About a year ago, a good friend of mine fell off the face of the planet. I finally ran into someone who knew where she is and it turns out she is in jail. I want to be there for her, but I don't know how.
I started by writing a letter and put that in the mail today with a few self-addressed stamped envelopes, in case she wants to write back. I asked in the letter how I can help, what she needs, etc. But I am afraid she will be too proud to write back at all or to tell me how to help her. I think she was too humiliated to tell anyone what was happening, and I wouldn't be surprised if she remains out of touch.
But I love her and I really want to be there for her. I just need some ideas of HOW to be there for her. If you or a loved one has been in jail, please tell me what to do! What can I send? Cigarettes seem like such a cliche and I don't even know if its true (though I do know she was a smoker before her incarceration.) What else can people in jail have and what do they want? I would love to send her a huge care package but I wouldn't know the first thing she would need or want or be allowed to have. I really appreciate anyone who takes time to write back with some ideas. Thanks!
