Default legality of requiring IC's to come to a mandatory staff meeting...

So my club is requiring that we all (dancers, mgmt, wait staff, everyone) come to a mandatory staff meeting. (about 11 am on a sunday)

I am unsure as to whether we are being paid or not, i will be asking tonight.

I know it is illegal to require an employee to attend work without being paid, but since we dancers are independent contractors, is it legal for them to require us to come to this meeting?

A couple of clubs pulled this one and we weren't paid to boot. If we didn't come we were fired, which I found bs. Personally one of the clubs I should have quit because of this because the money I made there wasn't much and the meeting was 3 hours.

i am worried that this will happen. every night while they clear the parking lot, we have to sit in the dressing room and listen to the "dirty whore" speech, (we have nicknamed it), that one of the managers gives us. last night's speech lasted an hour. >.<

i will be asking tonight for a free house fee or lunch or SOMETHING, because i am almost 100% sure it is illegal for them to require me to be there...

I'd be pissed about that. The last thing I want after dancing is a speech. If you can, get the other dancers to walk out. I don't know the legality of requiring it, but many clubs do this. One club had a meeting every Sunday morning, and dancers that couldn't attend (such as church) got fined.

from a legal standpoint as an independent businessperson, you are free NOT to attend. But the club is also free to decide that your 'services' are no longer required.

yep, or at the very least a suspension from working there for a set amount of time. girls? when are you guys going to realise strip clubs are not fair and that you are easily replaced. girls turn 18 every day.
