Search Handfasting: has anyone ever had a ceremony?

Just something that I've been contemplating, NOT anytime soon. I will never get married with a Christian ceremony again. He's got Scottish in him from his father, and I have my Irish blood.
We just figured it would be a nice way to honor our respective Celtic heritages if the time comes.

Has anyone ever had a handfasting ceremony?

I had never heard of this until now so I Googled it. Sounds cool, but definitely not my thing. If I marry the one I hope I do, we will very likely have a Catholic Mass wedding, not this. This seems this is probably less time consuming and perhaps less binding.

That depends on the couple. For many the handfasting is the religious portion of the wedding ceremony, & often combined into a ceremony that is fully legal in the eyes of the government.

My hubby and I combined a handfasting with a more traditional christian wedding. We have also been to a handfasting ceremony. Is there anything in particular you want to know?

Thanks for all the responses. I was most interested in the traditional Celtic ceremony. Sorry I'm drawing a bit of a blank now. For those that had a ceremony, can you post pics? What were your vows like? Was it a legal ceremony or just something private for family and friends?

Handfasting was included in a lot of different traditions, so it sort of depends on which tradition you follow how the ceremony will go.

Typically with legal handfastings your officiant needs to have the legal ability to perform wedding ceremonies. There are LOTS of ways for a person to become legal, so don't feel pressured into thinking you have to go outside your own religious or personal beliefs. In some states though anyone can perform a wedding ceremony - like Colorado. My ex boyfriend had a license to perform legal ceremonies, and because of personal beliefs I've seen many, & I've participated in many.

Do you want vows or the actual wording for a ceremony?

If you want the wording for a full ceremony are you doing this in conjunction with a wedding? If so, do the attendees have the same personal beliefs or will this be something you will try to sneak in?

If you are looking for a more traditional ceremony (non-legal), do you want to have attendants representing the elements with blessings? Will there be a single officiant or two (typically a man & woman)?

Two of my friends did this. I didn't make it to their wedding, just the reception so I don't have much to report on it.

My first marriage was a handfasting ceremony with the legal parts intergrated in to be recognized by the government. My second "wedding", we actually kind of eloped. The officator was the same woman who did my firt handfasting so it still had some of the same traditions, but we used different vows. What a beautiful way to unite!

Yes I had a handfasting ceremony that was legal. It was just me, him and two witnesses. I don't want to post the pics here, but it did involve our hands being tied together by different ribbons, each of a different colour that represented something in our marriage. We got married at sunset in a beautiful nature reserve. A druid priest married us and he wrote a beautiful ceremony which incorporated our pagan beliefs into it. I'll see if I can find it for you and send you it.

I've actually performed a few handfastings ... which were legal because I held the office of 'town clerk' at the time.
