I was on my way to work at my day job downtown this morning and noticed some papers in the middle of the road. Upon closer inspection as I turned a corner I noticed it was a checkbook. (Dunno how it got there, probably fell out of his pocket getting into his car and the wind blew it onto the street) I've had friends that have lost their checkbooks before and know how stressful it can be to take care of a situation like that, so I pulled over and picked it up.
The owner's phone number was on the checks, so I gave it a ring, he answered "This is (name on check)" and I said "Hi there! We've never met, but I found your checkbook in the middle of the road on my way to work!"
Long story short, he thanked me for rescuing his checkbook, told me he was very appreciative of my honesty, and came to my office to pick it up. He asked if I wanted a reward or lunch, and my response was "I only did what I would want someone to do for me, so I can't bring myself to ask for any kind of payment. But if you feel obligated to reward me, then that is entirely up to you."
I got $20 out of the deal. And I'm beaming with "I'm a good person!" warm fuzzy feelings right now.
