However studies have shown that breastfed babies are healthier than babies that are bottle fed.

I have to admit this is why I chose to breastfeed my daughter.
Ah yes, Colostrum is probably the best thing you can ever do for your newborn child.

And wow, Malaya, that is an amazing article. I plan on breastfeeding anyway, but now doubly so! I'm forwarding this to all of my friends who are expecting or planning on expecting soon!

It's possible to make the father lactate so I'll just stick with that route
I've seen women letting the entire breasts hang out. To me that is gross and makes me uncomfortable.

Actually, many of the studies about breastfeeding they are now finding out have been exaggerated. In particular the IQ one. I know both me and my brother were bottlefed and both of us are very smart. While breastfeeding is a natural choice, just not for every woman. People shouldn't make a woman feel bad because she can't/won't breastfeed. It is a lot of strain on a woman, especially if she had a c section. Like I said, I might consider pumping but the whole feeding from breasts makes me uncomfortable, not to mention that I'd be going back to work soon after, and the dad would be feeding because I don't think it's right for me to do it all. However, it would be different in the event where I was a single mom or a stay at home mom. I doubt either of those situations will be the case.

Breast milk is nutritionally best, that's just the way it is. There isn't a way to tell how someone would have turned out if they had the perfect diet. You're right, people shouldn't make women feel bad for not breastfeeding.

But if a woman does drugs, drinks, etc then it can't be said breast is best in that case because it's not.

Can't speak for those that indulge in such but I don't do drugs and I don't drink and my baby is very healthy. I breastfed her for 4 months and I don't regret it.

I won't lie I ate subway and junk food almost everyday and still managed to have a very healthy child...lol.. PLUS a really hot post baby bod!

Breastfeeding is not bad and I don't see why you find it "gross". I find it cruel when mothers don't breastfeed their child. I think it's very"Selfish".

I will never breastfeed. I don't personally have anything against it, it's just that my body honestly most likely will not be able to provide the required nutrients for a baby to breastfeed. I'd be lucky to get any at all. Although I have to say, I do hate it when people tell mothers against breastfeeding say "But it helps the mother and child create a special bond!" Uhm, not to sound like an ass but clearly I carried the baby that happens to be mine...it just so happens that we have quite a strong bond already.

Just my opinion. I don't have anything against it, but for me, I'm not for it.

Why is it cruel? The baby is still getting a good meal, just not from the breasts. I don't think that's cruel or selfish, just personal choice. It's too much stress on the mother, especially in my case where I'd be going back to work. I find women who nurse openly (I'm talking those who's boob's pop out) disgusting. I'm far from a prude, I just don't like it. Sure breastfeeding is natural but so is using the bathroom but I don't want to see it either. Now I've seen women who were covered up, and that's fine. Maybe in the case where I was alone or not working, but that certainly won't be the case.

Expect people to say you are wrong. I don't care if another woman breastfeeds (though those who pop out a breast in public make me uncomfortable) it's not for everyone. I've heard other women mention the bond, but like you said there will be a bond there anyway. Besides, a baby needs to bond with everyone, not just the mom. In my case I would want my husband to have a strong bond with the baby too (I'd expect him to go to doctor's appointments, the delivery, and everything related to the baby, including the co ed baby shower).

    Agreed!

I was speaking on breastfeeding being healthy for the baby.

I'd never do the whole public breastfeeding thing. It never bothers me when someone I know does it but when someone else does it its a bit puzzling. I would have never thought to breastfeed my daughter in public.. There were days where I'd feed her breast milk from the bottle which is ok. I just don't want to see everyone and anyone's boob.

At least compare it to something similar, like eating solid food.

They can say what they want but it isn't going to sway my ideas on it. It is a very personal choice and I think it's wrong of others to call those mothers that won't cruel or selfish. Because I am sure they are just the same way in other situations that would make them look cruel or selfish.

Judging really isn't my cup of tea. It's too harsh.

Yeah, many women don't know why a woman chooses not to nurse, and it's not always cut and dried. I had a friend who just couldn't nurse (I think there was something wrong with her breasts) yet she got so much grief from the breastfeeding people. I've known other women who tried but it got to be painful. One woman developed infection in her breasts so she quit after a week and she got these women calling her selfish.

most of that stuff doesn't end up in the milk, actually. very, very little actually transfers into the milk. a mother has to pretty much be drunk/high almost constantly for it to be in the milk in really dangerous quantities for the baby.

this isn't to say 'get yo drank on' while breastfeeding, but a glass or two of wine occasionally transfers about the amount of alcohol in a glass of orange juice. even opiate use for pain relief after the birth doesn't transfer much of that drug. certainly the key is that these examples are of occasional or infrequent use, but again, the human body is resilient and it is difficult to render breastmilk nutritionally poor quality.

it is possible to have nutritionally poor breastmilk, but supplementation works in a matter of weeks and those maternal supplements bring the milk's nutrient value to a level higher than cow milk based or soy formula (sadly, the only two options americans really have, though there are better ways to go with formula that are just about as good as breastmilk.)

the supplements that would ensure quality breastmilk are far cheaper than formula and produce higher nutrient value food for the baby. the act of breastfeeding creates chemical interactions and transformations with the milk that cannot be duplicated by pumping or formula.

tangentially, men can breastfeed if they desire to. they have milk glands and can produce colostrum at a minimum. the more you learn!

so, breastfeeding until 8...maybe not that natural, those kids seem to have an unhealthy relationship with their mother's breasts...I mean they are drawing pictures and naming them...however, I breastfed my oldest son until he was 22 months old and I know it was the right thing for us. As for those of you who think it's disgusting to breastfeed in public WAKE UP!!! The breast is FOR providing nourishment. It is sexual because a male instinctively wants to reproduce and mammary glands provide his offspring a better chance of survival. A child nursing is no more "gross" as you so maturely stated, than eating a hamburger..which is actually pretty damned unnatural if ya ask me! If you don't like it put a blanket on your head! A mother providing nourishment and comfort to her child is a beautiful thing.

Yes but here is where my allergies come in. I can barely take any supplements as is. I'm allergic to them. Also...I personally drink baby formula. Still, to this day. So I see nothing wrong with it. It is just how my body is and I have to do my best with the body I was given. As will my children.

I'm fine with breastfeeding. I didn't do it. My daughter is healthy and maybe even healthier than the kids I know who were breastfed. However, DON'T EVER WHIP YOUR FUCKING TITS OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF A RESTAURANT. It's unappetizing. Yes it may be natural but so is taking a shit. You don't see people taking shits in the middle of a restaurant. The last thing I want to see or hear is the suckling of a boob. Thank you.

My son was 9 weeks premature so I never had the chance to put him to breast. He was 5 weeks old before he was "medically able" to "try" but wasn't interested because he was used to a feeding tube and supplemental bottle feedings. I pumped from the first day he was born and kept doing it, he never had any formula in the NICU. I had plenty of time while he was in the hospital (6 1/2 weeks) because I was recovering from my c-section and there was a pump room at the hospital. I bought a breastpump the day I left the hospital. I wanted SO bad to breastfeed because of the emotional connection and because I had planned it my whole pregnancy, but he physically would not breastfeed, although he was "exclusively breastfed"--meaning exclusively fed from my breastmilk. Well, I had an overly abundant milk supply and had lots and lots of milk stored in my fridge and freezer and the NICU. I became depressed about two weeks before he came home from complications in his medical status and stopped pumping as much, and my supply waned. Shortly after he came home and he wouldn't nurse. I tried to keep up pumping but I fell behind and soon I was only making enough for one bottle a day. I stopped completely about 6 weeks ago.

I still have a couple bags in the freezer that I feed him as a "treat", but for now he is pretty much exclusively formula fed. I think so much pressure is on women to breastfeed when it should be a personal decision.

I hope my next baby is not premature so I can actually put them to breast, most people don't know how hard it is to keep your milk supply up with JUST a breast pump for a long period of time--and most people never have to "go there" unless their child is in the NICU.

Read my previous post. I had an emergency c-section and I promise you both are just as "difficult", but what is harder is when you want to breastfeed but your baby will not physically nurse. Good luck to you if you are going to keep up with a newborn's feeding schedule AND breast pump for 30 minutes every three hours (what I had to do while he was in the NICU--day AND night). A baby will naturally suck more and stimulate the breasts to make more milk, but a machine doesn't do that so you have to guess how much they need and pump longer to make more milk.

I used a shawl in public when I absolutely HAD to breastfeed in public, but most women who breastfeed also pump because they make excess milk. If you want to exclusively breastfeed you need to pump so Dad can feed the baby and babysitters can feed them too! 9 times out of 10 I would just bring a bottle or two in the cooler and heat it under some warm water OR just make a bottle beforehand and warm it for him. Breastmilk stays good longer at room temperature versus formula because it has natural good bacteria.

Guess what you do at resturaunts? You eat. Babies eat. It's not comparable to taking a dump in the middle of the place. We naturally want to stay away from shit, not the sight of a boob. The people I know don't even show their boobs at all when they breastfeed in public...

Personally I'd make sure to spray titty milk at the table next to me because I don't like to see or hear them chewing.

That does sound harder. I haven't investigated the whole pumping thing but would likely just formula feed instead. I know that once I went back to work I wouldn't be able to pump anyway.

You don't see people taking shits in the middle of a restaurant. The last thing I want to see or hear is the suckling of a boob. Thank you.
Things like that are why it bothers me. I was once in a store and this woman whipped out her breasts and you could see them. I saw another woman nursing but she had a cover over her breasts so that didn't bother me, but the other woman did.
