Default History of Friday the 13th

(snip)"Friday the 13th is like most bad dates; they all have something negative to do with politicians – usually war, street battles or theft. For example, as Americans we all know the evil meaning of April 15th each year or the December 7th attack by Japan. Before the invention of the income tax, politicians and governments stole most of their wealth from groups rather than from their entire population. Small wars and plain old outright confiscation of property on trumped-up crimes and charges were the norm.

Friday 13th gained its association with trouble from such a government enterprise in the year 1307. As today, there was an empire swamped by debt and with a desperate political leadership looking for wealth to steal. The hero in charge was King Phillip the 4th of France, who had earlier stolen most of the wealth of his Jewish subjects. After running through that money, he decided to go after the very wealthy Knights Templar, who had accumulated much wealth and, in their folly (remember this, China), had lent Phillip and the French government far more than they could ever repay.

Phillip developed a secret plan to imprison the entire order in France on Friday 13th, using trumped up charges, then steal their assets and destroy his largest creditor in the same stroke. It worked, at least to the extent that plundering can ever work. He escaped his debts to the Templars and got all of their vast real estate holdings in France – but not their portable property. They were able to secretly move their treasure out of the country, and even today people still search for the lost Templar gold.

So what does the unlucky Friday 13th and King Phillip have to do with your wealth and our modern-day and political system? Quite a bit, actually, as there are several theories about where the lost Templar wealth was hidden and how it was used. The most plausible drop-off location is Scotland. Many historians believe Scotland's King Robert the Bruce won the Battle of Bannockburn, in the first War of Scottish Independence, largely with mounted Knights Templar.

There also is scholarly speculation that some Templars escaped to Switzerland and that remnants fought in the 1315 Battle of Morgarten with the Swiss peasants from the newly independent Swiss forest cantons. Switzerland does have a long history in the wealth protection business.

So part of the Templar gold may well be sitting in a bank vault under the Zurich Bahnhofstrasse, but suffice it to say on this Friday 13th, remember that your wealth is an easy target inside your home country whenever desperate politicians decide they need what is yours."(snip)

Wow, what a trip! On another note, my little black kitten has been SUPER hyper today. Guess she knows it's her day!

    Melonie --

This just reinforces something I have been thinking about. In these unsettled times, when the $$$ in the clubs is not what it was, maybe I should bump up what I give to dancers, even though from a "portfolio mgmt" viewpoint I can't afford it per se.

I don't give much to charity because I don't know if it's doing much good (e.g. we can pump any amount of $ into Haiti but until they can practice birth control, that country will never get on its feet. But I don't think the Pope is reading my posts on SW). I almost never give to those guys on the corner with the "anything helps" signs, because I don't think it does help. It helps them stay alive to sleep on the street, until winter when they'll freeze, if they haven't worked out somewhere to go; which they won't as long as they get enough donations to keep on.

Strippers are different, though. At least while they're in their prime and have plans they're working toward, donations do help. If it goes to someone who uses that freedom to construct the next stage of her life, maybe that's a better place to give than United Way, even if not tax deductible. Plus, the strippers are earning it!

How this relates to your OP: If the world economy recovers its health, my investments will take care of me and I can have a little fun. If we spiral down into a wealth-confiscation scenario - whether overt as in the old days you mention, or by currency devaluation, or by inflation (which I think is almost certain because it takes no political will), then why be tight with 2010 dollars now, thinking they'll take care of me in 2030? Why not give some to girls who can use them now, and make friends with them ? They'll spend them the next day, and if more ppl like me did the same, the velocity of money/ consumer sentiment might pick up (and I'll have fun at 2010 prices that may not last, in terms of the $ as we know it now) .

Well, enough for now. I hope my plan can work longer term. I know that any plan to funnel $$ to strippers always works (at least for me) in the short term.

Well the girls will certainly thank you !!! Also, you can rest assured that the lion's share of your 'contributions' are actually being transferred to those girls ... as opposed to some gov't / non-profit bureaucrat paying themselves a six figure salary out of your contribution money ( well this scenario could apply at clubs like DejaVu I suppose ... but not if you tip the girls directly ). And most of all, you are likely to personally and immediately enjoy the 'results' of your 'contribution' !!!

As to your longer term comments, they would appear to stem from the US late 1970's inflationary mindset of 'spend it fast before prices go up even more !' Long term wealth preservation may indeed be a huge problem if you are 'trapped' in the US and your money is 'trapped' in US dollars. This is obviously a major reason why I'm now living way south of the border !
