Hi! I have been dancing for almost 4 years, I am 23 years old and I want to get out of the business. My boyfriend hates my job and I am over the scene too.

But what else can I do or what kind of business can I start that has the same perks as dancing (besides getting paid to be sexy haha)
such as : being your own boss and making great money.

I want to work alone because i cannot work with people. welll , i can, but i prefer not to.

I'm starting to save up money but I just dont know what to do?
I am going to college and get my Associates in April 2011 - but??

    Thank you so much!

Since you posted this in Dollar Den I assume that the emphasis of your question is financial.

To be blunt, I can only think of a handful of alternatives available to a girl who does not have a college degree that can provide earnings potential and flexibility that is similar to exotic dancing. Those would be escorting, prostitution, porn actress, XXX webcam, and 'girl toy'. Obviously, the 'sex business' provides a level of earnings potential and flexibility that is pretty well unmatched by any 'straight' business or entry level job.

An obvious question is, of course, what you are majoring in for your Associates degree ?

Another unfortunate fact is that in today's economy and with today's newly enacted / pending law changes regarding business taxes, new 'mandated costs' to businesses, new loan criteria for businesses etc. it has never been riskier to start a new small business venture. These days, any really successful new business will probably need substantial self-financing for startup, and will also need to serve a 'niche market' for customers who actually have enough money to pay their bills ! Obviously there are a ton of opportunities to form a new 'service' oriented business, but there are also significant up front expenses involved to launch such a new business i.e. legal, insurance, 'tools and equipment' etc. And as mentioned earlier, it is extremely difficult to offer such 'services' on a cash up front basis when competing existing businesses will offer 'terms' ... meaning that the new business will be at risk of making the investment and performing the 'service' and then standing in line along with 100 other creditors trying to actually get paid PART of the money you are owed !

But in many cases the situation re entry level 'straight job' employment opportunities isn't very good either. New graduates are now increasingly finding themselves competing with unemployed earlier graduates who also have some measure of real world work experience to offer prospective employers.

Get a degree in business or law. Find a job in that field for a few years, and when you have a good base of knowledge and experience, you can strike out on your own and potentially make excellent money. Prepare to work like a demon, though. The degree will require your all and work will require that plus reserves you didn't know you had.

I left the business at about 23 myself. Actually, I just stopped dancing. I can't say I officially left the business because a lot of my business was still IN the business (client wise). I became a freelance makeup artist for M.A.C (shit pay) and then started my own very small business in the makeup artistry world. It went GREAT at first. Then as the economy went more to shit, weddings were less frequent and many of my regular clients ended up moving out of the Bay Area. In a cross roads now... thinking of going back to school and getting a degree in mortuary science so I can do makeup for funerals. I'll always have a bounty of clients then, anywhere I decide to move to.

^^^ Jessica, your personal experience post actually emphasizes a couple of issues that any new business needs to consider. First, you were attempting to appeal to a 'shrinking market' ... in your specific case a market consisting of middle class Californians whose job security is declining, whose taxes are rising, some of whom have decided to leave your market area in search of 'greener pastures'.

Second, the service you were offering was a 'luxury' ... ultimately something which your clients could do for themselves ( admittedly with greatly inferior results no doubt ). When discretionary dollars are declining ( as the result of rising taxes, rising costs of 'necessities' etc. ) the first area of spending cutbacks will be the 'luxuries'.

I'll agree on the lawyer portion. The more new regulations the gov't enacts, the more taxes increase, etc. the more likely it becomes that the services of an attorney will be required. However, the question remains as to whether or not giving up ~6 years worth of other earnings opportunities plus investing $100k+ in tuition in order to obtain a JD is a 'good investment' or not.

As to the business portion, this really boils down to whether or not you and your college are 'connected' enough to land you an 'upper echelon' position after you obtain an MBA.

Absolutely. The experience and portfolio I gained while in business is very beneficial for my next career venture, which will be doing makeup for funerals. I have to go to school for a degree in mortuary science, first. Just about any career in the funeral business is recession proof, as long as you can get your foot in the door in the first place.

I actually opened up my own modeling studio after a short stint in the fashion industry. Started out working for myself, and slowly have expanded to hire other women as well. It's a simple business plan, but it is sustainable, and allows me enough free time to do the stuff I really enjoy. While I do miss working in the club, I know I couldn't do it forever.

I also do some consulting work on the side, especially for web-based businesses. Funny how things turn out...

I am an accountant. Currently, my job title is CFO (Chief Financial Officer) which sounds grander than it is. My current employer is still VC funded, so we're not large by any means. I like start ups though. I like getting companies started, setting up their financial controls and then moving on to the next start up.

If you're interested in being your own boss, maybe you could look at a franchise. Just make sure you do lots of research before you decide to buy one.

Is there any money in marketing your services to SF's tranny/drag population?

I just got hired to be a Quality Assurance Specialist. Yup, with an English degree. The company I will be working for doesn't even look at peoples' resumes (literally) unless they have a degree and over a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

For $42,000 a year plus amazing benefits, I will gladly give up the 'freedom' that dancing gave me. After dealing with shit for four years in that industry, I can put up with a few downsides in the mainstream world. Though I don't really see being on a regular schedule as a downside, personally. Hello, paid sick leave / paid vacation + 100% insurance + 401 K matching, etc! Yeahhh...I'm not missing stripping.

i absolutely CANNOT wait to start a proper job thats not dancing, waitressing or bartending.

a job in fashion no matter how small the role and how little it pays so i can feel as though i got my foot in the door of the adult world and wont be lost in a club forever.

No minor. But, I was working while going to college, so I didn't take any classes beyond what I needed for my degree. I wish I had taken more language and art classes though. But, life is a compromise.

As far as accounting for job, yes I enjoy it. The work is steady. Sometimes it is demanding in terms of hours, sometimes it's not. So far I have spent my entire career in industry, so I don't know what the grind is like at a CPA firm. I never wanted to be in that end of the business. I like start-ups. So, that's where I stay. I like the challenges of molding a company. I don't see that with established businesses, but that's just me. A lot of people don't like the idea of switching jobs every few years. They like to see a steady career progression. Me, I get bored after a while and have to start over. Try to do better the next time around.
