Question Acne, my body's way of saying HELP?

Hi there everyone This post is a little long, but I'm a little desperate. So here we go.

I have been browsing the site for threads about aggravated skin lately. I've been battling some hormonal acne for years and, naturally, I hate it. Earlier this year I was prescribed birth control for the first time and my skin completely blew up. I began to develop painful cysts on my jawline and near my mouth, not just small scattered pimples. The cysts are large and deep, and the only thing that helps keep the inflammation and redness down is exfoliation, using Alba's facial mask everyday, and taking a lot of ibuprofen when it gets really bad. I stopped using the birth control due to the side effects after three months, but my skin didn't change. That was 8 months ago and the cysts feel like they'll never leave.

Even though I still look great with makeup (Thank you, HD Foundation! For giving me a lovely mask to wear when I leave my home), I need to fix my body. There is something terribly wrong happening on the inside. Above anything, I just want to be healthy. I want to look, feel, BE healthy. I'm a vegetarian and an outdoor sports enthusiast, and I try to keep a steady diet, meditate, exercise, and seek peace. But my skin isn't following I'm not comfortable taking drugs to cover up my acne, I want to get to the real root of the problem. Most dermatologists are useless pieces of shit who only want to prescribe me benzoil peroxide creams or accutane or yaz. No, thank you. I'm currently reading a book on Ayurveda for women which seems to be the right direction, even though its difficult to wrap my brain around all of it's intricacies.

So my question is: do you ladies have any helpful ideas on natural ways to help the skin find peace?
Anything that has helped you, or a friend? Or just words of encouragement, please

Maybe your allergic to something, I noticed whenever i eat apples my face blows up, I have to read ingredient lists now so I dont keep breaking out. I found 'apple puree' in my raspberry jelly I used for sandwiches, it can be sneaky!. Bio Oil has helped reduce the scarring on my face and make it smoother. I also read today on these forums that an acid facial peel helps alot. I cant find the specific post but someone was talking about a friend of their with really bad acne and scarring and it helped them be as smooth as a baby bum.

Do you have a dermatologist? Find a good one and work with them to get clear skin. I have battled acne too.

i have had this EXACT same problem. my face started breaking out when i was about 14. i tried everything like neutrogena and proactiv and all of those products are a total waste of $$$. my ob/gyn slapped me on birth control (orthotricyclin) and it made an even bigger mess of my face (this is when the cysts started; they were these really hard bumps that hurt when i would touch them but wouldn't pop like a zit would. i thought i would have them forever.)

i stopped using peroxide, rubbing alcohol and salicylic acid and harsh exfoliants like st. ives because all these things did was tear my skin up and make it all dry and then i would break out even more.

i switched back to pretty much the ol' soap and water routine in combination with a womens daily multivitamin and a light facial moisturizer and now my skin looks like porcelain. this is NOT by any means a quick fix or over night thing. it took me about 6-8 months to get my face to completely clear up and this was after 6 years of severe acne.

F.Y.I. i have done lots of research on this and eating certain foods does NOT actually make you break out per se; people break out from the food particles getting on their faces physically (i.e. powdered cheese from dorritos stuck to corners of mouth, just like eye make up tends to travel sometimes and not stay put this shit travels too! or my favorite is when people touch their faces after having a slice of pizza or a greasy ass burrito...) it takes approximately 2 weeks for a pimple to actually develop and surface. my point here is you can still indulge in all your yummy fave junk/snack foods provided that you are still getting all of your vitamins and nutrients. Just keep your hands off of your face at all times, oh and mineral make up only but i think you said you're already using good make up. in regards to that i don't use any make up that contains talc. talc=nasty filler

    thanks everyone

but question, kitten... don't you ever feel like you need to exfoliate?! if i don't use a scrub similar to st. ives, i feel icky, like i need to get rid of the top layer of skin because it's damaged. i've tried the soap and water method (aveeno gentle foaming face wash, and the calming moisturizer) for months and there was just so much build up..

I don't buy that diet doesn't affect acne. It does depend on the person. Some people can eat whatever they want and not get acne. Others have to do trial and error to figure out what aggravates their skin. Maybe for some people nothing helps.

I found out I have pcos and hormone imbalance. I cut out unnatural sugar and keep my blood sugar regulated in order to have decent skin. I learned from reading about diabetes diets. I know a few people that only eat raw foods now and don't get acne anymore. Some have to eat raw foods in certain combinations.

    Acne is so annoy!

The only time I ever had crystal clear, glowing skin was when I stopped eating dairy and gluten for a full month. Even accutane was only a temporary solution. Since I love dairy more than perfect skin, I still get zits... but that is my choice.
I also went to an allergist, and it was confirmed that I have food sensitivities, highest on the list being dairy and gluten. So this may or may not be the problem for you... something to look into though

If you're looking for a more extreme solution, try becoming a raw foodist. After time, exposure to living foods is said to clear up hormonal acne and whatnot. I personally am on Trinessa (bc) + spironolactone and have great skin currently, so I can't attest to whether or not some part of my clear skin is from being a raw foodist. But I've heard that many have experienced alleviation of acne after a month or so of eating living (raw) foods.

I had to try a bunch of acne medication to get my skin to a good place. Now as long as I use my medications from my derma like I should my skin is perfect. My derma prescribes me with rosanil wash and benzaclin in the evening and differin in the morning. It works out great. Good luck finding something that works for you.
