I am a huge animal lover , as I've noticed so amny of you are, as well. I am looking for something to do to help animals beyond just volunteering at a sherlter. (It just isn't for me). Does anyone else have any creative suggestions?

Sometimes elderly care homes need volunteers to take pets over to visit the senior citizens. It accomplishes two good things at once, and would be good to look into.
If you are good at organizing events look for a small rescue & offer to put together an event to help them raise money.
If you have a camera take photos of the pets & upload them to places like petfinders.com so people can find & adopt them faster.
Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

I'm in the process of opening a closed to the public no breeding animal sanctuary. We're just going to start with farm animals and grazing animals. It's still a long way off but it's a dream of mine. Once we're established and can accommodate larger more dangerous animals we'll be taking in wild cats and reptiles.
If you have even a small amount of room you could foster something small like birds or rabbits. I'm sure since you're an animal lover you're already filled up tho. You'd be surprised how pathetic the restrictions are for fostering animals or starting a sanctuary. They usually just turn into side shows on the highway.

What we've done so far is look into state and local ordinances. Texas is really lame on the laws about setting one up which is why they turn into private zoos. you'll need permanent land and it would be best to be in your sanctuaries name for legal reasons, that way if you ever have financial problems they can;t take your shelter from you; leaving the animals homeless. Financially we are going to probably get a loan to get everything set up then look for private investors. There's nothing wrong with having a public sanctuary to help fund the place, but people take advantage of that and neglect the animals because they are hidden behind the label. It's easy enough to get the animals if you have the set up, illegal exotic animals are confiscated all the time and places get overcrowded when they breed. I just planned on adopting from other shelters when I have the room and funds, and take in animals as they come.
This web site had a lot of info for domestic shelters

This web site was the bomb! Until they redid everything and now every single link doesn't work but this is where I got a lot of info on the legalities and even how to build the cages. If you look on the middle right side you'll see the additional info and you can check all that out. it's one of the few i've found that aren't like "Don't bother, just give us your money!".

Going private to me just makes it better for the animals, so they can just live out their lives but if you go public you can at least be happy that you're not taking advantage of the animals and you have to go public to help them. Plus it's a good learning tool for people that stop in since most the animals in sanctuaries are there because of human stupidity or greed.

Oh and another thing to anyone checking this,
http://www.bigcatrescue.org/
has tons of ways to help animals and they make it very easy. From free stuff that would only take you a few minutes like e-mailing your senator, to hard stuff like volunteering at the sanctuaries. they pretty much cover everything so if you're looking for a little extra to do you should check them out. Plus visiting the site probably gets them some kinda money so that can be a contribution!

^^Awesome!! Thanks![]()
I foster for a rescue. Its great...you get to have new animals in the house all the time, know you are helping save lives, and the financial responsibility is minimal since the rescue picks up all medical costs. I pay for food and day to day stuff like that (toys, treats, etc..) but if I needed help, they'd help with those costs too.
I currently have 7 foster cats (6 of them kittens) and 6 foster dogs(a mom and her 5 nursing puppies). Its a lot of work, but its SO worth it.

If I manage to get enough room for any more additions in my house i'd love to go ahead and do that while we are still setting my own thing up. Too many creatures to love, never enough room...![]()

I live in a loft downtown with my cat and small dog. Do you think the animals already living there would be a hindrance to fostering an animal?

^Nope, you should be fine. Most fosters have their own fur babies, which is usually why they cant adopt them to begin with. Check with the shelter/org you're going to foster for first, but all the fosters I knew always had their own animals also!
As long as your animals arent aggressive or otherwise not good with other animals, you are fine. I have 4 birds and 2 cats of my own! And we all eventually are foster-failures and keep one...and keep on fostering.
Be prepared for a little heartbreak though. Some are hard to give up. Some are sick and dont make it. I lost one of the puppies yesterday. He just wasnt strong enough no matter what we/I did.
