    Default Open Source Software

Inspired by another thread mentioning the awesomeness and win of OpenOffice, I wanted to start a thread with links to open source software, reviews, and alternatives to mainstream programs. To start:

    http://www.osalt.com/

    http://www.opensourcewindows.org/

    .... to be continued

^ This is SUCH a cool idea! I've already found a Download Manager that saves heaps of time downloading from 'Rapidshare', 'Megaupload' and the like.

Can't find many Operating Systems yet tho'. I know of one - Ubuntu - here:

    www.ubuntu.com

It works on both Windows based PC's and Mac's....although not all Websites or Forums are geared up to recognise it yet.

I've got a whole pile of Open Source software on my PC....trouble is, the list would be like....all the way down this page! I'll have to list them in stages.

I know what you mean! There are so many great programs I use. One of my favorites is Gimp (even though I was trained on Photoshop, but I decided to dabble in Gimp so I could at least be familiar with it). You can perform just about everything you can with Photoshop, it's just that there isn't quite as many tutorials out there. There are some great ones though. I'll have to come back and put some links here for Gimp tutorials too.

Inkscape is also great for vectors.

I use 'IrefanView' and 'Photo!Editor'...I did download 'Gimp', but for some reason didn't use it. Is it any good?

Thumbs up Re: Open Source Software

Excellent idea! I found a couple that will help me - staruml and talend ETL. The Uml will help for a Business Analyst position and a lot of places are asking for ETL now. Free is nice! I'm in Chicago area and I'm a mainframe SME but they always want something additional non mainframe.

Linux Mint is the Windows 7 of Ubuntu's Vista: http://www.linuxmint.com/

Then we also have OpenSolaris, which is just nifty: http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Main/downloads

Then, if you're actually curious about checking each of these OSes out, there's virtualization: http://www.virtualbox.org/
If I had a warning sticker, what would it say?

So - how do these work if you're already running Windows (which you probably are)??

Do you download them....burn a boot disc....uninstall the Windows, and then re-install with the new 'OS'??

Keeping it simple, you're pretty much right on, I just never bother uninstalling windows, as formatting your hard drives for linux/unix usually does a good enough job. Just make sure you backup anything you wanted to keep from your old drives, as reformatting is pretty destructive.

Complex version: You could install virtualbox under windows then setup some virtual machines (VMs) to run each of these OSes as guests under your windows installation. The performance might be somewhat disappointing though.
If I had a warning sticker, what would it say?

Many of the Linux Distributions DVDs have "live" versions, so you can reboot from the DVD and run the OS from there, without having to do a destructive installation... That, and the virtualization paths are probably the best way to try them out.

Here's a few more good little programs that are totally free.

    Internet Browser ('Opera'):

    http://www.opera.com/

Video/Music Downloader & Converter ('FVD Suite'):

    http://www.flashvideodownloader.org/fvd-suite/

(It converts MP3/4, FLAC and .rar too)

    Universal File Extracter ('7Zip'):

    http://www.7-zip.org/

    Anti-Virus AND Firewall ('Avast!5'):

    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

(It beats Norton and AVG easily)

    PC Anti-Malware Scanner ('MalwareBytes'):

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    PC Disc Cleaner ('C-Cleaner'):

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    Personal Files/Desktop Security ('My LockBox'):

    http://www.fspro.net/

    CD/DVD Burner (CD Burner XP):

    http://cdburnerxp.se/

(As good, if not better than Nero...and free)

    I have loads more.

    Here's another little gem.

If you're as sick of 'pop-ups' and banner video ads clogging your Browser as I am - you'll love this. It's called 'Simple Ad Blocker' and it does exactly what it says on the tin.

I installed it last week - and my Browser runs at least 4 times faster now. It also saves on bandwidth usage as you're not downloading ads and videos everytime you go to your Email account or whatever.......

    Simple Ad Blocker (freeware): http://www.bestfreewaredownload.com/...-yirmfvll.html

If you Google Simple Ad Blocker 0.8.6 there's loads of download sources.

Does anyone know if there's a decent alternative to 'Adobe Flash Player'? It's the thing that plays videos on YouTube and stuff.

I've just installed the latest version of it (10.1) - and it's really causing problems in Internet Explorer 8. The same is happening to plenty of other folks - you only have to look at the Computer Forums.......

A good alternative Flash player with Active-X would be welcomed.......
