, the frequent urination is almost definitely due to the the up and down blood sugar that i have.

so my question: before when i went on a strict diet it was a lot easier. i used to crave the greasy stuff. like french fries, hamburgers, all that bad stuff. and i found a lot of foods that could satisfy those cravings that were not processed and unhealthy. But now for some reason i have a sweet tooth. like i crave the processed sugars and stuff. Cereal, cookies, cake... all of hte fat kid stuff that is extra bad since my body obviously CANNOT handle the processed sugar at all. it has to go... the way i felt today made this apparent.

so girls, i need your best recipes for stuff to cure the sweet tooth that wont kill me. and on another note, i cant believe that this is so addicting. i dont have an addictive personality at all typically, but for whatever reason, when i have a sugar craving it is very hard to ignore. idk what the hell is wrong with me lately but yea, sugar needs to be gone from my diet.

ETA: Just foods is fine instead of recipes. i actually am not a splendid cook, so if it is something that doesnt require talent or preparation, all the better.

The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

Unsweetened applesauce with a dash of cinnamon is to die for and it reminiscent of apple pie. Works for me. Also try yogurt- my favourite is peach.

Raw dieting is too intense for me but I DO love some raw desserts, and many of them do not contain refined sugar. Here's a good site:

The south is the hardest area to live if you want to be fit and eat right!

Try keeping fresh fruit around instead of junk food. I think fruit will help satisfy your sweet tooth without breaking your diet. Oh and cutting out soda helps a lot... and sweet tea!! Damn south lol.

Also, Voortman's has sugar free cookies and omega 3 cookies that only have like 5 grams of sugar. They are delicious too.

definitely checkign out that website. i had a friend on a raw diet who was my original inspiration for the first time i cut out sugar from my diet. i never went completely raw ( i have oral allergy syndrom so a lot of fruits/veggies i eat have to be heated up anyway).

yea dude the south sucks for being skinny. i dont drink soda, fortunately my parents didnt raise me on it.

gonna check out the cookies. no sugar is good.

fruits dont quite cut it. idk why but im craving the sweet refined carbs with refined sugar. like if it makes sense the pie crust sounds more appealing than the apple filling.

ugh this is ridiculous. i seriously feel like hell. im wondering wtf ive been putting in my body this winter!

I just started a high in Omega 3..high fiber diet... also cut out caffeine and sugar.... and I eat alot of foods rich in antioxidents...

So far i have alot less hunger... and more energy... not a lot of cravings either and its been almost 2 months...

do a little research about why your body craves sugar..salt...ect... there is a lot of information out there that gets pretty technical, and it will help you when looking at ingredient labels to pick out the healthiest choices....

Also I went to the library and got cookbooks with recipes...if your looking for low sugar deserts, try diabetic cook books... try not to eat too much splenda,,but it works for curing sugar cravings....

theres a lot of fat free snacks out there, but watch out for the sugar... personally i eat a piece of 12 grain toast with omega 3 peanut butter with Jam...it fills me up and gets rid of the sugar craving...

also it's ok to cheat a little as long as you are doing some type of cardio... i just bought a rebounder (one of those little trampolines) and have iplemented that into my routine...

diabetic cookbook is probably a good idea. diabetes runs in my family and often type 2 diabetes develops for people who have pcos... truth be told i would not be surprised if i am pre diabetic considering i have pcos, i have kidney damage, and now it has become clear that when i eat too much sugar it leads to excessive urination. but since i am uninsured hte only solution is to moniter my diet. and when i do properly virtually all of the pcos symptoms go away anyway.

i do plenty of cardio... i do a lot of biking. this week i am doing minimum 30 miles a day, although i took yesterday off because i had a flat and was too lazy to fix it .

    Fuji apples
    Carrot juice
Sweet grapes like muscatels, or muscats.
    Knudsen's 100% juice- cherry
    " " " - blueberry
    Mangos
    Honeydew, sprite, or casaba melons.

... I'm sure I'll think of more later. Also, maybe try carbs & starches since they turn to sugar in your body.

If you have problems regulating your blood sugar, tumeric works great & actually aids in metabolism as well.

My hubby has type I diabetes.... and he doesnt have insurance either... and I'm always telling him to take better care of himself...

Also I'm in school for nursing, and if you're urinating alot after eating sweets you should get checked..its the first indicator that you are diabetic especially if your pee smells sweet... Basically if your body cant produce enough insulin to lower your blood sugar level...it will try excreteing it through urine... definately would recommend going to the doctor ASAP!!

Do you like watermelon? I don't like fruit but watermelon is one of my favorite foods period, I try to use it as my go-to for a sweet, yummy taste.

Stevia is an excellent replacement for sugar, tons of recipes out there for cookies & whatnot out on the web. Xylitol is another. Check em out if you have not already

I recommend the Zero's (like oreos but almost better!) and the flax seed cranberry cookies... sooooo good.

I tried to get down with Stevia but the aftertaste kills me. I was trying the powdered kind, I've heard that the liquid kind is not as bad with the aftertaste?

Xylitol is terrible for you. It's just as bad as sweet& low, nutra sweet, & saccharin.

I eat raw honey. Raw honey as in, it's never been heated or processed. Some honeys labeled as raw aren't actually raw--look for ones that say they're unheated. I see it in normal and specialty grocery stores.

    Example: http://www.reallyrawhoney.com/

This stuff is my crack. I sit there with a fork and eat it. Dunno if that'd fit on your diet, but I don't eat any refined foods, so I think this should fit. Before my diet, I'd never even heard of raw honey...it's totally different than the processed stuff. Soooo good.

The reason it's more expensive is that it's difficult to collect honey off of the honeycombs without heating it (since it's a solid at room temperature). So it takes much longer to prepare it.

Also, if you have a good blender or food processor, make smoothies. It's sooooo easy. Yogurt (unsweetened for you!) + a couple of bananas + frozen berries (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries) = cheap deliciousness.

Also, have you tried agave nectar as a natural sweetener?

As I've been "going raw," I've been surprised by how satisfying oranges are. They're totally underrated! Buying an orange peeler (http://www.amazon.com/Norpro-197-Pla...873646&sr=8-10) makes eating oranges much easier.

Sorry--I hear that you're looking for recipes and not just foods, but I can't help myself from suggesting it.

I actually spill sugar in my pee but I'm not diabetic. When I was trying to go into the military they tested my pee and the sugar levels were phenomenal. I was tested for diabetes by a civilian doctor and tested negative. My mom has the same thing and they thought she had gestational diabetes.

The military also said I have NO depth perception. ::

Did you know you can make cakes and other desserts with fruit pulp? I tried looking for some recipes but they all seem to still have sugar in them. Maybe someone else has one?

[quote=Athenathefabulous;1951925]i figured it was the first symptom of diabetes. but when i am on a low gi diet i am perfectly fine. if i stay on a low gi diet where my blood sugar is constant does it really matter?

It's a very complicated disease... some people are able to regulate it with their diet, other people have to take pills.... my hubby for example has to take shots throughout the day.... do you test your blood sugar regularly? It's not really something to take lightly... as you can fry out your nerves and cause damage to every single cell in your body if it isn't monitored correctly. But def sounds like you're at the onset of diabetes... your best bet is to go to the doctor... or try to educate yourself as much as you can...

I too have done my share of drugs and never have I felt a craving for any of them. But sugar...ugh. I'd get terrible headaches and would become very sick with withdrawal symptoms when I'd try to cold turkey it back in the day. I literally lived off of candy. Yes, literally. And I'd try to stop eating sugar completely but I didn't want anything else, nothing else appetized me in the least. Felt like I needed it. I'd get headaches so bad that they would affect my vision. I used to have terrible blood sugar problems, going to stand up from sitting on the couch and falling back down extremely lightheaded with everything going completely black... Don't tell me that ain't a drug. They're even made the same.
