Default Is the first step hiring a CPA?

I'm trying to figure out how to begin to build a credit history. I've never filed an income tax return, and I recently married someone (a bartender) who filed twice a long time ago. Neither of us has ever had a credit card or a student loan or any other kind of loan. I received ssa disability for 5 or 6 years, and food stamps for most of those years. My husband has gotten both unemployment and food stamps in the past but not recently. I'd like to start paying taxes within a couple of years and basically just get us "on the books" so one of these days we can buy a house and get our teeth fixed and whatnot. Is the first step finding a CPA with experience working for strippers? Is there a book someone can recommend?

while engaging a CPA can be a great advantage, it's not absolutely necessary.

Are you in Tucson? I have a GREAT accountant. They work with over a hundred dancers in this city. I TOTALLY agree that a great accountant will straighten you guys out. Their services are not cheap. But is so worth it. They deal with problems that may come up as well.
I love having everything done professionally.

Britney Ireland was going to try to put together a list of CPAs for Strip & Grow Rich. You may want to see if she has connections to one in your area.

I'd recommend getting a CPA right away so you know what you can write off. After you have one for a year or two you'll get the idea & may be able to do it yourself.

Thanks for the links, Melonie. I was trying to read through old Dollar Den posts after discussing this stuff with my husband and quickly got overwhelmed.

And I guess I should take another look at SGR. I joined when it was half price a few months ago but didn't find it too useful. I'll also ask veteran dancers in my area (New Orleans) if they can recommend anyone.

I know I need to stop procrastinating!
