    Question Land of Workout confusion!

I've always been a genetically thin girl all my life (100lbs and 5'5) and even after a kid i've never had to work out. But i want to. Call me perfectionist but I don't want to be just skinny, i wanna look toned/healthy. Yet i feel i'm heading no where and i need you lovely ladies to direct me in this sea of fitness confusion.

    1) I avoid cardio like the plague. Why? Cause, to me, its what ppl do to lose weight and i can not afford to lose weight (i would blow away!). But everything is cardio based! Am i wrong to be avoiding it? Is there good cardio for "skinny" girls?

    2) I wanna try Zumba. But as said in 1, i fear cardio and that's what it looks like to me. I love to dance and this is as "sexy" as dancing can get when it comes to adult dance classes (and its the most offered around here). So i'm appealed to it but i'm afraid i'm stepping into a aerobic workout and i don't need that....do i?

    3) My SO says strength training is what i need. I agree. But i have a hard time finding female strength training stuff that doesn't have that scary "look like she-man" feel or require a gym membership. I can't do a gym so everything would be at home. Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

I have tried Pilates (dvd on netflix) and i like it. So i plan on sticking to that but i feel i could do more cause i get bored/unmotivated easy.
Wise ol' SC ladies, lend me your advise! Help me clear this confusion!

cardio is really good for you. even if you are already thin you should be doing it at the very least for your health. you want to get your heart pumping for at least 20 min a day. if you are already skinny just dont do anything too hardcore. and you can always eat more.

strength training is what will tone you though. i dont know wnat zumba is, but if it is like yoga or stripping (mostly anaroebic) it will tone you. gym memberships arent terrible, im actually going to rejoin because i want my muscles back. yoga is good for toning i hear (im not really into it personally) or pilates. maybe something like that? And you can always buy your own free weights and an elastic band...
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

Have you tried pilates? Pilates and yoga may help you get the tone you need. Also, supplementing your diet with protein shakes etc to help build muscle.

I do have a pilates dvd on netflix that i like. Its 10min each section and i really sweat each time. So i'm gonna motivate myself more to do that.
Yoga tends to be to slow for me and i lose interest very quickly.

Zumba is like a salsa dance class meets aerobics. A lot of sexiness with the hip movements but a lot of repetition making it a "fitness" class. I'm afraid that's to much cardio though.

The only gym around here is that Planet Fitness one and i heard its nothing but a meat market and for $10 a month i can't imagine it having much (or ppl of quality if you know what i mean). Plus my daughter makes it hard for me to escape anyway so i do it at home.

My SO is has been working out at home forever now and does that protein shake stuff. I tried it and i like it but it didnt do much for me (damn fast metabolism!) as it did for him. But i might start that up again.

Yeah as far as shakes go I think you have to make them an everyday thing to see results.

There's a sped up version of yoga but I forget what it's called. It's supposed to be an awesome workout.

I'm kinda like you as far as can't gain weight, except I CAN gain it, but only in my midsection! My arms and legs look like toothpicks! And forget the butt, it's practically nonexistant lol. So I have to do a lot of crunches, leg lifts, squats, etc.

    We are the same!
When i take those shakes i get bloated and that's about all i'll see of it. I tried gaining weight (shakes, eating like a pig and working out), made it to 105lbs and when i slipped the next day (didnt eat a lot) i went right back to 100lb. So really my body just refuses to gain weight making getting "toned" seem impossible.

You need to combine strength training (yes, weights - no you won't look like a man) with a protein and carb rich diet.

Get yourself a calisthenics routine off the internet - not trendy anymore as workouts go but it works for what you want, lunges, push up, dips - can all be done using your own body weight or with added wrist and ankle weights.

Then get yourself a set of second hand weights to use at home and do lots of repetitions (8 to 12), three to five sets, and short (30- 90 second) rest periods between sets. Start off with lighter weights and increase slightly over time. It's better to lift weights correctly and slowly, then build up your reps. If you lift too quickly momentum is actually doing all the work, not your muscles. Same applies to the calisthenics.

Whenyou do lift weights you have to lift to fatigue - i.e. until it hurts to do the last one. Muscles builds by tear and repair - if you don't push the muscles it won't tear and rebuild. So if 12 reps at 2kg doesn't leave you struggling for the last one you need to use a heavier weight.

Finally you MUST eat proper food - those shakes tend to bloat. Nothing beats a good diet. Complex carbs and protein are what you need. Egg whites, yoghurt, whole wheat bread, oatmeal. Try to have a carb rich snack or preferably a meal within 30 mins of a workout or if you must drink those shakes do it in this post-workout period. It will help your body repair the muscles tissue.

You should start to see results in 4 - 6 weeks depending on how often you work out. After which you will need to change up your routine so that you don't plateau.
